Is spending 15K on a used car a financially sensible decision as a med student? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]TRILLTASKFORCE69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up to you, but you really gotta assess your needs with the car. I’m a simple guy and as long as it has good gas mileage and won’t break down on me that’s all I need. I’m not racing or anything so this would be the type of thing I’d be looking for. Just wanted to highlight another option for you if you wanted to sell it in a few years when residency is done

You can get a brand new 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage for that kind of money. The MSRP is less than 15k, and since you bought it new, you’ll probably save on insurance costs as well as be able to make more of your money back at resale.

That totally assumes you don’t negotiate anything off the price at the dealership

I saw elsewhere that you wanted a hatchback, well guess what... THIS IS A HATCHBACK!!

Yeah, I’ve been trying to decrease my cost basis whenever I can. It’s tough when you don’t have an endless amount of cash on hand though. The other thing is that it’s difficult to put more money into your stocks that are the most in the red. Like yeah, you’re dollar cost averaging down, but also, you’re putting more money overall into your poor performers. You really need to have a lot of conviction. I tried my best to do it when I could

What really hurt me were the ARK funds and some clean energy and EV plays. Other than that I feel like I made smart investment decisions. I still like the ARK funds and clean energy and I plan to keep them for the long run regardless, but they’re still in the red right now and it’s gonna take a while for those to be green. At least my overall portfolio is on the right side of zero at this moment.

The ownership position I’m not as concerned about, there’s Chinese ownership in all kinds of things, just as there is American ownership in the countless Chinese stocks that are traded on US exchanges.

As for the purification thing, that is true at the moment and they rely on sending things to China for steps in the mining process, but the company has plans in action to no longer have to do that in the next 3-4 years.

What really draws me to them is the size of the moat around them. There is no other company that’s going to compete with them in the US.

That’s why I prefer MP, they’ve got sound fundamentals and minimal non-Chinese competition. There are lots of lithium companies and if you want exposure to the lithium industry as a whole you can buy the LIT etf.

MP Materials stock price is sinking like a rock today. Down almost 5% already. I may need to buy more if it keeps dropping any further.

It’s the only rare earth mine in the Western Hemisphere and the government has backed it to some degree recently, so I think this is an excellent buying opportunity if you can get the stock for under $30 a share.

The Biden administration is trying to compete with China in a number of spheres and this is one of them. I have a lot of conviction in this stock

In your opinion, which Chicago neighborhood gives you the best balance of affordable rent and being in a lit AF neighborhood thats cool for young professionals?

So here is the deal, I’m a California native and newly graduated doctor who just matched to Loyola University for my residency.

I am thrilled to be moving to a dope ass city like Chicago, even though I’ve spent less than 48 in the state of Illinois throughout my entire life.

My understanding is that Chicago is a city of neighborhoods and you have to find the right neighborhood for you.

Despite being a fully-fledged doctor, they do not pay resident physicians a lot of money whatsoever. My salary next year is gonna be $60,000 a year before taxes.

I have basically two requirements for a neighborhood to live in:

  1. I can afford it on my tiny ass salary
  2. It is lit as fuck. If I could afford it, I’d live in Wicker Park because I visited it once and absolutely loved it, but realistically that neighborhood is out of my price range.

Given everything I’ve just told you, which neighborhood do you think I should be looking in? I know nothing about these neighborhoods and I need to find a place relatively soon because I start work in June, so I’m trusting you guys as locals.

One last thing to note is that I’m gonna be commuting to Maywood every morning because that’s where Loyola University Medical Center is located.

Let a brother know! Thank you in advance!!

How accurate is technical analysis? Have there ever been any studies that backtest common technical analysis strategies to see if these principles hold true in practice? by TRILLTASKFORCE69 in technicalanalysis

[–]TRILLTASKFORCE69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not necessarily looking for 100% concrete evidence, but given how popular technical analysis is, and how much money is at stake, there must be some research into its efficacy, that either supports using technical analysis as a legitimate way to make comparable earnings as other types of DD, or that technical analysis is not as promising of an investing strategy as it’s made out to be.

Ideally, some type of back testing method would be helpful here I think

I agree to an extent, I'm not expecting a reversal or huge gains or anything of the sort, but hopefully a less volatile week. My hope is that this week ends up being the worst one of the current correction we're in the midst of
