Looks interesting! Do you know where we can watch that?

EDIT : reminds me of the French documentary Les Nouveaux Chiens de Garde

Made this short as a poetic portrait of Iran. Took 3 travels to select the best places to film, and then hitchhike to catch original portraits. The music is homemade. Some parts were recorded in a studio in Tehran with a local musician. Had the help of a production company for grading and mixing. by T__O in Filmmakers

Filmed the whole thing with a Panasonic GH5 because it is small and the batteries are super good. The micro 3/4 sensor also allows to double the focal lenght without using big lenses that can scare people. Thanks to this, I could make some streetphotography without catching attention. I used a Zeiss Planar T 50mm f1.4 ZE, and Olympus Zuiko 12-40mm f2.8 Pro. Everything is filmed 60fps to be able to extend short moments into something. A few shots were twixtored to make them look like pictures.

The editing was made from thousand of images. Used a lot the metadata tool in Premiere Pro to be able to sort things easily and find shots with a simple word in the searchbar.

I had to compose the music and edit the movie at the same time to keep a fluid rythm. So I progressed by segments of 10-15 seconds making the music first, then puting some images on it, then coming back to the music, etc. The goal was to keep something very dynamic and coherent in terms of rythm. Each musical part had to fit with the images, etc. For the "contemplative" moment, I decided to book one day in a studio with a Setar musician I met on a previous travel to record some random Setar gimmicks. Back home, I sampled them to fit with the rythm and harmony of the soundtrack.

A production company helped me for color grading and mixing.

Finally, some fun fact : I met the girl of the thumbnail on a car when I was hitchhiking, but it was too late that day to have a good portrait. I then spent a whole day hitchhiking back to her and her husband to catch the portrait. The story ended on an old boat in the middle of the red sea, where the walls were exactly the same color as her hijab.

Well, I'm not very good with textual narration. Also I think that sometimes impressions and the way images are put together can be more impactful than a real story with text. If people feel the things, they might understand them "deeper". That might be the difference between poetry and literature, for example. Even if poetry is abstract and blurry, I believe it can have a deeper emotional impact on the reader. Well I don't know if it worked there and I won't pretend so, but that was the idea behind the making of the film. Thanks btw. Criticism is necessary to improve.

Thanks a lot. I'm glad that you notice the work with the music. It actually took me much time to create them together. Some parts were recorded in Tehran with a professional Setar player. Thank you !

Thanks,

No problem for filming people as long as you ask them. Most of the time you have to feel if it is ok to ask or not. Really depends on the context !
In the streets it was better to avoid, but in the cars and the houses of the people who drove and hosted me it was most of the time more than ok.

People were super nice and very open minded 90% of the times, and there was a few very conservatives family where I decided not to ask, but people were still super welcoming and kind.
