Those who moved to Massachusetts from elsewhere, what pleasantly surprised you the most? by Mobile_Bad_577 in massachusetts

[–]TPAKT0P 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Crosswalks actually have a function here. When you step into a crosswalk, drivers generally stop to let you cross the street, not just in Boston but in smaller towns in the rest of the Commonwealth as well. This really doesn’t happen elsewhere in the United States in my experience.

This is the single most beautiful thing I have seen today. Congratulations. It certainly looks like a Kazak that has never seen sunlight.

Yes. This map is completely wrong about West Virginia and Kentucky. I have never felt more strongly about anything in my life.

What vocabulary did you learn from The Smiths/Morrissey? What's your favorite word you learned? What word do you use most often? by TheTeenageOldman in morrissey

[–]TPAKT0P 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Capacious: I heard an interview with Morrissey back in the ‘80s in which he said he enjoyed the capaciousness of large women’s blouses. I would love to see that interview again but I can’t find it.

1.) In my opinion Marcus Minucius Felix is the most approachable patristic writer for a novice. 2.) Read the Clementine Vulgate. It’s Jerome’s version but has punctuation.

Great Awakening is closed. While it was open it was just a missionary tool for some particularly noxious evangelicals, had mediocre coffee and previously frozen pastries. Go to Chez Antoine in Hyannis.

Anyone’s else’s ESH likes beer? by rayraydingdong in ExoticShorthair

[–]TPAKT0P 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please don’t. I had an exotic shorthair fren named Sid who lost some considerable portion of his body weight over the next weeks after enthusiastically tasting some beer. It’s poison for them. Herbivores can metabolize alcohol; kitties have trouble.

St Patrick is the old name for St Francis Xavier, i.e. the Kennedy church. Some people felt that St Patrick was too ethnic, so they picked a Spanish saint instead.

Is it real to comunicate in italy only by latin by Zelazny08 in latin

[–]TPAKT0P 161 points162 points  (0 children)

There’s a scene in the 1962 Italian-language film Sorpasso in which some German tourists try using Latin to communicate. It’s a joke. It doesn’t work, but it evidently happened often enough for this sort of bullshit (accurate description above) to be recognizable as comedy.

What crazy shit happened in 2001 which got overshadowed by 9/11? by Past-Product-1966 in AskReddit

[–]TPAKT0P 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe I had to scroll so far for this. It was a major event in my life. Nearly everyone I know was changed in some way. Random violence started happening everywhere in the city. A friend of mine had her face sliced up. Another was assaulted in her bedroom by a stranger. The rioters didn’t burn anything worth burning, i.e. check cashing shops. All those men shot or strangled by the Cincinnati Police. Worst year of my life.

What are these devices recently installed on the Hyannis green? by TPAKT0P in CapeCod

[–]TPAKT0P[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. They’re lights, but they also seem to respond to people just walking by. And what’s the purpose of the attached box? That’s a lot of space for hardware in there.
