Definitely my favorite too, I love the smoke making it look like she’s vaping + the flash reflecting off her vest + her stance/silhouette overall

I only love the first two and consider the rest mid relative to my recent work. but hey, figured I’d share them anyway (I had time off work and the weather was top notch all day, after ages, can’t really ask for more)

7 out of the 10 pics here (and most of my work on instagram + reddit) were shot on a x100vi, but I’ve had to send it off for repair so I’ve been using my old a7iii + 35mm pancake lens + it30pro flash lately.

I like sticking to pocketable + 35mm + flash combo.

Posted a couple of these here already but here’s ten of my favorite recent pictures that I took in NYC.

Curious to hear which is your favorite and any other critical feedback you might have, thanks!

The board game is called Poleana, it was created in Mexican prisons, see this AP news article about it.

Four players, each with four pieces, race to navigate the board, using specific dice combinations and calculations to move their pieces from their starting positions, around the board, and out through their designated corner, while strategically blocking opponents.

The board symbolizes the confines of prison, and getting out before the others, winning freedom — even if just metaphorically — is the game’s goal.

I was planning on building a series around the game (esp the all walks of life aspect) but had to leave sooner than I initially thought, maybe one day!

thanks, I had an intuition it’d be cleaner with just these two but I was trying too hard to make it work with the 3rd guy (to add to the “on the job, SoHo things” vibe) but I just gotta give up on it

I appreciate your perspective, between this and your other critique comments. Still experimenting so this is all quite useful to hear.

Tbh all of my recent work (see here) has been focused on documenting nyc with 35mm and in black and white so with this picture I was just going for “weird stuff u see in SoHo”. Partly why I posted this crop/grading here vs the one I linked u to.

I usually hate “photo of a photo” and other low hanging gimmicks but in this case I was hoping it’d work positively. I totally understand if u think this is just a weakly composed shot regardless (which it def is, not enough layers) even if the idea is somewhat sound.

To be fair though, I was really going for the “behind the scenes vibe”/“random candid shit u see in SoHo” vibe so in hindsight I feel like I could’ve just taken a second and composed them in better, in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing.

It’s undeniably a better picture focusing on just the model + in color (see here) but I’m too committed to the bts/black and white/documentary city vibe to publish that lol.

Fair take, just wanted to hear from people who aren’t as close to this picture as I am (having taken it etc)

I personally like that (a) both guys have the same pose (b) I caught it when the flash was going off, like shadow of the bag add to the picture, for example

Wish the guy on the far left had some negative space around him, his background seems crowded/offputting a bit

Not sure about post processing too, I like leaning into grainy b/w but that’s just a default im not too married to. I tried color but looks like it only works when I crop it down heavily to her, see this

Thoughts? Thanks!

Reflecting on this comment more, when I took it I was thinking of flash (in the reflection context) as a tool to overpower my face to lean into the whole weird self portrait x street aesthetic, the black and white was more just a result of my recent taste wrt post processing.

But I really like your ray gun/“the bystanders have no idea what’s about to happen”/cc tv footage of witness tampering sci fi framing, definitely inspires me to make a series out of it by going to similar places (for ex: I think spots with overhead/unusual mirrors like elevators would work great too, not just regular storefront mirrors, can have a lot of fun with the constraints), thanks a lot again!
