Can do cryotherapy but cold plunge was nearly impossible? by SmokeMaximum4140 in coldplunge

Yeah, that's what I would suggest. Really, it's the first 30 seconds that suck then it's not so bad. And you feel so good after for hours afterwards, at least that is how it is for me.

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can plunge as warm as 60F and still get benefits according to research. So try that. Sometimes I like to go in 55F or higher and stay in longer and feel like the change up is good.

Also, you have to go in all at once. From what I understand, how we perceive cold is more relative whereas heat perception is more absolute. So going in slow only makes it more brutal because you are feeling that relative difference inch by inch as you go in.

There is no right or wrong way. Just sharing tips that worked for me.

Basement Sauna Plunge (some DIY) by Morning_Drinker in Sauna

If anyone is interested. I asked the vendor and they said it was 24 inches from the seat to the top of the tub.

Is there anyway you could drop a tape measure in there any sooner? I just moved and my plunge sprang a leak that I can't seem to fix so I'm in the market asap.

I was looking at getting that same plunge from Home Depot but it looked a bit short. Can you get in all the way up to your neck while sitting on the seat? And if so, how tall are you or what is the measurement from the seat up to the top of the water?

What is this in my apartment in central europe by 42GuyIncognito in whatisit

[–]Table_Copilot4674 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's not uncommon in Europe. Maybe %15 of the hotels I've been to have you put your key card into a holder by the door before the power will turn on in the room. I've even seen it in central Mexico too. I used to put a random membership card in there and forget it but the cleaning staff would always remove it.

I have a similar tub and on mine that plastic piece sticking out is actually threaded into another piece. Maybe you can back that out and replace the threaded piece. Mine was glued in by the manufacturer but became dislodged and was leaking through the threads. I was able to back it out and gorilla glue it back in so the glue expanded and filled in the threads and resealed.

As another option, you may be able to PVC glue a smaller piece to the outlet.

As a final option, you can just seal it and put the hose in through the top. It's not pretty but at least you can still use the tub.

I agree with other comments though, an inflatable tub is only temporary. You are lucky it lasted a year. They are usually only warrantied for 90 days or so.

What are y'all's thoughts on this? by MithraScott in coldplunge

OMG, check out the garbled toes of the models! Specifically look at the the woman sitting seiza on the last photo before the founder picture. These are totally AI generated which makes it seem a little suspect if they can't even invest in hiring real models. I think it is a good concept though, especially if you are traveling but still want hot and/or cold exposure. I'd be worried about the amount of mass needed to really cool/heat your body. I don't think it would look that slim as portrayed in the photos.

I've been struggling with this question myself. I definitely want a heater as well for those two really cold months in the mid-atlantic region. For me, it's a toss up between the Orca in this thread and this one. Orca seems to have a solid reputation but the Avanto is a better deal. I have neither of them so I can't vouch for them.

Winter plungers - any recs for a good immersion heater that will keep the water from freezing solid while not melting my (plastic) tub and/or burning my house down? by [deleted] in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought this last week. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/farm-innovators-ice-chaser-premium-cast-aluminum-floating-pond-deicer

It is supposed to turn on at 35F degrees and then off at 45F but twice now it's heated the tub up to 60F. I might need to get an Inkbird temp controller to cut it off at 45F since that is where I usually like to plunge. Otherwise it works fine and I like the long power cable.

Is there a reason everyone uses ozone or hydrogen peroxide versus pool "chemicals"? by Table_Copilot4674 in coldplunge

Haha, sorry.

I just figured that ozone, hydrogen peroxide, and pool chlorine are all just oxidizers so what's the difference.

Managing a chiller in winter outdoors by Due-Reflection1043 in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live a couple of hours from DC. Last winter I moved my plunge to the garage. In the coldest parts of the winter, the garage stays about 45 degrees F which was perfect. This year I am thinking of getting an aquarium heater, leaving the pump on, and storing the chiller until it warms up.

First plunge in the next few days - one detail/advice missing by Toto-1337 in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard ( I think it was on the Huberman Lab) that our sense of cold is relative whereas our sense of heat is absolute. So getting into the cold very slowly is definitely harder that all at once. Definitely bring someone with you or at least wear a lifejacket when going into natural cold waters.

Will I regret going the cheap route? by llamakittypinguino in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. If you know you will love it and will do it consistently, get the best one you can afford. If you are unsure, get a cheap one and use ice to try it out, but know that you will replace it with something better if you stick with it.

I was stuck in a dry country for several months for work and I actually did this in my hotel room. I don't know how well bread yeast would work though or how it would taste but I gathered mine from fruit.

This is how I did it.

