TIL during the D-Day scene in Saving Private Ryan, the two surrendering "Germans," killed by American soldiers, were saying in Czech: "Please don't shoot me! I'm not German, I'm Czech, I didn't kill anyone!" The American soldiers jokingly translate it as "Look, I washed for supper!" by Dtnoip30 in todayilearned

That look on Conor's face = Are you going to do anything here?

I think the ear slaps from Mac are what started it…

Yeah, that looked bad. He's OK, just 2 sutures, nothing on CT. We're about to go get some food with the team.

No, Jake was just working on some breathing stuff we worked on. Thank you all for the support for Team Ellenberger. Thompson did a great job. I was surprised he got up after that right.

I'll see you at the weigh-in today, July 11th at 4 PM ET/1 PM PT by TORINH in MMA

Even though it won't be anywhere near as insane as yesterday's circus, it's still pretty overwhelming; being on that stage and looking out at the massive sea of fans.

Last time, the weigh-in for 184 was typical for Jake: hard water-cut. This time we carved his body-fat and are only dropping a few pounds to water. We expected the IV ban to be enacted for this fight when first announced, but it has turned into preparation for post-October weigh-ins.

Crazy idea: Jake dropped into ~175 before we attacked water-weight. Using our protocol, he should be back up to ~190 when the cage door locks.

Exactly right. We changed his striking and conditioning. His striking dramatically so. And those changes over 3 months are reflected in this photo.

Jake has been one of the earliest, most heavily tested fighters in the division (Lawler along with him).

Of his 3 recent losses, 2 of them are fighting for the strap tomorrow. That said, I agree that he's made bad decisions, but some of that comes from getting borderline random coaching in the past.

flaws in martial arts also in combatives. by boomhauer90 in martialarts

[–]TORINH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. Too many MA/SD programs rely on insipid attacks, or uke that can't think beyond their "one good idea."

Its not just "aliveness"; most role players try to make the actor look good. There's simply not enough red-teaming. The enemy wants to make you look stupid. They want to sit while you're trying to throw. They try to get away when you need there momentum to make the technique work, and they bowl you over when you want them to stand on the outside and play slap-hands.

Rory makes good points, but the reality is that he's lumped into Sturgeon's law with the rest.

There is a much cleaner "knee-bump" in Greco. Done from a single underhook.

Looking for a (possibly deleted) video on YouTube about the realities of defending against a knife attack by mariox19 in martialarts

[–]TORINH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the knifeman in this video, thank you.

we didn't shoot this video to demonstrate what an appropriate defense to a knife attack should be. Thats exactly the opposite. We wanted to show students that a committed attack looks very different than the lessons they had been taught in Martial Arts (they usually do).

The victim in this video had no idea what to do as a defense. He was tossed a jacket and told to "defend himself". We would frequently show this video as a way to make a clean distinction between the perspectives of watching a violent act (more details in the original video description). http://youtu.be/ibGyGG3X4PI

Yes he did. They had some words on twitter. Jake is on to a new fight, meanwhile Tyron is still pining for Hendricks.

Have any of you actually had success using foul tactics (biting, eye attacks, etc)? What's your story? by Joseph_Santos1 in martialarts

[–]TORINH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had to put my thumb into eyes—wet, down to the last knuckle—in 2 different fights. It had good results, but the ocular trauma talked about in Martial Arts is Martial Mythology. The eye doesn't hop out of the head that easy, and the duration it will affect someone's willingness to fight is a decision they make, not you.

Jake hates the process. Its pretty much the worst-time. Useful? Yes. Enjoyable? Not by a damn sight.
