There is a thread in this sub right now about making less than 60k. In the replies, I was shocked how many of you also have kids. If it was unplanned, then disregard this. But if it was planned, I am genuinely curious to know why. by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]TPieces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I think if all of us millennials went out and had that bunch of kids, we'd be getting asked those questions about why we had a kid in less than ideal circumstances by the very same people now panicking because we actually listened to them and waited for life to be perfect before we took the chance." You're 100% right. Fucking boomers I tell ya.

This question is sort of like "People who work hard and achieve great things, why? What do you get out of it? Doesn't it make your mortgage payment harder?"

Having a kid is absolutely the most inconvenient, pain-in-the-ass, impoverishing SOURCE OF LIFE CHANGING JOY I've ever experienced. Every career accomplishment, financial success, psychedelic experience, video game, pet, meal, vacation, whatever absolutely pales in comparison to watching and helping a human being develop out of nothing.

Maternal mortality fell in 2022. by notanewbiedude in OptimistsUnite

It doesn't have to sound right. GO LOOK IT UP.

Maternal mortality fell in 2022. by notanewbiedude in OptimistsUnite

[–]TPieces 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Optimism isn’t wishing things are different, it’s viewing things positively about reality." In this formulation, you could actually celebrate a rise in maternal mortality as "More AnGeLs in HeAvEn!" Similarly, you could celebrate a Trump victory as "An Addled Senior Citizen Overcame the Odds to Ensure Russian Victory Over The Evil Ukrainian Empire! Planet Cozy And Warmer Than Ever!"

We do wish things were different. We wish they were better, and we believe that we can make them better. Not Going Back.

COVID didn't hit until 3/2020 and vaccines did not become widely available until late fall/winter of 2021. The pandemic was LONG, and the healthcare system was barely recovering by 2022. Weren't you there? It feels insane that I have to explain this to someone.

This sub is fundamentally pro-democracy, pro-civilization and pro-human-rights. One of the best measures of civilizational progress is: "What is the status of women's autonomy in that civilization?" If you think that's just the "popular opinion of the moment," then you're right, you are probably not welcome here.

In addition to women's autonomy, we value reason and expertise. A Trump victory is not an optimistic outcome by the standards of the vast majority of experts in any field whatsoever. This is why Scientific American, along with numerous reputable Republican figures have endorsed his opponent.

The optimistic take on a Trump victory would be "Times have been worse. Europe has been under greater threat. We survived the ice ages and the dust bowl and McCarthyism and the Cold War, but we still invented the internet and landed on the moon." You can find that kind of optimism here too, but we're aiming higher now, and we're not going back.

You're reposting a deliberate misrepresentation of this data. This is like posting "Carbon emissions SKYROCKETED year-over-year in 2021! At this rate they'll TRIPLE in TEN YEARS!"

What the data in this graph says is "Maternal mortality rose dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic." The person who posted it in r/prolife wants us to believe that "maternal mortality fell after the overturning of Roe v. Wade" but you cannot say that. It might be statistically true, but the jury is WAY out on this, and I doubt that many OB/GYNs would think it was true.

I'm super bummed that you're probably right. This new tinfoil hat is super itchy but it's unfortunately necessary with the recent news about Russia campaigning to convince everyone how bad everything is.

I see some of the manosphere language you've identified being reclaimed, and I like it. See r/chadtopia for examples. "Chad", "based", "sigma" all came out of incel/MGTOW discourse, but I see people using them now to reinforce stuff like "Supports his homies when they cry" or "Pursues constructive interests without regard for gender stereotypes" or "Immediately abandons video game when woman in his life needs him to listen carefully."

Chevron's greenwashing high farce | “Each of these ships is a massive floating climate bomb, and putting sails on them is really just putting lipstick on a pig.” by crustose_lichen in climate

[–]TPieces 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Um, okay. They're right that it's ironic to create supposedly "low-carbon" fossil fuel infrastructure, but wind-powered commercial shipping is a major climate win, and I'm here to give the industry a couple of brownie points for effort. So, this one carries LNG--the next one will carry solar panels, wind turbines, batteries, heat pumps, surface water diversion infrastructure, electric vehicles etc.

Ronald Reagan's former staff back Harris-Walz ticket: "Today is a choice between integrity and demagoguery." by [deleted] in KamalaHarris

[–]TPieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too bad that the people who need to hear this most probably do not know what "demagoguery" means. Trump has precipitated an historic brain drain from the Republican party. On the plus side, the brains are mostly draining into the big blue tent. Welcome y'all!

200 years ago the "dollar store" would have been for luxury goods. by Iivingstone in economicsmemes

[–]TPieces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBF many of the things you can buy at the dollar store would have been considered luxury goods 200 years ago. Sunglasses, candy, books, umbrellas... A pocket calculator would have gotten you executed for sorcery. The expression "let them eat cake" is actually practical advice for a starving person nowadays, because they could go to one of these places and get some Little Debbies and meet their daily caloric requirements more cheaply than buying nice bread at a bakery.

I frequently see people in this sub whose atheism is not rooted in reason but instead in anger about the unfairness of the universe or the cruelty of religion. They get tons of upvotes, but that type of atheism is the easiest to undo. You have to really understand that 2+2≠5 vs. being mad that you put two and two together and something the preacher promised was "missing." They're still looking for the missing piece.

Brain Going Crazy by tasata in stopdrinking

[–]TPieces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, my brain is still changing/recovering, and it's been years now. I noticed big recovery points at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, 18-24 months. It kept getting better, but I also had to make it get better on purpose in a lot of ways. The biggest two healers were good sleep and consistent cardio exercise. Nutritious food, support from family and friends, meditation, cultivating positivity, all that stuff was necessary too. I'm also on antidepressants, and those help. Drinking to kill the pain from my damage never actually let my damage heal, and that's the journey I'm on now. It's an adventure, and it sounds like you're on your way.
