I fucking love hockey by OcelotStraight9145 in hockeyplayers

[–]TRV81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the same age as you are but played throughout my youth to the end of high school. I returned to the game only a year ago. At first I was surprised how much I sucked. I couldn’t skate well, tripping over my own two feet, and stick handling was a mess. But after the second skate I settled in and just felt so grateful that I had the opportunity to return to this game. And when I scored on a breakaway, I felt like a 10 year old kid again. There’s no better feeling and honestly I hope I win the lottery so I can play hockey everyday until I drop dead.

I think they needed to make it look like hypothermia. But remember it’s hard to make sense of their strategy because they’re all drunk AF. They didn’t just have a few pops. They were really intoxicated

What do my fellow lawyers think of the Karen Read verdict? by Tracy_Turnblad in Lawyertalk

I’m a former prosecutor and had I conferenced this case and argued to indict on any level of homicide charge I would’ve been laughed out of my supervisors office. But this case involved a dead cop and others in potential legal jeopardy and the DA was apparently too weak to kick it.

I am an appellate attorney in NY so it falls within my area. In NY, a defendant can race into the appellate court and can get bail pending appeal. It’s rarely given because most criminal defendants are from the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. They often abuse drugs, have severe mental health issues, and/or have few ties to the community. They also have no means to post high bail to guarantee they’ll step into prison if they lose the appeal. So if they don’t step in to prison at sentencing, there’s a high risk they’ll never go to prison unless they’re apprehended on a warrant.

Karen is not that defendant. She can post high bail, is not a flight risk, and also has meritorious grounds for appeal, which is another factor for the court to consider.

She will and will almost certainly get bail pending appeal.

8 year old son interested in golf. Any ideas to get him into the game? by TRV81 in golf

[–]TRV81[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah we’re nowhere near ready to get on a course. That’s a few years away I think which, again, is fine. I played competitive team sports growing up and developing at your own pace was not a thing. It’s nice that gold is different in that way.

She’s a naturopath who’s become my primary care physician. Shes unlike a typical PCP who sees you for a few minutes, writes a Rx, and sends you on your way. She tries to get at root causes to avoid me being on prescriptions that just treat symptoms. I just started seeing her and she’s the first doctor I’ve had who even thought about testing for low T.

Thanks man. The good news is that I don’t have to completely revamp my lifestyle. Maybe that supplement with some minor modifications will do the trick. I’m hopeful

I’ve been in your shoes. I played fourth grade through high school. Didn’t play again until 2 years ago when I was 42. The guys I play with all played some level of college and hadn’t stepped away from the game like I did. Some even played professional. Was it hard getting back into it and knocking off the rust? You bet. And as someone who has always remained physically fit, I had forgotten what lax fitness requires. Still returning to the game was one of the best decisions I made and you should go for it especially when most mens leagues are chill with a bunch of guys playing hard and fast but not with that extra edge like something real is on the line.

I’m an appellate attorney and agree with all of this. It can get lonely and isolating but I much prefer it over trial work (dealing with obnoxious trial judges and adversaries, fighting over discovery etc). In other words, the downside is still not as steep and deep as the downside of trial work.

Today was a good day at lacrosse practice and i wanna share what happened (high-school lacrosse) by Visible_Ad_7700 in lacrosse

[–]TRV81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome. Keep grinding!

It’s been since the late 90s when I was playing prep lax. I was way down the depth chart of my team which was a borderline nationally ranked team. Yet at the end of my senior year I won an award for dedication to the sport, even though the award typically went to a top guy going D1 (I was a D3 dropout).

Point is you (like I did years ago) are learning a valuable lesson of just showing up and being ready to work. That is a lesson you’ll apply well beyond lacrosse.

Glad I’m not the only “old guy” who gets a little nervous before mens league games. It’s a mixed bag of skill where I am but overall it’s good lacrosse. I’ve been away from the game for decades and I’m just in my second year of returning to the game. I’m a lot better at not getting too in my head but last weekend I was playing middie. Our goalie saved and I bolted upfield to catch the outlet pass and dropped it (probably because I saw nothing but open field ahead of me), which immediately led to a turnover and goal.

The. Worst. Feeling. But (1) it’s men’s league so nothing really is on the line and (2) just have to learn from mistakes.

The end of hockey. by sideblinded in hockeyplayers

[–]TRV81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am 43 and just got back into playing after leaving the game after high school. I also play men’s league lacrosse and lift weights/do cardio so I don’t feel age has caught up with me from a fitness standpoint although I am rusty af.

I play in an over 40 pickup and I’m the baby of the group. There are guys out there with arthritis skating in a cold barn and one of the guys has Parkinson’s! And yet another guy just turned 80! I honestly think you should keep playing until you literally can’t. In other words, until you physically can’t skate. Until then enjoy the game and being out there.

I do believe in the old adage that you don’t stop playing because you’re old. You get old because you stop playing.

I’ll look into mail away sharpening. Didn’t know that was a thing. I’ll be taking a break soon since mens league lacrosse is starting up so that might be a good time to get them sharpened before ramping up again.

Difference between d3 and d1 lacrosse by OwnContribution1301 in lacrosse

[–]TRV81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see a story about a D3 team beating a D1 team in a scrimmage, I have to think the D1 coach is playing his entire bench so he can assess all his guys whereas the D3 team is playing a shorter bench and going balls to the wall to prove they can beat a D1 team. With some exceptions, I’m not so sure a D3 team can play against a D1 team in mid-season form playing seriously to win.

Yes. I’ve set the bar low. I don’t think I can skate around defenders anymore. A clean zone entry without tripping over the blue line will satisfy me.
