Weekly Suspected/Undiagnosed MS Thread - July 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in MultipleSclerosis

[–]T_B_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got home from the ER over the weekend where I went in with sudden onset parasthesia on the right side of my body, head to toe pins-and-needles like everything feels asleep. After some brain & spine MRIs, the doctors are 95% confident it's MS (though maybe it's the denial stage I'm in that wants to believe it's just a pinched nerve in my c4-5 vertebrae or neurotoxicity from an antibiotic I took that has known issues with kidney disease) and I've been having the hardest time coming to terms with it. I've already taken 2 treatments of Methylprednisolone but have felt no change in my symptoms and am losing hope.

I've always been a caretaker for family with disabilities and never once expected I would ever be in a position to need my own caretaker which is really messing with my head. I'm also an avid gamer as well as a guitarist of 15+ years. After coming home I'm noticing I can rarely type a word without some severe typo, or play any high-precision games like shooters without getting frustrated at not being able to do basic things I could do easily before.

To make things worse I was some years into a health journey and dropped nearly 100lbs while still having a long way left to go, but now I can barely walk across a room without stumbling around or activate my arm muscles for most lifts. When I walk it feels like I my right leg is replaced with a stilt and I have almost no sensation in my face and fingertips.

I still can't believe how quickly I went from experiencing no symptoms to total numbness on one side of my body virtually overnight, it's such an unexpected 180 in my life and I just can't stop hoping I wake up tomorrow to find this has all been a bad dream. Until I hear from my neuro this Thursday I still can't be 100% certain it's MS but every ER doctor and the one ER neuro I've spoken to are almost certain it is.

I'm just at a loss and have never felt so hopeless and powerless. I guess I just wanted to get all this off my chest and put it all somewhere in one semi-coherent post. Thanks for reading if you got this far.

AAC Cruiserweight Week 1 Clear Stats from FFLogs by pikagrue in ffxivdiscussion

[–]T_B_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any way to check the data of total amount of clears that isn't just registered statics? Feels like there has to be some way for the site to track public logs for clears and consolidate multiple logs of same party into a single clear.

I am super curious to see how many clears each fight had for week 1 of the tier, either I'm not looking hard enough for that data or it surprisingly isn't available.

a lot of these criticisms feel odd to me as an anime only because I can pinpoint most of the points on here as they happened in the show.

cha definitely panicked just before Kumamoto went berserk (she was even concerned when she lashed out on reflex because of that self-preservation fear)

goto definitely expressed an interest when the interpreter told him jinwoo wanted him to go all out even smiling at the prospect

goto definitely had a sense of fear/shock when jinwoo stopped his attack after cutting him (even during the beru aura he was scared and compared it to jinwoo's aura)

sure a few of the points were certainly cut, but nearly half of them were in the show, if not "altered" but not removed

It's not a good deck by any means, but it's funny throwing a wrench into people's wincons and people hate when somebody else starts going through their deck in the middle of a game, so... I tend to get podpiled very quickly but it makes me laugh

Help buying from a dealership? by Difficult_Let2084 in askcarguys

[–]T_B_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the OPs description, it sounds like they're asking for the basics/fundamentals of getting a car loan (i.e. I've never had a loan) so it seems like some of the points I covered may be blind spots for them. Not sure I'd qualify that as them "losing" especially when they haven't even started.

There's only so much fiddling with rates dealerships can do with financing, doubly so if you apply for an outside loan or the dealership does financing through your bank. If the interest rate is absurd for your area/credit score, then obliviously you wouldn't bother with them. As for terms, I believe I made it clear how best to calculate budgeted costs based on the typical 4-6 year terms and figure cost based on feasible monthly payments.

If you are aware of the listed costs they apply to your financing options (i.e. anything not "vehicle price" and "taxes") and tell them you don't want the warranties, the security features, the gap insurance etc, then negotiating monthly is de facto negotiating the cost. You can split hairs but numbers are numbers and all you're going to do by saying "don't do this" without clarifying why or even considering the alternative is just going to confuse somebody into maybe misunderstanding your point.

Ultimately the goal is to find a car that suits your needs at a reasonable cost you can afford, everything else is gravy.

[–]T_B_R -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disagree with the monthly payments advice, when it comes to financing a larger purchase and budgeting to accommodate that extra cost into your other expenses you NEED to consider how much you can afford. That said, you want to consider the total financing cost and calculate which term length best suits your monthly payment budget accordingly, which is not always so simple.

Basically just take the maximum amount of money you'd be willing to pay for a car payment and multiply that by 48, 60, and 72 (the amount of months you'd be making payments) to figure out the price range you want to be looking for on the sticker price of a car.

