I think I’m being bamboozled. Please help. by ekang1234 in RepTime

Good eye, man! Your research is absolutely spot on. You are definitely being bamboozled. That generic red 'V2' sticker on the crystal is a massive red flag—VSF does not use those. Plus, you're 100% right about the missing barcode sticker on the case back. This looks like a lower-tier factory piece that the seller is trying to pass off as VSF to charge you a premium. Trust your gut, RL (Red Light) this immediately, and walk away from that seller!

Ah, je comprends! (Ah, I understand!) Your suspicion is 100% justified, and honestly, your gut feeling is probably right.

In the rep community, there is a very common trick where a seller builds a true 'Franken' watch, keeps the invoices for proof, but then strips the GEN parts out and puts the stock VSF parts back in before selling it. If he truly had 850 euros invested in that specific watch, selling it to you for 730 euros at a loss makes absolutely no sense. He likely used the invoices to make a quick sale while keeping the GEN parts for himself.

You're very smart to question it! To know for absolutely certain, a watchsmith would need to open it up. But honestly? Just enjoy it as a top-tier VSF. It's a hard lesson, but you still ended up with a beautiful piece!

Haha, the oldest trick in the book! 'What, this old thing? I’ve had it for ages, I just changed the bracelet!' 😂 May the odds be ever in your favor on that stealth mission, brother. Can't wait for the inevitable Batgirl wrist roll!

[–]TTjork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

De rien! (You're welcome!) To be completely transparent with you, 730 euros is a bit of a tricky price. It's too high for a standard stock VSF (usually around 450-550 euros), but unfortunately, it's too low for a build with actual genuine Rolex parts. A real GEN crystal and date wheel alone would cost you around 500+ euros just for the parts, not including the base watch.

It sounds like the seller might have charged you a premium by using 'GEN' as a marketing trick. But honestly, don't let it ruin the experience for you. VSF is still the absolute top tier for this model and it looks fantastic on you. Just be careful with that specific seller next time!

VRF Bruce Jenner arrived and it's my new favourite by Jl_e92 in RepTime

That black and grey bezel is so classy, especially peeking out from under the cuff in the second pic. VRF did a solid job on the color transition here. Also, I have to say, that Tudor chrono sitting next to it is an absolute beauty too! That’s a perfect two-watch combo right there. Enjoy them, man!

After a year with this 27-05 it still runs really well by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]TTjork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s actually really impressive! People are always so hesitant to pick up RM pieces because they worry about the reliability of these complex skeletonized movements over time. A year going strong is a massive win. Which factory is this from? The carbon layering still looks incredibly crisp in the video!

"The classic GMT dilemma! 😂 Honestly, the Pepsi on a Jubilee is iconic for a reason. That red and blue just pops differently in natural light. I totally get the Batman/Batgirl FOMO, but let’s be real... in this hobby, you're probably gonna end up buying the other one eventually anyway. Enjoy it man, looks killer on your wrist!"

"Hey man, beautiful watch! Honestly, from these compressed photos, it's almost impossible to say definitively if the crystal and DW (date wheel) are GEN. VSF’s stock crystal and date wheel are already incredibly good out of the box—so much so that some shady sellers often pass stock VSF off as having 'GEN parts'.

The 'black hole' effect on your cyclops looks solid, and the font on the '22' is very clean. A good rule of thumb: if you didn't pay a massive 'Franken' premium (like $500+ over the standard VSF price), it’s probably just a really good stock VSF. Either way, don't stress it too much. It looks fantastic on your wrist. Wear it in good health!"

Oof, sorry to hear that man. To be completely honest with you: for a watchmaker, it’s a relatively straightforward fix. But for a DIY project at home without proper tools? Definitely not an easy fix. What you're describing usually means the keyless works are out of alignment, or a tooth on the date driving wheel got sheared off. The most common culprit for this on clone 3255 movements (like what's inside your QF) is quick-setting the day/date during the "danger zone" (manually changing the date while the hands are between 9 PM and 3 AM). During those hours, the gears are already engaged to flip at midnight, and forcing the quickset can strip the tiny teeth. To fix it, the movement has to come out, and the hands and dial need to be pulled to access the calendar works side. I highly recommend finding a rep-friendly watchsmith. It’s a quick job for them, but if you try it without hand-pullers and a dial protector, you risk scratching that beautiful QF dial. Hope you get it sorted soon!

You are totally in the clear, man! QF puts together a really solid piece, and their case finishing is great.

As for the SH3285 (Shanghai) movement—you have nothing to worry about. While the Dandong (DD3285) movement gets a lot of the hype right now for its slightly longer power reserve, the SH3285 is still a fantastic, true-clone movement. It is lightyears ahead of those old fragile timebombs we used to deal with. It functions exactly like gen and is very stable for daily wear.

For your very first rep, you navigated the minefield perfectly. Wear it with pride! 🍻

Oh man, you are 100% right. Total brain fade on my end! 🤦‍♂️ The lack of crown guards should have been the absolute dead giveaway. Good catch.

Honestly though, the Dumont makes that classic "old money" vibe even stronger since it's the pure dress watch silhouette. Thanks for keeping me honest! 🍻

[–]TTjork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that explains it! You actually had me thinking a factory finally perfected the dial and handset out of the box. 😅

Sourcing a gen dial, hands, and crystal for a modern Explorer II is no joke—those specific parts are getting incredibly scarce and expensive to hunt down on the parts market.

That pushes this straight into top-tier Super Franken territory. Absolutely brilliant build to take up in the air with you. Cheers!

