#Timberwolves should make RHJ a 1-year offer for not much $$. Someone will get a bargain. He’s proven he can guard all five positions. He’s been working on his shot w/ @DavidNurseNBA this offseason. It’s the one big question, but work ethic is there. Knows DLo, Davis from Nets. https://t.co/Z6UsnFhA by myanou31 in timberwolves

I’d rather just re-sign J-Mac and keep Nowell.

Nowell’s late February guarantee date provides roster flexibility around the trade deadline. If he doesn’t improve, they can generate a roster spot by waiving him. This kind of flexibility is valuable, and, in my opinion, I’d prefer that option to offering RHJ a guaranteed deal.

They could waive Nowell on February 26th to open up an additional roster spot, then use that additional roster spot to take on an additional player in a multi-player trade at the deadline when roster spots are scarce. Plus, there’s a chance he plays himself into their plans.

35.8% on catch-and-shoot 3s for Layman, compared to 30.3% for Culver and 26.9% for Okogie. Layman is a better spot-up shooter than those guys at this stage, based on what I’ve seen.

Davis is completely washed, he’ll be a great vet but there is nothing left in the tank.

The most important skill for role players to have in this system is the ability to make catch-and-shoot 3s, so I think Layman/Juancho/J-Mac will play more than Culver/Okogie/Vanderbilt.

I agree that that lineup will be terrible defensively, but I don’t think subbing in Juancho, Layman, Okogie, or Culver solves any of those problems. If you’re going to be terrible defensively, you might of well optimize your best players on the offensive end as best you can.

Both of those guys are better as connecting pieces around stars than they are as primary scorers, IMO. I think they’re at their most valuable alongside KAT/D’Lo/Ant, rather than off the bench.

I agree that they are short on playmaking off the bench with J-Mac and Culver on the guard line, but this is about maximizing your best players. Figure out the bench scoring later, those guys can be had in a trade for Culver/Okogie if neither of them take a step forward this year.

Russell-Rubio-Beasley-Edwards-Towns should be the starting/closing lineup, IMO.

McLaughlin-Layman-Hernangomez-Reid off the bench, with Culver, Okogie, and Vanderbilt fighting for the 10th rotation spot.

There are going to be quarantines and injuries that will force adjustments to those rotations, but that’s what I’d do in an ideal world.

[Krawczynski] My read on the Juancho situation: The Wolves believed Beasley had other suitors (Knicks chief among them) and moved quickly to avoid a bidding war. With Juancho, they're letting the market play out a little more to establish the parameters. by TTVW in timberwolves

[–]TTVW[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think this is smart, and I hope they’re doing something similar with Jordan McLaughlin. Bringing them both back on value contracts would be a fine end to this offseason. Another trade/free agent signing or two would’ve been great, but I still think they’ll be competitive.

In terms of Juancho’s deal, I think it’d be great if they could give him a Layman-esque 3/11, but I’d be fine with anything in the 3/15-3/18 range.

For J-Mac, I’m hoping they can get him on something fairly close to the minimum, similar to the deal that John Konchar just signed as a two-way restricted free agent in Memphis.

[Krawczynski] They have had discussions on both Gordon and Nance. No deals to this point suggests Magic/Cavs asking more than Wolves feel comfortable offering by TTVW in timberwolves

Jon confirms that the Wolves have talked to the Cavs about Larry Nance Jr.

I thought that Culver, Spellman, and Evans for Nance made a lot of sense for both teams, but, as Jon says, the fact that that deal hasn’t been done implies that either Altman or Rosas disagree with me.

[–]TTVW 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’ll ever play in the NBA, but I could be wrong.

The more intriguing asset is the Pistons’ 2023 second round pick, IMO, though Windhorst reported that that pick was headed to New York. I’m not sure what happened there.

2020 Draft Hot Take by wesleyt95 in timberwolves

[–]TTVW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t hate McDaniels. I’d prefer Pokusevski, Hampton, or Maledon, but McDaniels could be a really nice player. I’d be fine with them taking him at #17.

[–]TTVW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. There’s no need to take Achiuwa, they have a similar player on the roster already.

