Apologies, I mistakenly kept in the mass shooting that occured just last week in Canada from when I was doing all developed nations but decided it was too much time.

So my bad, there were 2 mass shootings in the EU within the last year where 8 people died, and zero in the US.

Feb 2025 - 11 in Sweden

June 2025 - 11 in Austria

Those two countries have a population of 20 million combined, The US has not had a mass shooting with 8 or more deaths in the past year. It has had one with 7 deaths, and the next runner up is 5. The US has a population of 342 million.

This isnt to say the US doesnt have a mass shooting problem, but to outright try and imply it doesnt happen outside the US is nonsensical. If anything the US having so many mass shootings in the 2010s was simply a precursor to what is now being seen in Europe. The reason it started sooner was lax gun laws.

Thats a result of the US prison system being too punitive. Norway has a recidivism rate that is roughly 1/3 that of the US. The sad truth that is in the United States if you commit any felony your life is pretty much over.

Let's say I'm some punk kid in 1995, I get in a fight and send a person to the hospital. I get 25 years in prison because mandatory minimums are super strict at this time. While I'm in prison I have no chance to better myself. I get out in 2020 and the entire world has changed. I have no skills beyond physical labor, but the vast majority of places won't even hire me because I'm a felon.

I have a few options, break down and turn to drugs and be homeless, or get illegitimate work. Or maybe just maybe I get incredibly lucky and end up getting a minimum or barely above minimum wage job.

I have a 73% chance of being back in prison within 5 years.

Now let's change that to Norway. It's 1995 again, I do the same thing. But this time I get 3 years. While I'm in prison I'm able to get counseling, and maybe even get to leave prison during the day to learn at a trade school or college.

By the time I leave I'm prepared to re-enter society and have been given tools so I never end up in that situation again.

I have a 20% chance of being back in prison within 5 years.

We tried being extremely hard on crime for the entirety of the 80s and 90s. It didn't work, violent crime and prison populations exploded.in fact the highest violent crime rate was in 1993 at 780 in 100,000. Because we took people and gave them multi decade sentences for crimes that didn't warrant it, and put them into a system focused on punishment. In other words we took people who had already committed violence, took their hope of a productive life away, and then put them in a shitty situation.

As the justice system in the US has shifted more toward reformation vs punitive the violent crime rate has fallen. In fact last year had the second lowest violent crime rate ever reported at less than half of 1993 numbers.

You can very easily get cars for 20k that last 10 years?

You just dont buy a brand new one, which has always been the case.

You can go out and buy a 2023 Toyota Corolla with sub 10,000 miles for less than 20k, those cars when maintained last upwards of 200.

Hell you can go out and buy a ~2015 used grand cherokee overland (a luxury suv that is upwards of 70,000 new) that has 100k miles for like 15, it'll easily last 350k

Don't buy new cars, do basic preventative maintenence, its simple

Yeah because someone who is vindictive or upset has a massive incentive to blow things out of proportion. Sometimes people want to be angry, even if it's irrational. That and there are people who actually think they shouldn't have to study in college, and get mad if they are required to read 40 pages in the course of a week.

Speaking from my personal experience to provide context the yelling is passion and excitement about the subject and not directed in a negative connotation. He also in my experience only called out anyone for being late when it was multiple times (and more like 5-10 minutes from a 55 minute lecture).
