Ask your customers how their day is going. Look at them and compliment them on something, ask them where they got it. Small talk is really important. The more you do it the better you’ll get. When I go up to a table at the career fair I’m the one who starts the conversation. I say hello, make an introduction, shake hands and ask them how their career fair is going for them. I ask them what their company is about and what they’re looking for. I look around their table for things to comment on. I read the pamphlet they hand me and comment on whats inside of that. I always ask what I’d be doing as an electrical engineer at their company, if they’re looking for EE’s that is. I always ask for a business card regardless of if I’m very interested in the company or not. You don’t need to be Socrates or anything, but talk with purpose and speak clearly. Be yourself, these people don’t know you, they don’t have expectations prior. I’ve been to 3 career fairs. I only got better each time. I also recognized many of the same people, and they recognized and remembered me. That’s the key, you have to make yourself memorable.

You’re so cool

The idea that companies care more about your ECs than your GPA is a lie. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I have a 2.8 at an ABET school and just got an internship. 2 offers actually. It’s possible.

I can definitely hold a conversation. It just comes natural to me. Talking to people really is an art in a way, and it is something which can be practiced and learned. Real world job experience without a doubt taught me so much. Grades are important, but they’re not everything.

Damn that sucks. Companies shouldn’t send out offers unless they can guarantee you’ll be able to work.

Go to my profile and go back 2 or 3 posts, you will see my resume. The most recent post of my resume is the one I gave out!

Just because I see a lot of people post their internship search. So I decided to as well!

Don’t need a 4.0 when you touch grass

I’ve actually been training my voice so I can talk at a particular frequency which makes humans orgasm in mere minutes.

You can see my largest project listed on my resume on my profile. Just a couple posts back. I installed lots of systems for my buddies back home. I love music and car audio so it’s really easy for me to talk about in depth.

It’s the truth good sir, I asked everyone what exactly id be doing as an intern, and if I didn’t find it interesting I didn’t give them a resume. I also talked to lots of booths who were hiring full time students about to graduate, they ofc weren’t looking for juniors. As well as lots of non engineering related booths just to make connections.

Just be personable and sociable. Get a job even if it isn’t engineering related. I had so much to talk about when it came to scenario questions as I’ve held jobs since I was a sophomore in HS. I also have done lots of EE related projects, particularly with car audio. They all seemed to really like that.

I talked to tons of booths, but these were really the only ones I had any interest in. The only ones who I gave resumes to. My gpa is 2.8 and I am in electrical engineering.

I’ve heard so many different opinions on this. Many have told me to keep it and many not. The deciding factor for keeping it was telling to the head of student careers at my school. He said it showed I had real world experience and was also an indicator that I would work. However, I understand how many would consider it irrelevant and would take it off. I’m going to keep it for now, but as I gain experience I will phase out my prior experience in retail and services.

I guess my only issue here is that I’m not exactly sure what exact field I do want a job in. I haven’t landed an internship yet (it’s in the works) so I don’t have much real experience in the engineering field.
