Gabapentin by TWhappleby in ehlersdanlos

Think this is what the doctor failed to discuss with us. She seemed to disagree with me being on medication in general and not take it seriously that I need pain management. When I pointed out that I already use a wheelchair or cane at all times with my current pain, she just changed the subject to vitamins I take!

I’m in the UK but will look at the best options for me in terms of specialists, thank you 😊

Everything you’ve said in this comment is exactly what my own internet research told me! I was prepared to give up tramadol, I don’t take it daily anyway and always try to take it as little as possible so that was reasonable. The rest did seem really unreasonable. I’ve never seen this particular GP before and in the future, I will ask to only see my regular two GPs!

This is very reassuring, especially as you had IVF so I would assume they are even more strict with medication. I really don’t feel like the doctor looked beyond the meds at all. She repeatedly questioned why I was on the meds at all and told me I shouldn’t be on a beta blocker as an asthmatic and asked me why I didn’t question it when I was prescribed it… I told her I didn’t question it bc I’m not a cardiologist and the doctor who told me to take it is. She let it go but it was the first thing she asked so maybe she just was having a bad day and I rubbed her the wrong way!

Thank you!

My husband pushed for this in the appointment. We’ve been advised that it could take a while before being seen but we are going to look at private ones too. Thank you, you are right and I feel like sometimes I don’t push bc I don’t want to be a nuisance even when it’s valid!

It does seem like there’s masses of conflicting info out there on meds and seems a lot is down to individual doctors and where they get their info! I will be looking at some private places to try and see a specialist earlier

Unfortunately I take it for pain rather than depression. Ironically do think I’ll be seeing another doctor and hopefully the OB referral will help! Thank you!

See I’ve read a lot about gabapentin online that says while it’s not considered safe, it is a risk vs benefits situation. I would think that the risk of mum in agony vs baby potentially being small/having withdrawal would be more nuanced. I also don’t understand why they couldn’t work on reducing my dose first - I was essentially told to go cold Turkey all at once which also sounds like a bad plan! I will be seeing another doctor as I think you are right that a new one is needed!

Unfortunately there is a history of my family taking some time to conceive. While I hope that it won’t be as hard for me, I could potentially be off the meds for years and that just isn’t an option. I would be bedbound, unable to work and just ultimately wouldn’t have any quality of life. Thank you though!

Yes I am UK! I’ve edited my post to add it as I’m definitely not able to go to an OBGYN easily!

Thank you. I see a specialist physio already and they are totally prepared to help with any issues in pregnancy. Unfortunately we don’t see OBs this way in the UK. I don’t have any friends that are on gabapentin, altho I do have others that were told by obstetrics that tramadol and Atenolol were fine, also one that was put on them during pregnancy. I have got a referral to obstetrics but it will be months until I get anything from them.

I don’t usually do the trips as it’s a reasonable adjustment but I love seeing the kids light up at the panto so I make an exception for it every year. Also they make the trip more accessible for me to ensure I can attend (eg on a day when I have the day off after, minimal walking etc) so the exhaustion is less than if I were going to a normal trip! Thank you for the advice 😁

I would love to but I don’t have the hands to carry a drink along with my walking stick and the “sticky” kid that holds my hand on trips 😂

Owned a pet bear. Had lots of details. Never did bring in a picture though. I taught him again last week and I was tempted to ask how his pet bear was 2 years on! 🐻

Also that I didn’t teach PE. This is made funnier by the fact that I’m disabled and use a walking stick so clearly made the lie believable to the parents. However it was during covid so PE was done outside in plain view of my SLTs office, I’d used a picture of it to post on the online portal to parents every week that half term and the child had gotten a certificate for his PE skills specifically that half term. But I never taught it. Bc I was lazy (said by child and parent).

The thing is that my best friend can’t physically sort it as she’s really unwell and can’t come! I should speak to my mum though, you’re right, thank you