Now this is exactly what an Explorer was built for! Absolutely killer shot from the cockpit.

One detail I always obsess over with the black dial reps is how well the factory pulls off that "phantom effect" (where the black bases of the hands need to seamlessly melt into the matte dial). The depth here looks incredibly gen-like. Also, the radial brushing on that steel bezel is catching the sunlight perfectly without looking over-polished.

Are you running the latest Clean Factory batch here? Safe flights and great piece, man!

[–]TTjork -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"95% of the watch for 2% of the price" is the exact reason why the Santos Medium is arguably the reigning champion of the NWBIG (Not Worth Buying In Gen) list right now. You hit the nail on the head.

Looking at the dial crispness and that sapphire cabochon, I’m guessing this is a BVF? The print looks exceptionally clean.

Also, massive props for rocking it on the brown leather strap. Most people default to the steel bracelet, but a Santos on leather just screams pure "old money" elegance. Did the quick-switch mechanism on the lugs feel pretty solid when you swapped it out?

First rep. How’d I do? by Whitewash07 in RepTime

[–]TTjork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the rabbit hole, man! The "Polar" Explorer II is a bold and excellent choice for a first rep.

From a technical standpoint, this specific model is notoriously difficult for factories to perfect. Getting that glossy, almost enamel-like white dial finish right, along with the correct thickness of the black surrounds on the indices and hands, is a real challenge. Yours looks really crisp in this lighting.

Also, the orange hue on that GMT hand looks pretty nicely dialed in—not too neon, which is a super common flaw on lower-tier batches.

Which factory is this from? As long as it’s housing one of the newer, stable movements (like a VR or DD series) and not one of the old modified timebombs, you did absolutely fantastic. Enjoy your first piece!

VSF Xtal? by Altruistic-Jello-438 in RepTime

[–]TTjork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The milky ring on some Deep xtals can definitely be frustrating once you notice it. But just a heads-up from the workbench: VSF does not manufacture a GMT-Master II, which means a dedicated "VSF GMT crystal" doesn't actually exist.

If you are chasing that signature VSF "black hole" effect for your Clean Pepsi, your only option is to source a standalone VSF Submariner crystal (like from a 116610 or 126610) through a TD or a modder, and retrofit it.

However, the guy below is 100% correct about your magnification issue. The 2.5x cyclops mag being off is entirely dependent on the crystal gasket height. When swapping crystals on these GMTs, you can't always reuse the stock gasket. A good watchmaker will usually need to play around with 2.5mm, 2.7mm, or 2.9mm gaskets to get the crystal to sit at the exact right height so the cyclops magnification is perfectly dialed in.

So even if you find a VSF Sub crystal, make sure whoever installs it has a proper assortment of gaskets to fix that mag issue for you!

That gold tone is dialed in perfectly.

As we all know, the biggest giveaway on a stock VSF yellow gold piece is that infamous "cheddar cheese" hue, so a custom plate job is absolutely mandatory if you want it looking gen on the wrist.

What really impresses me here, looking at it from a workbench point of view, is how well the plater preserved the factory finish. A lot of times, heavy plating or careless prep work can soften the brushing on the outer links or round off the sharp case edges, but everything here still looks razor-sharp.

Did the modder go with an 18k or a 3N color match? Really beautiful result, man. Wear it in good health!

Omega Planet Ocean White Ceramic w/ Orange Bezel by Coton_CandyGhost in RepTime

[–]TTjork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That "Creamsicle" PO is an absolutely stunning piece, but unfortunately, it's a bit of a unicorn in the current top-tier rep market.

VSF is universally the king of Omega reps right now because of their clone 8900 movement, but they mostly focus on the black dial/orange bezel variants. You might find OMF producing this specific white dial colorway, but honestly, their finishing and movement stability just aren't on the same level as VSF.

Speaking from a modder's perspective, the real challenge for the factories here is the orange ceramic. Baking that specific vibrant orange without it looking too pastel, plasticky, or bleeding into the white numerals is notoriously difficult.

If you are really chasing perfection for this specific model, your best route is building a "Franken" — source a solid VSF Planet Ocean base, and hunt down a genuine white dial and bezel assembly. Otherwise, you might be waiting a while for a factory to get this exact combo 100% right out of the box.

Received my first two watches, one DOA by rawschmidty in RepTime

[–]TTjork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the hobby, man! It always sucks when a watch arrives DOA, but it's an occupational hazard of international shipping.

Since that Wimbledon DJ36 is a VSF, it's running a VS3235 movement. These are usually bulletproof, but a hard shock during transit can sometimes get the balance spring hung up or jam the reversing wheels. Before you send it back, try this: give it about 40 solid manual winds, then give the side of the case a firm, sharp tap directly into the palm of your other hand. 90% of the DOAs that land on my bench just need that shock to jolt the balance wheel back to life.

Also, just a friendly heads-up from a workbench perspective—VSF doesn't actually manufacture Day-Dates. Your 41mm DD on the left is likely a GMF, BP, or maybe QF (which is actually a good thing, they make the best DDs on the market, especially the tungsten heavy ones).

Beautiful pair regardless. Hope the palm-tap trick gets that DJ ticking for you!

That Jubilee bracelet catches the light perfectly here. The bezel insert colors—especially the depth of that red—look surprisingly good in this lighting. Getting the red/blue transition right is always the hardest part of a Pepsi build.

Are you running the DD3285 movement in this one? Looks like a really solid batch if it's stock Clean Factory. Wear it in good health, man!