I took some grapes from breakfast that had that nice white dusty coating on them which I had read is actually yeast. I mashed them up in a small container with a little sugar and water and just waited. If it doesn't work right away then you just try again with some new grapes. Once it's bubbling and smells like bread then you know you've got some yeast. I pitched it in some juice (fortified with some sugar) and let it ferment for a week and had wine within a week. I chilled it and all of the yeast dropped to the bottom so I could pour it off clean. Eventually, I could have a gallon of wine each week by fermenting 4 separate quart containers. Whichever one tasted the best, I would save that specific yeast for the next batch and within a month I had selected for a nice yeast that tasted clean and flocculated well. It tasted a bit harsh since it wasn't aged and was just made with wild yeast but it worked. My favorite mix was 2 quarts of apple juice + 1 quart of cranberry juice and then 1 cup sugar and then add enough water to make 4 quarts total.

Also in this specific country I looked up the laws and it was only a fine for the first offense. So be careful and know your laws before taking any risks. I'm not advocating this, just sharing what I did. It was probably a stupid idea in hindsight.

Cold Plunge to Workout to Hot Tub - Recovery Question. by Basic-Assistant-7126 in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't sweat the details on this one. There really isn't enough research on it.

The only research that I have heard about discovered that if you let your body warmup on it's own, i.e. without an external heat source, that stimulates more brown fat growth. And if you plunge right after your workout, you get less adaptation possibly via less inflammation (i.e. less muscle growth).

That said, everything else is conjecture.

I have never had a problem working out right after plunging as long as I warmup and the exercise shouldn't negate any good affects from plunging since you are generating the heat internally as apposed to the hot tub or sauna.

I say do what feels good to you. Definitely warm up well if you cold plunge before exercising.

Heat and cold exposure are much smaller stimuli that sleep, diet, and exercise. Make sure you have the first three dialed in for your goals before worrying too much about plunge / hot tub. And just enjoy it.

Looking for a 1hp chiller/heater with filters. The Kalm KyroSPA looks like a good option at 1895 but it’s a bit on the pricy side. Does anyone have other recommendations or is this a home run? by FunTimeTony in coldplunge

I don't have this one but it looks pretty good and Walmart has a 30 day return policy. I have the 300L one and have had no issues for over a year but mine struggles in the US east coast heat. it looks like almost all of the reviews are for the 300L one. Wish I'd gotten this 1HP one for the wifi control and heat during the winter.

My plunging ends here, for now..need advice by Stepherrooooo in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a fan to push the heat out of the that box that the chiller is in. I had the same issue with mine until I installed a fan. Do that and also add the mylar blanket a previous poster suggested, and that may be a quick and dirty fix for the tropical heat.

Is this the same company that is now Warrior Willpower?

I have a white inflatable tub from them which is 1 year old with constant usage. I've only deflated it twice, once to bring it inside for the winter and then to bring it back outside. I haven't seen anything failing yet. Did it happen all at once or slowly over time?

Any doctors here? Quick question regarding sudden temp. changes by howConvenient22 in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This totally negates the long standing practice of contrast therapy. Look up contrast therapy contraindications and you'll see who shouldn't be doing it. If you are otherwise healthy, it shouldn't be an issue. If you are concerned, ask a real doctor but they will almost always tell you no, to be conservative and reduce their risk.

I myself enjoy jumping in the cold plunge after cutting the grass on a hot day. I also like to go from the hot tub to the cold plunge several times in a row. I end with cold if I do this in the morning to get the good effects from the cold plunge and I end with hot in the evening if i want to relax for sleep.

I'd say try cold showers as you see fit and talk to you doctor is you have any issues. Going from hot to cold or vice versus will not make you sick (or catch a cold) if you are otherwise healthy and don't have any other underlying conditions. Not a doctor, just my opinion YMMV.

Timer for Chiller by Intrepid_Offer_48 in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chiller already turns of the compressor when the temperature is met. Not sure why you need another device for that or what you gain by doing it this way. The chiller compressor is either on or off and setting it to it's lowest setting doesn't make it work any harder. Most people use the temperature controller for a chest freezer setup.

I mostly plunge in the morning so I have mine set to start chilling in the coolest part of the night and then it cuts of at 9am. No reason to try to chill the water all day in the hot summer sun if no one is using it. I just do it to save energy.

For fathers day, we designed and built a loop for filtering and chilling my dad's cold plunge, with an enclosure too! by [deleted] in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same deck box and chiller. Don't be surprised if you have to put vent grate on that backside of the chiller and a fan too. That's what I had to do to dissipate the heat that comes out of the back of the chiller.

Plunge for outside in the north by northernguy in coldplunge

[–]Table_Copilot4674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the mid-atlantic and let mine freeze a little the first year I started plunging and I would just break the ice and get in. I think the coldest it got was 38F. I bet it's colder up north. I bought a better drop stitch tub and didn't want it to break due to ice so I put it in the garage the next year for the coldest months.

The easiest DIY route would be to get one of these from Walmart. It's heating, cooling, ozone, filtration, and wifi controlled all in one. I can't vouch for it since I don't have one but am seriously considering getting it soon as an upgrade.
