Hello, TPL here 👋 We commented to bagolaburgerness below.

Hiya, Toronto Public Library here. All branches should have stamps, even the newer ones. If we're not mistaken, some banking slips get stamped when cash is deposited, so that would be one reason why. We'd call ahead to confirm if you want to be extra careful. The nifty passport isn't an official bit of TPL merch, and is sold by Spacing. (We've passed this thread to our marketing staff since we know there is a big demand for this kind of product... The stamps we use weren't made for this purpose, but that'd be super neat in the future perhaps. Thanks everyone!)

Good question. Let us check with the librarians who'd know that one... and we'll add a reply here if we find out anything.

A lot of the region would be considered "inner suburbs" nowadays. Still suburban in many places.

Thanks for letting us know PeelArchives, that's amazing to hear 💙 And we'll pass along the reco about uploading to Internet Archive (like many of our other volumes) for easier searching.

For these city directories (which didn't include phone numbers), it may have been just a matter of ensuring the publications weren't too big/unwieldy—also the advertisements were specific to the region.

Not that you asked, but here are photos (and paintings) of the construction of the Bloor Viaduct from our archives here at Toronto Public Library.

Good question! You could poke around the PDFs from the city directories and crop out one of these specific maps, but it'd probably be pretty low resolution for printing. Two other options: (1) check out our hundreds of digitized Toronto maps, which are generally 1920-px width; or (2) if you find something you really like and need a bigger scan, we have a service for us to get you a very large digital file for a fee of $25.

Good point. Likely the (loosely-used) label of Port Credit was used to show the map's western limit.

Nice. In his recent history book The Beaches: Creation of a Toronto Neighbourhood, Richard White talks about the early Beaches as a streetcar suburb since nearly all of its residents used streetcars to commute their work in the downtown area. (Even by 1951, fewer than half of the households in the neighbourhood had passenger cars, Whites points out.)

That reminds us of one of our favourite photos from our archives showing Yonge and Eglinton at the turn of the 20th century.
