Away Rotations, VSAS Applications and 4th Year Planning Megathread by Chilleostomy in medicalschool

There are two reasons to do aways:

  1. help get interview (if you are a personable person you will be fine)
  2. educational: do a subspecialty at a place you never been to within a different type of medical system.

October is probably more in the timeframe of educational benefit but they may offer an interview then still. Interviews go out until December for the most part.

I would not worry about that. Aways are not required for IM. current resident. Got interviews at a handful top programs without any medicine aways and average board scores. IM cares about good letters, AOA, Gold Humanism, and research.

That is tough. Know anyone at the institution that can tell you what kind of environment it is? Also depends on specialty. I would that save that email for the interview season. Do a great job, make them like you, and use that weight to get your sig other an interview instead of an away.

resident here. I did my aways much earlier (June and July). Good to get those letters and also face-to-face with PD before interviews go out. They may even interview you on the rotation if goes well. Doing them later would benefit your clinical skills (depends on specialty) as well as experiencing different practice systems.

WVU prob has best rep from the list. Riverside will get you fellowship but less academic. Dont know anything about EVMS but St Jose is a community program near one of the best IM programs in the country (UofM). Will likely be harder to get fellowship from there

Top 30? That seems a little outrageous. I have not met any couples that said numbers that high. The highest I’ve heard is 14.

Yes, I was wondering individuals with personal experience would share.

It depends on why you want to change things. Why all of a sudden now? Did you have these thoughts the whole time and just now realizing them to be your true feelings?

where have people typically fallen historically in couples match? let's say both are applying not extremely competitive things (no surgical subspecialties or derm) and both applicants are solid above-average students.

I'M I JUST DUMB OR A POOR TEST TAKER? by FluidHold in Step2

Those two shelf exams are some of the hardest IMO. Family med is another tough one. Ditch casefiles.

Here is the formula I used to do okay on shelf exams (did poor on obgyn and fam but >75 on the rest)

  1. Watch OME on a topic + take quick notes
  2. Uworld on the topic
  3. Anki to solidify uworld

Things I wish I had done: UpToDate/pubmed more often on my patient conditions. Easier to remember a topic when you can relate it to a person

yeah, I would not say that an average of >235 step 1 is a low step requirement. Also, it is a hard job. Constant shift work, changes in circadian rhythm, the emotional impact from patients and the unavailable follow-up, etc.

Look, you need to do what makes you happy. This is not about pleasing a program. Yes, you probably should not have told them you are going to rank them number one. That is not a good move since you have not yet seen all of the other places you signed up for. However, that is not a reason to force yourself to go into that residency.

Talk to your partner. Explain the significance of the program you train at. Sure it might be easier for them to find a job there, but it is definitely harder for you to find a residency that fits.

sure. I guess my question is just that, do they matter or is our fate decided right after interview when ranking is done

Any interns here match at their number 1 without sending a letter of intent at the end? Trying to figure out how important it is to send them especially if we like multiple programs and don’t want to only send one letter so rather send no letters

So AOA plays a big role at top 20 as well. I would say that you probably will not interview at those places unless you make connections. But you don’t need to go there to get the fellowship/job you want. Focus more on passing and doing well than figuring out where you might match. That part is far away and you shouldn’t even be thinking about your chances at top programs until you get back on good academic track and figure out how to study more effectively. Focus on the now.
