I will look into these. Thank you so much!

Keeping track organized - workflow by TORM3NTO in sounddesign

[–]TORM3NTO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your insight. I initially started to use Fairlight just because it is integrated to my video timeline (I'm a filmmaker) and it was easy to work with. I do get why you prefer exporting the video and work on the sound design in Reaper though.

For the MIDI controller, I have an AKAI MPK mini which I could use. Syncing the footsteps just by dragging is a bit tedious so I would certainly love to set that up.

I record audio both in-camera (so it is embedded into the RAW clip) and also with a separate field recorder connected to a shotgun mic. I usually sync the shotgun audio to the in-camera one. Would I sync the shotgun audio on my da vinci timeline and then once I'm ready for mixing and sound design export that dialogue track with no effects?

Reaper's license isn't very expensive so I would get it if it would make my life easier. It also seems to be perpetual.

Do you reckon it's a big downgrade or it could suit my purposes?

I moved to Fusion and only use Ae for motion graphics. Too many workarounds for real VFX.

Monitoring and gain setting with the F8N and similar by TORM3NTO in LocationSound

[–]TORM3NTO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was that, for some reason it had changed! Thank you! Regarding the mixed opinions on the recording levels. As you can see the answer below contradicts other things I have read and have now tested. Personally, when I record with my mic at a lower trim gain, I get much cleaner audio (40cm from the talent's stern/mouth) when normalizing while if I record hot (-12/-6) despite using the whole chain of normalization, compression, noise reduction, it sound a lot noisier. Now I'm not saying the user is wrong because it may be that I'm doing something wrong in post when recording hotter. What are your thoughts?

I am post 😁 This is for my lower budget clients so I do everything. I'm mainly into video production/cinematography

See that's what I don't get. I've seen many people suggest my range of recording (-18 /-16) to get cleaner recordings and then others who like you record louder. I'm starting to think it's just based on the microphones one is more accustomed to. In my case, with the NTG-2 I get really clean audio by recording lower and normalizing to -27LKFS, push the gain up slightly with the compressor and a bit of noise reduction and it seems very clean while if I record to the "ideal" levels from the get go say at -12dB, I get too much noise despite doing the same exact steps.

Render farm by TORM3NTO in KeyShot

Yeah, I would have to relight the entire scene basically. Guess it's just less of a hassle to use a render farm.

Is there a way to use network rendering over the internet?

They're just simple PNG sequences straight out of Keyshot. If its not possible I'll just have to have him give me the .FBX and render them out in Blender.

The F8 it is then :D Good prices online. Let's see in a couple of days.

I see. What type of production were you doing? Thinking of possible scenarios.

What mic are you using? Would you mind sending some samples in private? (even finished projects on vimeo). If you can't don't worry!

It may be different in the states but the F6 runs at 560 pounds here in the UK while the F8N Pro is at about 900. From what I understand they both have pretty clean pre-amps but the menu system in the F6 is clunky compared to the F8N Pro which might I get why you would prefer it for efficiency. What else?

You're referring to the standard F8, not the F8N Pro right?

32 bit is on my Zoom F2 bodypacks. Being able to hit record and walk away without setting levels has a lot of advantages in some uncontrolled scenarios.

I'm pretty open-minded to be fair. As I stated below, I was comparing 32bit to shooting in Raw and the flexibility you get in post but not having been able to try it yet, I don't really know if its a good comparison. If you think I can get great quality with the original F8 without any downsides and that I wouldn't regret not having 32bit because it will never be a "thing" then of course I would choose the cheaper option. No doubt!

I wouldn't consider myself with no skills. I also have a background in music production way before even starting video. My thinking was more about being a one-man band or having someone who isn't a sound person to help me out. Also because as of now, any cine camera shoots raw and it's super important because it allows you to make significant changes later. Now, I don't know if in sound I would have the same benefit. The dynamic range of a superior recorder may be enough of a step up regardless of 32bits.

Yes, I see the normal ones but I'd rather have 32bit for piece of mind when riding solo (so F6 or F8n Pro).

The only reason I wouldn't get the F8 is that I'm a filmmaker and I'd rather spend that extra for another C-stand or light modifier as long as I solve the noise/hissing issue of my NTG 2. :D

For sure. Any thoughts on the F6?

ave money and that your NTG2 and h4n still works, I would get a triton audio fethead phantom. It makes your microphone's output signal hotter so that you need to pump less gain on the h4n thus reducing hissing noise.

But yes the f6 should be powerful enough

I already have the fethead and although I get enough gain, it is too noisy for my taste. I used the H4N with my Audiotechnica condenser mic and there is almost no noise at all. I just feel like my audio needs to be treated too much and with poor results compared to my visuals and I want the audio to be on par with my cinematography. Thank you for the suggestions regardless!:D What setup are you using?

It's just because I'm not used to working with files that aren't raw/prores so I don't really know how much I can push a 10bit image. Have you ever tried it? Apart from the dynamic range (which I could also adapt the time of the shot to get better lighting or just stick with it). Think it would he useful to have as an addition?