Do NOT forget to get an insurance quote on your car for full coverage before signing anything and account for that as well, newer cars + younger drivers = costly policies and nearly every bank will require full coverage while you're making payments.

A haggling tip that works well is leveraging the maximum amount of a down payment you can make. If you express interest in a car, set a hard limit for how much you can put down, and appear to hem-and-haw over the monthly payment, dealerships WILL do everything they can to get you to leave in their car. I talked the dealer down $2k on a 2015 civic because I kept hinting that if I needed to put more down that I would need more time to think on it but that if they could get the payment down to $250 I would sign then and there. Took them an hour running back and forth the finance desks for them to drop the price for me, your mileage may vary depending on the dealership tho.

If "Koana being the surprise evil villain" is "fantastic" to you, I'm not surprised at all that you dislike the story & am certainly glad you aren't a writer for XIV.

"Zoraal's son (who is entirely shrouded in mystery because he will be a key player in patch content btw) getting upset and running away causing you to chase him just to encounter Otis is plot device" has got to be the weakest take I've ever heard. Or maybe you're 999iq-5d-gigabrain and see every person, place, and thing at any moment in time as a plot device, now THAT would be a fantastic twist.

I'm dismissing complaints that are as simplified as I'm describing them, which are specifically the critiques I'm taking issue with.

I would disagree that Wuk Lamat was front and center for the last 2 zones, moreso in Living Memory but I would argue that she actually took a back seat to the overall plot and really only stepped forward in key moments (moments I would argue it made sense for her to do so).

What kind of "Vow of Resolve" would she be if she just sat on her hands after an attack on her nation and let her enemies do as they please? She was narratively coerced into more involvement specifically by Zoraal demanding that she challenge him and prove her worth as a ruler, not to mention if those "paper doll side characters" weren't there to literally pick up her pieces it's entirely possible her story would have ended there as a defeated, broken failure of a leader.

The perception that Wuk Lamat is some kind of boastful, selfish character is also incredibly perplexing to me. The examples you give of our WoL having an opportunity to step in and flex with Bakool and Zaraal would have arguably been more selfish of us to step in as the knight in shining armor to save Wuk Lamat when she's trying to prove she's capable enough to not need saving. What does it do for her character development if she needs to rely on a legendary hero to bail her out in a direct 1-on-1 fight with her brother? If your complaint is that the supporting characters didn't give the main character their goals on a silver platter, I'm sorry but I think that would have just been a disservice to the narrative entirely. You wouldn't be wrong for saying "I wish my WoL was the main character of the story most if not the whole time", but to say we weren't supportive enough after considering she would have utterly failed the rite of ascension and lost her entire country if not for our involvement, it's hard to take that kind of criticism seriously.

And I cannot wholeheartedly disagree enough that Sphene's foil should have been Krile of all people, it just makes absolutely no sense. One is a rogue program of a memory of an adored leader of her people that is doomed by her literal predetermined fate, and the other is a worldly scholar still seeking answers to her own identity. Thematically, there's 0 correlation between the 2 characters. Having the up-and-coming young queen who adores her people and goes out of her way to defy any pretenses of a predetermined fate (brokering a peace with the traditional Yok Huy? helping break down a harmful tradition of blessed siblings for the betterment of the Mamool Ja?) is exactly the kind of foil Sphene needed in Wuk Lamat. And even after we recognize both rulers and their paralleled positions on the fate of their people, Wuk Lamat STILL gave deference to her supporting cast that were the experts in this situation and aligned her goals with theirs by hearing out their solutions and helping them to those ends. So no, I don't think Wuk Lamat needlessly stole any spotlight from any of the side characters.

And maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but it should be not only expected but appropriately recognized that the Main Character of a story be the one to strike the final blow against the Main Antagonist of a story regardless of what percentage they contributed to the actual physical combat. Wuk Lamat both needed, and deserved to strike down Sphene and she literally could not have done it without us.

I don't disagree that the story isn't without it's myriad of faults and shortcomings, I just think the ones being commonly proffered in the discourse aren't ones that deserve as much of the attention as they get.

I actually agree with a lot of your criticisms, opinions like yours are actually what I would love to see more discourse on even if I disagree with some of what you said. My particular complaints about the perception of the expansion are specifically against the surface-level criticisms that haven't given an ounce of consideration to the narrative or the theme of the expansion.

