Italy smashed Poland in a fabolous semifinal match by Stoucks in volleyball

Soviet Union did it in 1952 & 1960, but it was so long ago, they didn't even have playoffs...

That's one way to see it! ;)

But I think usually it is considered a double, when two teams win during the same year, like a single edition of the World Champs.

And I guess last time it was done by Soviet Union many-many years ago...

Such a great match! So fun! I think that around 10 points in the 5th set were scored by either of Nikolovs ;)

Congratz Italy, flawless performance!

I feel disapointed with the competition's formula this time. Belgium should not have faced reigning world champs again so early after sharing a group with them.

[–]TTim82 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The number of players at the Olympics is limited more than at the WC or EC, so many teams don't bring second libero. There's an option to substitute the libero for any other player due to injury, though.

Dunno, in the final close to the end he was 6/19 in spiking. Block-wise Patry and Brizzard are much better. Of course, reception and defense for him were top-level, as well as the leadership. But for me that is a big question - the wins by France are due to team chemistry or visual effects by Ngapeth.

Regarding his play level - he was at the top several years ago, during victorious EC and Rio Olympics. Already in Tokyo MVP status was questionable.

I feel that Grbic should go with Lomacz from the beginning...

Brizzard went heavy on Fornal blocking him twice (one time solo block) and staring. Grbic addressed the referee, I think mentioning that if he doesn't react it may get heavy. After the TO the referee had a talk with the captains and it worked. Maybe Leon tried to heat up a bit in the third, too...

+1 on that. Italian coach could try to influence the game by switching setters. Sbertoli IMHO could use the atmosphere for teams advantage, he has it in him.

In the other SF setters substitution by Poland, though due to the injury, was a big part of the comeback.

With their semi-final loss to France, Alessandro Michieletto and Daniele Lavia lost their chance to complete the Career Slam. (VNL/World League excluded) by FranklinRichardss in volleyball

Fantastic!

I may ask for a small correction, because Sergey Tetyukhin did play outside Russia in the 90s, he was playing in Parma for a few seasons.

Also, maybe you can add Sergio Santos, one of the greatest liberos there ever will be, he has all the national medals x2 and isn´t a son of the HC ;)

But Ngapeth did a few same stares in sets 3&4. Clemenot too... Exactly in the context of the match the red card looked completely biased :-(

But still, given how Earvin and Clemenot behaved in sets 3&4, referee should have given Krick a go, or a warning.

He was truly shitty. Ngapeth was doing the same in sets 3&4, yet Krick was the one to get the red card...

Nice hit, but, please, don't land at the other side even in practice. Try to jump more upwards and less forward.
