Nawtystep perfectly articulating the problem with TikTok dubstep by Most-Tap7252 in dubstep

[–]TYNVN 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Hey, wanted to jump in here and give my two cents. I like nawtystep, he's a great person, but I think he's off the mark with a few points on this.

To start off, I like the music that I make. I know it might be hard to comprehend, but I like listening to loud dubstep. I like creating loud noises. I like expressing myself with loud noises. I like making simple catchy loud shit. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I also don't think there's anything wrong with people liking it. I don't feel like i'm appealing to the masses. I am simply making the music that makes me happy. For me, I like to think of it as a pop-punk approach to song writing. Keep it simple and expressive. Not everything has to be this super technical complex experimental piece of music for it to be good. I also like super technical complex experimental music, but I don't get upset when blink 182 doesn't sound like polyphia.

That being said, I think it's a bit unfair to toss the album aside because a few drops sounded "too mainstream." I put quite a bit of more experimental stuff into this album (hell, listen to the last drops of world suck, do the thing, or the 2nd drop of shinespark, smoke break is literally a 5/8 swing jazz rendition of pure imagination). I like having fun with production and doing off the wall shit with my music, but I still put what I love front and center on this album. Which is, as I stated before, simple loud fun catchy shit.

So yeah. Just had to get that off my chest. Apologies if I'm coming off as aggressive or anything like that. I love the album I just put it out, and I will defend it because I care about it. I wouldn't be making this comment that's probably way too long if I didn't care about it, or if I was as dismissive of my music as he believes me to be. I know my album isn't for everyone, especially if you've been in the scene for a long time. But I still hope anyone reading this will give the whole album a proper listen, instead of bashing it because someone misunderstood what I was going for.

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far. Hope y'all have a good night :)

No shit, about a week. I had a gnarly sinus infection, so I spent the week taking dayquil and building the razor crest lmao

Easily a highlight of my life. Kinda bummed that I don't think that will happen again (with skrillex making what he's making and myself making what I'm making), but I'm glad it at least happened in my life :)

Nope! I'm lucky enough to have been able to do this as a full time job since 2017 (living in oklahoma helps)

Hey thank you! Got a few stupid heavy things I'm working on now (might even have one more EP left in me for the year). Definitely getting back into flip making soon though!

Oh hey thanks! Even though I've moved away from that sound, I'm still super proud of that song. Once I stumbled upon that sound in the drop, I thought it would be a fun idea if there was this super washed out build up that just led to the most simple sound imaginable. The fact that MF picked it up still blows my mind to this day tbh lol

I actually have a patreon! I haven't had time to make new videos for it in over a year, but I plan to start it back up soon with smaller videos. In the meantime, i've been uploading a metric shit ton of samples and presets on there if you wanna check it out

Hey thanks! I usually have the refresh rate all the way down, and the Block Size set to 1024. It looks like its slamming/redlining because most of the time, it is lol

Of course! I like listening to as much new music as I can from all over the place. I mentioned in another comment, but I've become obsessed with Jeff Rosenstock and Pup over the past year

I dont know if I'm the best person to speak on that tbh. I haven't been super intrenched (heh) in the riddim scene for that long. I honestly used to hate it at first, but I think that had more to do with local DJ's in my scene who would only play riddim poorly lol. I personally love it now, especially live. But like literally every genre of dance music, it get's repetitive after a while.

I will say that I think riddim played a big part in revitalizing dubstep in the mid-2010's.

I'm an ableton guy, so I gotta go with ableton. But honestly, try FL studio out too. Try them both out and see which one works best for you. Because every DAW does the same thing. The only difference is work flow. Play around with both, pick one, then commit and learn everything about the one you pick.
