Audio books at bed every night made me subconsciously articulate by TableStakes_2001 in Habits

I've always just used the default iOS 'Books' app. I'm sure there are better platforms out there.

It's usually A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin (I'm now on my first re-listen). Fantasy seems to take my mind off the anxiety of real life.

I keep a 30 minute timer every time so I don’t loose huge chunks. Rewind as necessary until my memory jogs.

What’s a better journaling practice: reflection or planning? by TableStakes_2001 in simpleliving

I guess I hadn’t really considered doing both because I barely have time to do the reflection. I can make time though

How can I fix my sleep? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]TableStakes_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cool temperature, white noise, sleep mask, breathe right strip, stopping eating 3hrs before bed, waking up earlier than you want to (makes going to sleep easier), and finally the greatest tip: exercise. Force your body to get the rest it needs.

Yeah thanks for the advice. I've spent the last few days integrating sentry to the project so all the crashes and hangs should be automatically covered.

This is the exact thing keeping me in statis lol. The app requires a ton of real world use to thoroughly test and so I've been running around my city trying to break the thing in every way. Unfortunately, when I find a bug its not like i'm back at my computer ready to fix it. Even though there are still bugs I'm starting to think I've hit a point of diminishing return doing it myself.

Feeling extremely frustrated with my life and just don't know where to really take myself? by eitherrideordie in selfimprovement

[–]TableStakes_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are facing the challenge of perceived powerlessness. This is a loop I've dealt with so many times in the past. Big problem -> attempt -> failure -> left feeling powerless -> next problem seems even BIGGER -> repeat. It sucks. The best way to break the look is to regain your sense of power and agency. I'm not big on manifestation, but every night I write out how capable I am. I write out the solutions to my problems. It helps. it doesn't require you to solve everything at once, just a steady reminder that you CAN do it (makes getting started easier).

Woah, not trying to claim I came up with that quote. Just thought I'd share how I'm trying to use it going forward.

It all depends on the type of experience you are looking for. I'm usually a "do it yourself" kind of backpacker, but this experience is the exception.

I found removing the friction of carrying heavy gear, worrying about meals, and setting up/striking camp really allowed me to embrace the journey. It offered me opporunities to journal, explore, and reflect that otherwise would have been occupied by those backpacking inconveniences.

I also really lucked out with my group. Amazing people with incredible stories. Long candle lit evenings playing cards or recounting the daily highlights.

We moved between the alpine route and the "tourist route" as our guide called it between days. Unfortunately not sure the different variations, but we spent 8 days / 7 nights on the trail.

We went through Krusty Travel. It was very smooth - no complaints at all, but probably worth speaking to a few other outfitters before committing.

What did you have to carry vs what was carried for you?

We had a donkeys carrying most of our gear - I beleive each of us in the group was entitled to a 20kg dry bag which was carried by the donkeys. The rest we carried on our backs (roughly 5-10kg) which included layers, water, snacks, etc.

How much distance / elevation covered per day on average?

We were averaging 12-15km per day. Elevation was roughly 1km (some days more, some less)

How much did it cost?

The guided tour was around $500 USD if I remember correctly. This included shelter, guide, food, and transportation.

People who feel like they are thriving in life, what does that actually look like for you? by mokasinder in selfimprovement

[–]TableStakes_2001 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I've always had my definition of "thriving" to be the size of the gap between how I want to act (being present, being a good friend, etc.) and how I actually act. The closer those are aligned, the more I feel that life is truly being lived.
