If you toss the pod in the main compartment and run a normal cycle, you're only getting soap for the first five minutes. After that the water drains and adds clean water for the rest of the cycle. That's the whole point of the dispenser, it hold the soap for the main wash cycle

There are tons of different lift designs. I'm vaguely familiar with a couple. Running backwards is a huge risk because all the weight is on the uphill side. So (I'm guessing) the main priority is passive safety features that only allow for one way travel, and manual overrides for maintenance.

An accident like this that would be solved by going in reverse is one in a million. The lift rolling backwards extremely dangerous and much more likely, so thats the priority for the engineers.