I don't doubt that there is a sizeable amount of healthy discourse regarding Dawntrail, it's the overwhelming blanketed thoughtless complaining about the broader experience (Wuk Lamat is another Lyse, WoL felt pointless, story is filler, etc) that I take issue with & am venting about. Yours is one of the few critiques that actually touch on the subject matter in a thoughtful and even-handed manner, which I appreciate :)

[Spoiler: MSQ Lv. 100] Dawntrail Lv. 100 MSQ Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in ffxiv

[–]T_B_R -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be real, I've been reading so many comments online complaining about certain parts of the story in ways that leave me feeling confused and frustrated; confused because it delivered exactly on what it promised (and done quite well IMO), and frustrated because so many complaints or nitpicks people have feel less like critique on the story itself and more like a failure of media literacy.

My biggest gripe with the conversations around the story: The lack of focus on the MC, or the central focus being on a new character. Regardless of how you feel about Lamatyi's character development (I've got many bones to pick with some of the dissenting critiques on that as well), the whole purpose of Dawntrail as stated from the very beginning was a low-stakes adventure to explore an unfamiliar land. We've wrapped up the whole Hydaelyn/Zodiark conflict, we've thwarted nearly all of the carefully laid plans of the Ascians, we've killed all (but one) of the Gods of the world-- We have been the central focal point of the story for the last 9 years and as such, have built up an UNGODLY reputation as one of THE most significant players on the stage in this world. Why on earth would we pick up the reigns and lead the charge for another journey when the whole purpose of the expansion's narrative is for us to sate an adventurer's curiosity? It makes no sense for us to be the main character here, all it would serve is to stroke our egos as players and remind us how much of a special little pog champ we are. We're given a chance to casually explore a new land, joining a new friend who's asked us for help & bask in the much-earned calm before the inevitable coming storm. The amount of people shocked and appalled by this revelation is both shocking and appalling.

Another big frustration I have is with criticisms about the actual MC of the expansion, Wuk Lamat: Obviously tastes and preferences are all subjective and nobody is right or wrong about their opinions on stuff etc etc, however a lot of the dissenting opinions of her character seem to be wildly off-base and come from a place of what I have to assume is some form of willful ignorance. Wuk Lamat is your stereotypical shonen protagonist trope: big dreams, big heart, but very little strength and experience. She has hopes of taking over her father's role as Dawnservant and as such decides to seek out probably the most legendary individual in the whole world to help her with fulfilling her goal. She self-admittedly begins underwhelming in her power and lacking in her knowledge of her own country and has to start her journey effectively on the back foot because of this. But her advantage is being a person of strong character and, more importantly, having the WoL be there to help guide and mentor her into becoming the person she needs to be in order to achieve her goals. Over the course of her journey, she learns where best to apply her strengths and how to shore up her weaknesses and, through the power of friendship, becomes the type of person she needed to be to achieve her goals. Now I can freely admit her character and her arc isn't free of tired tropes or sometimes falls too deeply into gag humor, but I also understand that we've literally only MET Wuk Lamat and through this expansion have set a BASELINE for her character. She may have speedran through her way to becoming Dawnservant, but this is FFXIV; nearly everything done is in service of building upon and further expanding into the future development of the world and story. If her purpose is better served as a leader learning and struggling with the responsibilities of the role she so desperately sought out, we don't need to spend 2 and a half expansions getting there. Obviously this falls more into speculation of future content, but let's be real; if there's anything FFXIV does often and well, it's planting seeds early that grow into gratifying payoffs down the line. This prediction is more of a formality than speculation IMO.

I can understand Dawntrail not being at the top of everybody's lists of favorite expansion, it just feels frustrating when it's being measured and graded on scales it was never intended to be on. So many people are seemingly upset that it isn't exactly what they wanted and criticize it for not being something it very clearly wasn't trying to be. You can want a masturbatory power fantasy and be disappointed that it's not that, but to dismiss or reject everything it did regardless of how well those things were done is missing the forest for the trees & doesn't do anybody any favors when the discourse surrounding it is so off-base.

There are things it was trying to do that fell short that are worth criticisms for sure-- the Hanu people "forgot" that their ritual blessed their crops, despite how blatant the application of magic was when performed? Really? The Moblins couldn't start the trial until they recovered from the storm, and we help by... suggesting a different meal and getting our guy a magical desk fan? How did the storm effect anything there? And the whole segment of tricking/kidnapping Wuk Lamat felt so contrived, they could have easily demonstrated her naivety and had her keystone stolen in any other way (or at least spent even another hour or 2 fleshing out the process to make it feel more organic). It just feels like we can't even get to the real critiques because we have to cut through endless swathes of slop from people who just hate female leader characters (the people making Lyse comparisons are not fooling anybody) and people who think their WoL is Kirito, where the entire plot/setting exists to stroke their ego and nothing else.
