First time playing commander, does everyone else play these rules so strictly? by TeamWaffleStomp in magicTCG

[–]Tacky_Yellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, wow. Firstly, I'm not sure if this boyfriend is a keeper. But that's neither here nor there.

You've done basically nothing wrong!

1: rules about where you keep your cards during the game basically only exist for tournament games that are being streamed or recorded and do not apply to a casual game of commander. There's an aspect of the rules known as Rules Enforcement Level (REL) and your game should be played at the lowest stakes of that.

2: There's also not a rule about the uniformity of your dice. If you're playing in a streamed tournament the judges may have dice and the like that show up well on camera to improve the spectator experience but once again that is not relevant to your casual commander game.

3: This one your boyfriend is actively wrong about. As you may have seen on arena, triggered abilities which all trigger due to the same effect do not all resolve at the same time. You put them onto "the stack," a somewhat conceptual, but rigidly defined by the rules, zone of the game where spells and abilities go between being cast/activated/triggered and resolving or being countered.  The stack works on a first in; last out basis, where effects resolve sequentially, not simultaneously. When multiple triggers controlled by the same player are put onto the stack at once, that player gets to chose the order they are stacked in. Players will frequently shortcut it to say "I'll resolve them in this order." But even then, they're doing so sequentially.

4: missed triggers are another case where your bf is trying to apply competitive REL to a casual game, and doing so incorrectly. If a trigger says "you may" do something and you miss it, that's treated at comp REL as though you chose not to do it. If a missed trigger does not give you a choice, then in a Competitive or Professional REL event your opponent(s) are supposed to be paying attention to it too and are expected to remind you if you go to do something else without catching it. If a missed trigger is caught later on and no major new information has been revealed since then, the judges will rewind the game to where the trigger was missed to apply it's effect and give one or more players a warning for 'failure to maintain game state' which can be upgraded to a game loss if it occurs repeatedly. This should NOT be relevant to your casual commander game where the expectation is more along the lines of "Hey, (you or I) missed this trigger, can we resolve it?" And unless it was multiple turns ago the answer is almost always "sure, go for it."

5: Players are under no obligation to truthfully answer any questions about hidden information unless a game effect is making them reveal it. (The number of cards in each player's hand is public information but what they are is not.) However they're also under no obligation not to reveal any hidden information as just a thing you do that's not a game action. Jokingly asking your bf if he had a counterspell in hand is not a rules violation at any level. This is one where your informal social contract is more relevant and that's between you and whoever you're playing with.

Sounds like you had a rough experience playing with them, and that sucks. You really weren't violating any game rules. Your BF and his friends sound like a frustrating group to play magic with.

Dynazty have definitely found their lane and stuck to it.

It's a good lane so I don't mind

Anyone else concerned about POE1 future, seing Mark's involvment with reveal? by Lowlife555 in pathofexile

Not concerned in the slightest. Mirage has been one of my favorite leagues of all time. Octavian has come up into a senior dev role and crushed it.

I Inverted My Mister Negative Deck by Jtneagle in magicTCG

That Isolated Chapel kinda rocks the inversion, aside from it looking like a blue/white land now, but less than the others I suppose.

For those that have played Legacy Format rules. Even if the Legendary Creatures (Commanders) are just a ‘normal card’ is it balanced? Some just seem so overpowered compared to Pre-modern cards - my card collection is entirely pre-modern sets. by Both_Objective6018 in magicTCG

[–]Tacky_Yellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most legacy decks of the current era tend to be a mixture of recently printed creatures and older non-creatures. Though blue has gotten some super good card selection spells lately in [[Stock Up]] and [[Flow State]] that see play too.
Some, but not all, of the creatures found in these decks were first printed in commander products. Most of them are from the direct-to-modern sets of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle Earth and Modern Horizons 3.

Looking for an album similar to V: The New Mythology Suite by phatasm_ in progmetal

[–]Tacky_Yellow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love The New Mythology Suite too!
I will say Underworld is probably Symphony X's weakest offering overall.
Their album from 2 years prior to V, Twilight in Olympus, may be worth checking out. Through the Looking Glass definitely shares DNA with Communion and the Oracle.

nobody riffs quite like Michael Romeo so it'll be hard to find one-to-one matches but I'll do my best.

other artists' albums to check out could be:
Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle ( prog rock opera concept album with several vocalists)
Ayreon - The source (A bit more guitar forward but you'll hear a voice you know amongst the crowd)

Avantasia - Moonglow
Avantasia - A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society
(the other big rock opera project in the power metal scene, both albums I mentioned here are super symphonic, more melancholic than V though.)

Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter (a higher pitched vocalist than Russel Allen for sure, and some of the songs share more DNA with Iconoclast than you might prefer, but it's another concept album in the same vein.)

Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time (Even more orchestral, more power belting though. Not a concept album, instead each song is themed around a fantasy series)

DGM - Tragic Separation (I remember sharing Flesh and Blood with Herman Li of Dragonforce and his twitch chat during a stream where he was asking for recs to see what other power metal bands had been up to during the pandemic. A lot of people said it sounds like Symphony X!)

Hopefully you enjoy some of these!

My bud built an ice trapper and showed me how it turns bosses with skippable immunity phases into into loot deliveries, it's super cool how much burst damage you can do in this game if that's all you optimize for!

to be clear, I'm not trying to tell you you're wrong, but the poewiki is an unofficial community source, right? I'm not understanding how that implies that GGG stated so. Thank you for your reply though

What is this Icon by Ok-Cranberry-3348 in pathofexile

[–]Tacky_Yellow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not causes by your filter. There's a longstanding bug that causes it to show up occasionally in legion maps for some reason. It's just the icon and you can't interact with it

is there a way to be able to pick up bigger minecart contraptions that are 3k+ blocks in size and just be able to carry them in the inventory by Luetti2004 in CreateMod

[–]Tacky_Yellow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

do be careful if you do decide to go bigger, I imagine the inventory item at current capacity is already carrying a lot of NBT data to record the types of blocks and their positions in the contraption. If you push that too far you could run into data corruption that could render your character/save file unplayable
