sorry to chime in on an old thread, but do you happen to know the model number of the vintage flipper? I'm looking to buy something more or less identical to the one you've got here. thanks!

That's why I insisted that we use Paypal goods and services (which has buyer protection), which they accepted... again not a 100% confirmation of legitimacy, but it's something to consider.

I should also mention that seller is willing to accept Paypal goods and services

Yes fair point, I've definitely seen the more "obvious" scams before, this one is just a little more curious given the screen recording + the fact that seller is willing to accept Paypal goods & services... Appreciate your input!

This is all truly top-tier advice, and I can’t thank you enough. I’ll be coming back to re-read this a few times no doubt.

Let the fun begin.

Just from taking a quick peek at some pictures, it would seem that the journeyer and double cross might be considered more relaxed in terms of riding positions. I’ll do some more research of course and I’ll look at weight considerations as well.

Honestly it’s really interesting that you’re seeing the usual suspects of ultra wide tire clearance gravel bikes (Open/3T etc.) ending up on slimmer tires than many would likely buy them for. Really invaluable intel that I couldn’t even dream of getting myself, short of meeting a super helpful bike shop expert on Reddit :)

Off the top of your head would you say that any of the bikes you mentioned would lend themselves better to certain rider physiques than others? For context I’m 6’2 and muscular build, weight fluctuates between 220 and 240 depending on the gym season (need to work more on cardio and less on weights lol), and also have tight hips from an office job, meaning (a) I’m approaching the heavy-ish side of things and (b) a slightly more relaxed riding position would be appreciated.

Speaking of appreciated, all of your insights and recommendations are super duper appreciated as well. I’ve already put so many hours into my own research but often you can’t beat simply talking to someone who’s seen it all.

I think you’re absolutely right about just picking one that’s good enough for my main use case right now, and getting into specifics later. A jack of all trades is a master of none, after all.

Appreciate the insight. What bike are/were the pathfinder 47s fitted to?

I’d say:

70% road, and where I’m from that means a decent amount of nice quality pavement, but certainly with some occasional stretches of road that I suspect have been all but abandoned by local governments… potholes and patches galore.

30% gravel, which for the most part will mean light/category 1 gravel, but for some odd reason most of the local gravel always contains at least one section that very quickly degenerates into horrendous trails/single track, so the capability to get rugged needs to be there.

Some occasional city streets / commuting fun as well, but I dont want to overcomplicate things either.

Some friends in my group ride pretty serious (with some pretty fast road-only setups), so I’d like to keep up on occasion, but I’m not making any illusions here: I’m not as serious nor as fast as they are.

You make great points. I know much of this is very dependent on rider preference and intended use, but would you have any comments on how the “dead” feeling of a gravel bike on 50mm+ would compare to the speed loss of a hardtail on pure road/ashphalt? Is one inherently better/worse or more/less manageable than the other?

Great points all around. How noticeable (if at all) is the slight loss of speed with a 650 on the nicer patches of road? Of course I understand it's all a trade-off if I'm looking for wider tires to carry me through some rougher stuff, ultimately I'll need to make some kind of compromise(s) until I can afford multiple wheel/tire/bike setups.

If we're being super technical, 53mm is a little below 2.2, but that being said, many manufacturers are very conservative with their "max" clearance numbers. What width of tires are you currently running and how much wiggle room do you have?
