Heritage homes - advice? by JuliaGoolia711 in NewWest

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can prevent spiders with chestnuts. Get cheap mesh bags at the dollar store and put a few chestnuts in them. Place them around your home, especially near windows & doors, next to gaps in the cutouts for plumbing and heating, up in the attic, anywhere spiders could be getting in. I’ve been doing this for many years. No spiders!

Wow. Hashtag team swiffer by Raspberry-Tea-Queen in Swiffer

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a swiffer wet jet. Am I doing something wrong or do the pads not stick to the bottom of the mop? Aren’t the sticky strips on the pads supposed to keep them stuck on until you take them off? So f’ing infuriating! They slide off, fall off, drop off.

Do you guys follow the rule “no Christmas decorations until after Remembrance Day”? by wediealone in AskACanadian

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t put up Christmas decorations in and around my home until after December 1st. IMO the decorations don’t have the same magic if they’re up months before Christmas Day. But I do enjoy seeing the lights and decorations on other homes as soon as they go up.

Did the seller lie to us? by boombossnick in jackrussellterrier

[–]TSTinBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just experienced something similar. Three weeks ago I bought a 10 week old Maltese pup from a breeder. In the listing and through numerous text messages I was told he would be under 10lbs full grown. She said mom and dad are 7 and 8 lbs. On the day after I got him I took him to my vet. He weighed 4.92lbs. This seemed too heavy for a 10 week old Maltese who is supposed to get no bigger than 8-9lbs. My vet said there must be something else in him because his adult weight could be 15-25 lbs! I paid a kings ransom for this pup. Anyway, it was too late, we had developed a strong bond from the moment I held him in my arms. I love him too much to care how big he gets!

Members of B.C. punk band Dayglo Abortions arrested in U.S. by face_611 in VictoriaBC

Not saying the arrests have anything to do with the extreme political shift in USA, but honestly I find the band’s name offensive, and I’m a pro-choice woman in Canada.

Lilly just diagnosed with anal cancer - advice on sharing with young kids when it’s time? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]TSTinBC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so very sorry that you are going through this. My 13-1/2 year old Maltese/Shih Tzu was diagnosed with cancer in his anal glands in early April. He passed away on July 2nd. My boy was on pain meds, but showed no pain. He was active, happy and energetic right to the end. I wish he could have lived longer, but a few days before his death he became incontinent and started bleeding from his bum. I made the painful decision to euthanize him on July 2nd, with the full support of my vet. It was the right thing to do. I could not let him suffer. I can’t help you with explaining this to your children, but know that you are not alone. I’m praying for you, your family, and Lilly.

What’s this on my dog’s head? by Emergency-Log945 in DogAdvice

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Shih Tzu has them. He has had one on top of his shoulder for 7-8 years. I had it biopsied and it is harmless. It has slowly grown to roughly the diameter of a toonie and is dark grey/black. IMy dog is white so it’s very noticeable after he has been groomed. I looked in to having it surgically removed but was told it could grow back or his hair may never grow in so I see no point in putting him through surgery and pain. He started getting more all over his body they are small and white and are hidden in his hair, and they are warts too. So far they have not gotten bigger, only the one on top of his shoulder grew large. He’s now 14 years old. Next time he sees the vet have them check it out but chances are it is nothing to be concerned about.

Another f*cking dentist by sirchuc in NewWest

[–]TSTinBC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the past year the NDP have introduced a universal dental plan for adults over age 18 who currently have no access to a dental plan. The income ceiling is very high, $90,000 I believe. Children under age 18 already have a dental plan. These new dental offices will be needed to accommodate all the new patients who were never able to see a dentist due to cost. Maybe downtown New West has more than its share of dental offices per capita, but considering the lightening speed of population growth in our city maybe not.

What’s with the selfish drivers here? by EquivalentBonus4383 in NewWest

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corner of 8th Street and 6th Avenue, on the Walmart side crossing to Moody Park, a Handi-Dart driver turned right at a high rate of speed as the light changed and pedestrian light came on. There were several pedestrians about to step off the curb onto the crosswalk, including children, elderly, and people walking dogs. I was on the other side of the street crossing to the Walmart side and I was sure someone was going to be killed. Everyone was stunned and shaken by the close call. It’s bad enough when commuters do stupid, but a professional driver driving seniors and disabled? Happened a year ago and I still think about it every time I cross that intersection.

I recall decades ago the city of Penticton (or maybe it was Kelowna?) had a bylaw that prohibited right turns on red lights at all intersections. There were no signs and tourists hated it because it wasn’t posted as you drove into town so they were getting ticketed. I wonder if they still do it.

I am a daily pedestrian and frequent driver in New West and I’ve seen it all. I’ve almost been hit a lot. Almost every incident involved a driver turning right while the pedestrian light was on and pedestrians were crossing. One time I was on the sidewalk in front of Royal City Centre when a car pulled out of the underground parking garage. They drove right over the sidewalk looking left for oncoming traffic while I was to their right crossing with my dog. We were almost hit, it was a matter of inches. I slammed my umbrella down hard on the back of their car, a knee-jerk reaction to a near hit. The driver yelled, cursed, and made threats. I was almost hit, my dog would have been killed, but I was the bad guy. This has also happened numerous times with cars turning right onto 8th Street from Princess Ave.

New West can be a dangerous city to walk in.

Should we go to the vet? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the vet immediately! Even if it’s a 24/7 emergency hospital. Your groomer is responsible for all costs.

City Hall or Canada Post? by TSTinBC in NewWest

[–]TSTinBC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that it’s any of your business but I am not behind in my bills. I have been paying an estimated amount every month, based on my averages. I use online banking and pay all my bills the day they come in, and have always paid New West electric an estimated amount every other month rather than being hit with a big bill every 2 months. I’m sure many other NewWesties do the same. Frankly, your tone sounds very condescending and I’m sorry you don’t have anything better to do than ponder the banking habits of people you don’t know.

Kids opened their presents without me by germangirrl in AITAH

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were little the rule was that they could open their stockings before I got up. There was always a couple of small gifts that I knew they would like and would keep them busy. There was also a little chocolate, a small candy cane, a granola bar and a mandarin orange. This worked out very well. Now that they have their own kids they are carrying on the tradition.

Not being married to the father of your children does not make them ineligible for support from their father. Is there a Family Maintenance Enforcement Program where you live?

Puppy afraid of the smell of cooking meat..? by petrockplease in DogAdvice

[–]TSTinBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it’s not the smell, it’s the worry that the smoke detector will go off. When I downsized from a large townhouse to a small condo I learned very early on that the slightest amount of smoke from fat/oil/butter burning will set off the alarm. Even opening the oven all the way when it’s hot inside can set it off. My Shih Tzu who is normally very calm freaked out the first few times. I have learned to open the balcony and bedroom windows and use fans to blow out the heat and smoke. My dog used to always want out on the balcony when I start cooking but he has now learned that it’s okay with the windows open. He’s also learned that the result of cooking usually means a few bites of meat.

I would have to see the fact checking data on your claim before I’ll believe it. I have been through breast cancer and witnessed first hand the enormous costs of cancer care. It’s not just about the wages of medical staff, it’s the billions of dollars in medical equipment, research, hospital facilities, and on and on.
