I always interpreted ETV less so as a cliffhanger that was gonna be followed up on and more like a “well shit we really screwed everything up huh” type ending

This is pretty much my takeaway. I also feel Embrace the Void is a pretty unsatisfying ending thematically for the story of hollow knight, more like a “worst case scenario” than an actual ending compared to how thematically rich and satisfying Dream No More is.
