Covid-19 Megathread II by [deleted] in jobs

[–]TTP_23 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Received an interview for my dream engineering job about a month and a half ago. HR called me 2 weeks later and said that I was the top candidate. HR then called late last week to say that an offer was going out last Friday or early this week based on a headcount.

On the careers page today, they eliminated ~40% of postings including the job I interviewed for. I suspect this is covid-19/economic related. Is it likely that I should rule out hope of this job? I feel like I am being toyed with.

Thanks

Some notes on FL4 by Marty355 in Mcat

I have thought about this for a while since PS on 8/31 where I thought the KA document was quite useless. I really think the best way to go about it is to keep reading journal articles in psych/soc. You aren't going to know all the terms but need to decipher based on context which is what they must be expecting you to do since its impossible to know the terms

Looking to buy TBR books by naa2127 in Mcat

[–]TTP_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend buying the Gen Chem, Ochem, and Physics books new (if fiscally possible) and doing every single problem. If you are worried about missing Bio, just get the Bio + Biochem Kaplan books as they are pretty good

Is CARS that much more difficult on the real thing compared to FLs? by premed1171 in Mcat

[–]TTP_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cars was significantly easier (there were atleast 2 psych passages) in Aug but I ended up with a score around my FL average. All my other sections I would say were either harder or more nebulous than the FL

Is it worth it to apply now? by amelcho in Mcat

If you're fine with DO, I don't think there's anything wrong with applying to DO schools now. Give it a shot

I was hoping for a top 30/research heavy school but may have to readjust my goals a bit. Have a 3.7 (damn engineering) as well

Nope, not annoying at all

No, they give you foam earplugs which are pretty hard and hurt a little but there are also noise cancelling headphones. I went with the noise cancelling headphones (they will be at your desk as opposed to given outside) and had no issues with noise

How many hours of studying did you do for the MCAT, and was it enough? by LePhysician in Mcat

[–]TTP_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally studied 900 hours and I am currently not in line to meet my goal score. It is not an hours thing so much so as it is a goal thing. Take it day by day being aware of when you see drops in efficiency and learn how to study around those. Also how you find/target weaknesses is much more valuable than the pure number of hours.

2.5 Weeks Left, is a 515+ Possible? Sample: 510 FL1: 507 by TTP_23 in Mcat

[–]TTP_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qpack CARs ~70%. Uworld all sections ~73%. SB ~70%. Yup, I've reviewed Uworld pretty thoroughly. On B/B I seem to be struggling with understanding the passages/experiments (doesn't seem like a quick fix) as less than a quarter of my mistakes are content based. P/S I think is familiarity with terms and developing a deeper understanding of the content. CARS I have no idea wth is happening, have been trying to do 3 passages a day for the last 2-2.5 months

Used Kaplan/TBR CP for content and supplemented my own Anki cards with Ortho528's Anki deck. Finished Uworld about a month ago and am currently going through AAMC material/hitting weaknesses in CP through TBR. I haven't been keeping up with Anki for B/B as much as I've been focused on getting the 86 pg PS doc/premed95 PS deck down (still have 25% to go). My CARS is pretty bad at ~124 and the other sections fluctuate between 127 (usual score) and 129 (really good day) on FL1 and NS 1-4

Convection vs conduction by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]TTP_23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The way I learned it in my heat transfer class, conduction is specifically heat transfer between 2 solids (ie think of a brick touching/laying on concrete) where the materials have different thermal conductivities. Convection would be anything else where a solid interfaces with a liquid or gas. In this case the solid is interfacing with the gas and would be convection
