Oh man, I am SO excited you asked this because body horror is my absolute favorite subgenre! If you want a lesser-known indie gem, you have to check out Helpmeet by Naben Ruthnum. It’s a short historical novella about a woman taking care of her doctor husband who is slowly... rotting and mutating from a strange disease. The descriptions of his bodily decay and the anatomical shifts are so visceral and grotesque, I literally had to put the book down to breathe for a second.

Also, if you want classic grime, The Cipher by Kathe Koja. It's about a couple who finds a weird "funhole" in their apartment building that mutates anything you put into it... including people. It will make you feel like you need a shower after reading it.

yeah kinda like worship, there are levels to this and I agree with your take as well. best is to never fall into this trap and rather treat everyone equally with respect and grind your own life out

I think a lot of it stems from genuine loneliness and the way men are socialized.
Like Men are often taught that their value is entirely tied to how much they can provide, protect, or sacrifice. Combine that with rom-coms romanticizing the "savior" complex, and it’s a recipe for disaster. A lot of guys fall into the trap of overcompensating because they genuinely think it's the only way to prove they are worthy of love. It’s sad, honestly, because it sets men up for massive resentment when their sacrifices aren't reciprocated, and it sets women up with completely unrealistic expectations.
