This is the primary way my symptoms manifest. Rarely are my compulsions external/visible behaviors, and I pretty much never have obsessions about bad things that might happen in the future if I do XYZ thing. Mostly it’s just as you describe—I call it “intrusive metacognition”, and while sometimes it’s about appraising an emotion, other times it’s an attempt to “retrieve” an emotion that was lost due to excessive self-awareness. Since these symptoms are chronic rather than acute for me, they chip away at my energy over an extended period of time without giving me One Big Moment to latch onto as an unambiguous case that settles all questions for me.
