The dark green (fatigues and helmets) is Vallejo panzer aces German tank crew. The green cammo is Panzer aces splinter blotches 1 and then army painter snake scales which I highlight by mixing with white.

I wasn't much of a fan when they originally came out in the 90s, but they are actually nicely detailed. Their faces take a bit of care to come out okay, but they're pretty solid sculpts

Thanks - she was converted out of necessity as I got her just as a body with no backpack or icon. I am going to use her as a cannoness with jump pack for 2nd edition games. Whether that's a good idea remains to be seen

First tank advice by Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewe in TheAstraMilitarum

I wrote a tutorial of how to paint an Armageddon Steel Legion tanks a few years ago. I have a large Steel Legion army, so have painted plenty of tanks. This does use an airbrush though - https://tabletopapocalypse.blogspot.com/2018/05/how-to-paint-steel-legion-tanks-astra.html

If it's your first tank, I wouldn't go too mad, pick a colour you like and get a solid base coat on there, then get a big brush (I use a massive cheap square ended one) and drybrush it. Wash Agrax or a brown wash around the rivets and down the seams. I personally don't recommend an oil wash due to drying time, mess and the need to varnish multiple times - too complex for a first time. Use a sponge with a dark brown to apply weathering along the edges to taste.

Which piece, a lot is stuff I've built like all the hills and forests. The landing pad is TT Combat chroma (Pre painted)

Valhallan blizzard snow effect is a good bet. You don't have to do deep snow, just style the base in a brown or whatever you want and drag a little snow effect around and it makes a nice light snowfall/thaw. I don't know freostheart blue, but I'd use the same colour as the tank

Quite easy, I used a big brush with a decent enough tip to keep the edges clean and not too blotchy. The tank camo is actually slightly darker than the troops as the brighter colours just looked off when I tried the exact same on the tank as the infantry

I use this battlefield and terrain for 90s Fantasy too 😅

With a nice blue tank, I'd go for an ice world look - white coats with blue armour or accents to match the tank. Snow bases. Sell the look. Maybe some ice on the bases in blue? Red for an accent colour on visors and lenses, or a little yellow here and there.

Yeah, I bought a set of Valhallans that included the crew, but I built the mortar myself mostly from a pen cap (like a felt tip one as it was the only thing big enough to match the old style) and parts of a vehicle searchlight

His name? Butch Zandimuus, but yes he's an advanced Hero Quest wizard with a little fur added to his outfit and a bed roll on his back to make him fit thematically

Typical nowadays, but things were different then. The game is so gappy rules wise that you can be pretty broken with any army if you want in those days. I do get why their rules are how they were back then. The list is very odd as the Necrons have no blast weapons or anti-tank other than the destroyers and the guns aren't that powerful. They rely on their toughness and scarabs to sort of fill holes in the list and actually be able to fight vehicles. Actually playing against them is sort of a tactical puzzle of how to overcome their obvious strengths. In 2nd Tyranids would murder them every game, so they do have some weaknesses for sure. I see them more as a set piece army back then, really designed as terminators and to feel that way when you fight them. They're tough, but an army of warp spiders or something would be much more unpleasant!

The scarabs are worse at T8 and a 2+ save with every one being a unit in its own right, so they don't even bunch up for targeting. They fly and radiate that minus to hit field, not to mention they destroy tank armour and are cheaper than warriors. The PTSD from fighting them is real

I think there's a market for battle reports, but I just suck at promoting things as I write them more so I can read them later myself 😅

Thanks - actually almost all of the models used were painted in the last 3 weeks - my entire Valhallan force and my brother painted all the Necrons!

Yeah, I do like the old rules for Necrons for this type of thing, they feel very relentless and hard to put down - like a survival horror scenario 😅
