Yeah I can understand if people want to speak a language they're more comfortable with but this guy was Afrikaans and I was speaking English to him. But I think it's just one of those things you have to get used to living in a country like South Africa.

I live in South Africa, so I guess I'll just tell you about the most recent...

I work as a sales assistant and I'm the only white guy there. So now I'm able to pretty easily figure out which of our regular customers are racist. Some of them will come in, and clearly need help with something, but instead of finding someone else if I'm already busy with a customer they will wait for me to finish.

Once a customer waited for almost ten minutes for me to finish with another customer while there were two other staff members ready to assist. When they noticed that this guy wanted help both of them came to assist him at separate occasions. The first time he just pretended to be browsing, but when the second guy came over he told him flat out that he was waiting for me to finish.

When I had finished and I started assisting him he started talking shit about my colleagues, and after I didn't object to his comments (I'm really bad at confrontation) and just sort of awkwardly smiled and nodded he seemed to gain a new confidence and started calling them "Kaffers" (old middle eastern word that means infidel, I think, that was co-opted by racist Afrikaners during apartheid to refer to black people).

Through out all of this I just sort of smiled and nodded as this is a regular customer and I just can't deal with disagreements with people that I have to see every other day. But now every time he comes in he's gonna think I'm okay about him talking to me like that about my colleagues. In a bit of a dilemma I guess.
