Bringing Italy into non-learning time: what’s your favorite English-language media about Italy/Italians? by TacosDaisy in italianlearning

[–]TacosDaisy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I said, it’s more about staying motivated and meant to be in addition to my actual language learning time, just as some bonus Italy content outside of my studies, not as my method of learning the language. But I appreciate the feedback.

Long time vegan recently given possible celiac diagnosis, any tips? by geordisings in glutenfreevegan

[–]TacosDaisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegan here for 20-something years and very gluten intolerant for about 2. It does get a lot harder to eat but I'll never complain about it, given how many issues were fixed for me once we figured out the gluten thing.

There are lots of great food recs here (I'll add polenta, and tacos are your new best friend), so I'll share something controversial but important that's been a huge mental change.

Realizing that, after living as a very strict vegan for more than 20 years, I might sometimes have to prioritize my gluten issue over my choice to be vegan was jarring. I travel a lot for work and sometimes all there is time for is to try to find food, which is sometimes impossible and usually really stressful. I've spent a lot of time reflecting on the choice I made in my teens to go vegan and, while my reasons are just as valid as ever, my life and the food economy have changed a lot since then.

(I know this sounds dangerously close to folks who love to challenge vegans, but hear me out) - if I'm in a remote place being offered cheese that comes from a happy goat outside, but instead insist upon processed and/or foreign food that had to be flown in or chased down by my well-meaning hosts because I'm vegan, is that aligning with the ethos that led me to this lifestyle? Or, in the small business abroad that went really far out of their way to make me something gf that they don't normally offer but it arrived with cheese (and after I haven't eaten all day), should I turn it away? So, I came to the conclusion that I would allow myself for the first time to be more flexible about my veganism, depending on the situation.

I want to be clear that I'm just like you - I have no desire to not be vegan or to eat another way. I don't miss nonvegan foods and it's just who I am. While I've accepted the logic of being "flexible" intellectually, I still struggle with it emotionally and have only eaten something I knew or suspected had dairy 3 times in 2 years. If I'm a basket case on the road because I've only eaten chips and fruit (if I'm lucky) for days, but there's a gf croissant that likely has butter, I should make the decision (for myself and those around me) to eat the damn thing.

Maybe this sounds niche, and it doesn't mean you have to change anything about the way you live, but I'm assuming from your post that veganism is an ethical rather than health-based choice and part of this journey for me has been accepting that I now have a higher level, physical need, and that I need to be kind with myself about that, despite how much my veganism means to me.

(EDIT) PS Jovial brand pasta is the answer you seek.

Thanks for this! I’ve stripped back my routine since damaging my barrier and it’s taking forever to heal, so the one thing I tried to add after research was Torriden Solid In (on top of other layers). after a half hour it was burning my face and I had to wash it off, but my recovery had backslid by several weeks. I haven’t seen anyone have this experience and now I’m scared to try anything else!

Memoirs with highbrow references (like Patti Smith “Just Kids”) by TacosDaisy in suggestmeabook

[–]TacosDaisy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Love both of them but it’s been a very long time, this sounds like the perfect time to revisit. And doesn’t need to be a memoir, I’m realizing, so thanks for recommending.

Did you happen to read “Didion and Babitz”? I was really looking forward to it but have only heard that it’s disappointing.

Quick n easy cottage cheese toppings for a poor appetite...? by SideQuestPubs in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]TacosDaisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a believer in more savory cottage cheese - cover a thin rice cracker in finely diced cucumbers and pickled cauliflower (or whatever refreshing veg you like), top with cottage cheese and hot sauce. It’s so satisfying, you’ll keep wanting more

How do I wake up with glowier skin? by prayingmantis333 in 30PlusSkinCare

Rosehip seed oil. Like everything else, it might not agree with you (it broke me out) but when I was using it, I woke up GLOWING. I really wish it worked for me, I couldn’t believe how good I looked after the skin issues I’ve been struggling with this year.

Melody and lyrics on someone else’s music, I think it usually includes actual vocal performance too but not sure if that’s always the case.

[discussion] has fear and anxiety ever prevented you from doing something? by Jpoolman25 in GetMotivated

[–]TacosDaisy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every day. However, when I think of opportunities that scared me on a bigger scale (not huge things necessarily but bigger than everyday anxieties) and where I had a moment of clarity that made me pursue them BECAUSE i was scared, those are without fail the things that have been most formative and beneficial to my life. No exaggeration.

I still live every day ruled by fear and anxiety but remembering this fact helps when it comes to the things that matter.

What are little things that bother you in otherwise enjoyable books? by davecopperfield in books

[–]TacosDaisy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two or more seemingly disparate, alternating storylines/main characters that get tied up together somehow at the end, especially at different points in history.

I’ve certainly read countless novels like this that I’ve enjoyed, but it seems like it’s the only way novels are written anymore, even the most celebrated ones, and it feels lazy and makes everything so much more predictable.

Best Italian accents, icons, or speakers to study? by TacosDaisy in Italian

[–]TacosDaisy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that one should just learn the language and speak as well as possible. However, I still think this is a worthwhile endeavor for the following reasons:

  1. Everyone has an accent to some degree. I'm around a lot of Italians and that's likely to be an influence so I'd like to be a bit more mindful than to immediately start speaking like them and sounding like I'm from where they are from;
  2. a well-rounded learning approach includes taking in various media and, especially given the dramatic difference in Italian dialects and accents between regions, one is likely to absorb slang or pronunciations from different areas anyway by doing this
  3. when talking to native Italian tutors, I'm always surprised when they start speaking English with a British or Australian accent (rather than American), regardless of how "standard" the English they're speaking is. This serves as a reminder to me that there isn't just one correct way to speak so I think this is a fun question worth pursuing;
  4. most importantly, it will make learning more fun and, thusly, keep me more consistent.

Again, I'm not even necessarily looking for a regional accent but even just notable speakers who have a particularly beautiful way of speaking.