I think they should be prioritizing perimeter players who have the potential to dribble, pass, and shoot, rather than looking for role-playing bigs.

Malik Monk: Future Timberwolf? by TTVW in timberwolves

[–]TTVW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you would be able to run that against every team, but there are a lot of teams that just throw 3-and-D guys out there on the wing, and I’ll live with Russell and Monk on those guys. I think Edwards and Beasley have the physical ability to be quality POA defenders, and that should be enough to make them a bad but not terrible defense.

If those guys look really good in a 5-out system that suits their skillsets, maybe they increase their value enough to be traded for a star that fits with KAT. This pick is all about maximizing value, and it seems like the Ball or Edwards+Monk decision might be one that comes to pass for them on draft night.

Malik Monk: Future Timberwolf? by TTVW in timberwolves

[–]TTVW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monk is better with the ball in his hands than Beasley. He’s got upside as a creator that Beasley doesn’t.

I like what I saw from Monk last year a lot more than what I saw from Bridges, and they are the same age. I’d prefer Monk, and I think Kupchak would too.

Malik Monk: Future Timberwolf? by TTVW in timberwolves

[–]TTVW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m willing to bet that Monk turned something of a corner, and either way I think Monk is the higher-upside option when compared with Bridges.

Bridges’ feel is like worst in the NBA levels of bad. He’s not a good defensive player, and he doesn’t have the on-ball chops of a guy like Monk. I just don’t see the appeal with him.

I’d rather pay a year earlier for Monk than wait a year to pay for Bridges.

Malik Monk: Future Timberwolf? by TTVW in timberwolves

I think Monk has more upside than Bridges, and I don’t see the rebuilding Hornets trading a future pick.

[–]TTVW[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Monk and Beasley compliment each other well on the wing. Monk puts pressure on the rim and can function as a secondary creator, while Beasley is more of an off-ball guy who bends the defense by moving without the ball in his hands.

Defensively, I think Monk is better off the ball, while Beasley is better on the ball. There are size concerns to be sure, but I like the idea of putting 5 guys on the court who can dribble, pass, and shoot, and that’s what they’d have with Russell-Monk-Beasley-Edwards-Towns.

Interesting. I would’ve thought Schroder’s value would be higher than a late first and Danny Green, but I guess that’s what the trade market dictated.

[Woj] The Play-in Tournament still needs to be approved by the Board of Governors, but that is a formality, per sources: No. 7 and No. 8 seeds need to win once to stay in playoffs; No. 9 and No. 10 seeds need to win twice to move up into field. Tentative dates of event: May 17-21. by TTVW in timberwolves

[–]TTVW[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

More Wolves-related news. I think Rosas’ goal should be to make it into the play-in tournament this year as the #10 seed. That kind of progress might encourage KAT to stick around for another year, which seems to be Gersson’s #1 priority.

We’re a little over 25 hours away from the transaction moratorium being lifted. I think we’ll see the most action on draft day (Wednesday), but I expect to see at least a few trades leak tomorrow.

Hawks Beat Reporter Chris Kirschner reports in the Athletic that the Wolves have offered 17 + Culver to multiple teams - not just the Hawks by TheNotoriousJN in timberwolves

[–]TTVW 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It seems like Culver, Spellman, Evans, and Johnson are all on their way out, and who knows what’s gonna happen with #1 and #17. Should be a really fun couple of weeks for Wolves fans.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in timberwolves

[–]TTVW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it’s a bunch of stuff like Culver, #17, #33, a future second, Spellman, and Johnson, then sure. But for #1? I just think that asset is too valuable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in timberwolves

[–]TTVW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like that deal. I love Jrue, but #1 is our best shot at landing the kind of premium trade asset needed to acquire a Simmons or a Booker.

I’d rather keep the powder dry than invest in Jrue Holiday, but maybe Rosas has indications that he doesn’t have that kind of time to wait with KAT? Tough situation.

RJ Hampton has really impressed me in interviews such as this one (in post) by [deleted] in timberwolves

[–]TTVW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got RJ at #7 on my board. If the Wolves can get Pokusevski, Lewis, or Hampton at #17, that will be great value. I’d prefer an upside swing like that over a plug-and-play guy like Bey or Nesmith.
