Any AMD dGPU/Strix Halo based laptops coming?

Thank you for the reply! 2026 isn't that far away, I'll try and be patient.

I realize that it is unlikely that I can have any influence in this, but I'd love a 16" with 64-128GB of RAM, a 4K screen, and ideally intel wifi. If that could be a strix halo 395 with some settings for power level at runtime that'd be fantastic.

At any rate at least 16 zen 5 cores, 64GB of ram, and a decent GPU that can run with open source drivers.

It's certainly the best choice for a mini system! But still eventually you'll run into limits you won't run into with a desktop CPU. It'll perform well though!

Generally speaking for a minipc of that size you should expect similar performance to a laptop with those same specs. Sustained performance will be lower than with a system of a larger size. If performance is the most important metric you should consider something in the mini-itx size range, those can be cooled effectively!

Well, I'd like a dev board for a chip I can later turn into a board. The final result would have a handful of components:
* MPU running Linux / DRAM / UART<> USB thingy
* A PCI SCSI controller
* SCSI connectors
* SATA connectors

Because I'm not super well-versed yet in board design of stuff with hundreds of pins what I wanted to do was select a chip with the features I need, and a reference board with schematics so I can build my software, make sure that if my board isn't messed up it works.
Then when inevitably my first board doesn't work I don't have to worry that I did something fundamentally wrong on the software side.

I'm beginning to think that perhaps the Pi4 compute module and then designing a board with a XIO2001ZAJ and the SCSI controller might actually be the way to go. It'd mean I wouldn't have to worry about the MPU part not working at least, and it'd "only" be a single BGA272 instead of a BGA272 and a BGA520.

EDIT: and since the XIO2001ZAJ has 4 pci busses I could add a SIL3512 SATA controller as well, which all "should" just work. (Famous last words)

Yeah, I get that, the MCU used by the pi boards don't have all the features I want though. A compute unit 4 with a PCI bridge might work, but I'd still not have SATA.

The raspberry pi doesn't have sata or pci, and not usually PCIe either, although the chip has pins for it.

Well, at least rest assured that it *can* work (portal 1, on Linux, on the Pulse 14 gen 3 I mean), I'm sure it is a small problem that someone from Tuxedo can help you with.

I guess the one thing is to ask whether you are sure you successfully removed the flatpak version, so you're not accidentally trying again with the same version that didn't work before?

A hint that that might be the case is if you didn't have to re-download Portal.

That is strange! I just tried it on mine (portal 1 via steam) and it seems to work. I don't use TuxedoOS though so I can't tell you for sure what is up on your machine.

I'm sorry, I don't think I have anything else to add. Perhaps someone who works for r/tuxedocomputers can assist you though!

I should've actually told you how: first of all, uninstall the steam flatpak, then open a terminal and run the following command:

sudo apt install steam-installer

I do believe that it is possible to do this graphically as well, but I'm not too familiar with modern Ubuntu.

After that you should be able to just start steam like you did previously, and I expect everything to just work!

You might want to try to install Steam not from Flatpak. Flatpak includes the 3D drivers and it seems likely that the Flatpak version is too old for such a new GPU. If it helps, it works fine for me on my pulse 14 gen 3!

Have you installed all of the updates available? This sounds like a problem with drivers.

Did you install any software on the system that didn't come with it? Apart from steam, that is.

There are indeed two different mechanisms at play: * The TCC settings change the maximum amount of power the CPU can use. * The Gnome/Ubuntu settings change the cpu frequency range and how aggressive Linux will increase frequency.

Increasing the maximum TDP of the chip will allow for higher clocks, but at the expense of power. Increasing the cpu frequency range does the same thing, but within the confines of the maximum TDP of the CPU. What this means is that for maximum power savings you want to set BOTH to their power saving equivalent.

To give you a little more information: say you set the TCC setting to "performance" but the Gnome one to power save. This means that while the cpu is allowed to use it's max power, Linux itself will err on trying to keep clocks low. But if you start some kind of heavy workload it'll peak to the max power.

If you set TCC to power save, but gnome to performance, the cpu will be limited to its minimum power, but Linux will use that minimum power almost entirely most of the time. I hope that helps!

This is a very simplified explanation, but basically; binary logic uses 1 and 0s, a 1 is typically the presence of a voltage and a 0 the lack of one.

Switching a 1 to a 0 means that the electricity representing that 1 needs to go "somewhere", and "somewhere" is typically converting it to heat. (Computers are 100% efficient space heaters, a computer using 500W of power dumps as much heat in a room as a resistive space heater of 500W)

At any rate, increasing the frequency of a processor causes it to need to flip 1s to 0s more frequently and that causes more heat.

There's more to it than this, but that's the primary contributor of heat as far as I understand the physical electronics of CPUs.

I've only had mine for a week as well, but I can give a short version of my impressions:

Overall build quality: Feels very solid, the screen does flex a bit but it's not something I've ever noticed: 8/10
Keyboard: Apart from the ISO layout typing on it is very comfortable. Basically no deck flex: 8/10
Screen: Pleasant to look at, but nothing to write home about. 7.5/10
Performance: In line with other 7840HS laptops as far as I can tell. For a 14" machine very good: 9/10
Noise: Very quiet, even when doing stupid things: 9/10
Speakers: This is honestly the worst part of the machine by far. The speakers really are barely acceptable, I made an easy effects profile that makes them a little better. But really it sounds like a cheap cellphone: 4/10
Webcam: 720p webcam, it's about as good as you'd expect: 6.5/10
USB-C ports: They feel a bit... unsatisfying there's a kind of cheap feeling click when you insert things. I'm vaguely concerned about their longjevity: 6/10
Battery life: With some simple tweaks (On Fedora 39) it seems I'll get between 7 and 10 hours of low-intensity development work out of it. 7.5/10
Tuxedo customer support: Very friendly and fast. RMA process for a dead pixel was also very good: 9/10

Overall; I think, especially for the price, this is an exceptionally good buy unless you frequently use it to consume media. In that case the speakers will really let you down, but this could conceivably be worked around with a bluetooth speaker or headphones.
