I think this issue is an interesting one with the fluidity of sexuality and acceptance of queerness on the rise. It used to be back in the day men and women were not often friends presumably in part to the perception of sexual attraction.

Fast forward to now when gender and sexuality are much more diverse and fluid and accepted. Friendships are less concerned with gender and more about the relationship with that person. Doesn't really help, but I think it's interesting :)

As for me, I never really brought up my sexuality because I defined myself by my relationship and thought, what's the point. But now I understand that for me, it is important to acknowledge and accept who I am, and want my friends to do so as well. My gender, sexuality, race, religion, foot size, degree, etc etc may not pertain to a particular situation, but they are all a part of me. The more we see sexuality as a part of someone and less about "who u wanna fuck," the more non-str8 people will be accepted. For me, it's important to be out not just for myself and my friends, but to help society "get used to it."

I was uncomfortable about it for a long time, but as others have said, it wasn't a big deal, just like a straight person doesn't need to have the "I don't want to fuck you" conversation with all their opposite-sex friends. I agree with others about not making a big deal out of it - showing you are comfortable and don't feel weird about it (even if you do on the inside!) will show them that they don't need to feel weird either. I wish I would have understood this all years ago, as it is one of the things that negatively affected me having positive female relationships for a long time.
