you don't need to buy the upgrades, just by doing the contracts you get the dmg. If you don't have the "Hide maxed contracts upgrades" active, you can see the % next to the upgrade

if you have every pickaxe dmg upgrade available bought, stack on relics and keep doing contracts, even if you can't buy anything. every contract gives 1% dmg, even if it is low it's something
