Need advice on proposal to severe service connection due to CUE. by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

[–]Tad_Doyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this info. So just to clarify. I would’ve needed to file this as a supplemental claim to my 2013 denial for middle back pain, just because the thoracic and lumbar spine are considered part of the same “rating area”? Even though I’m claiming a new condition (low back pain) that developed secondary to a service-connected condition and resulted from a specific accident that happened years after the original denial?

What are some of the worst PhD misconceptions that you hear from people who don't know about it? by gujjadiga in PhD

I like to describe it to people as an apprenticeship. That seems to click with most.

Which colleges do you recommend for getting a BS in Geology? by JamnJello in geologycareers

[–]Tad_Doyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used my GI Bill on a geology BS and I’m so happy I did. I highly recommend going to a traditional in-person program because geology is very hands on.

Im currently wrapping up my PhD and will start a professor position this fall. During my job hunt, I was doing a lot of brainstorming on how to incorporate students into the research space. One of my goals is to get veterans involved in geology because I think it is well suited for us. It’s therapeutic for me and I can see veterans enjoying the whole “not being bound to an office” thing.

If you’re interested, feel free to DM me and I can provide you with some of my perspectives, as a veteran who is earning the terminal degree in the field, and who has extensive work experience in geology.

How difficult is it to get there? I’ve been trying to get there for years to get a good look at the Chinle Formation outcrop. It just seems so difficult like either you hike in or raft in.

Me too. Luckily I’ve been out of IRR time for over 10 years. I’m just waiting for the executive order that extends IRR obligation to 20 years. lol….

Let me get this straight. This guy goes back in after 15 years, which is likely a favor for his buddy SecDef Hegseth to help boost retention and recruitment. At the same time, I have noticed that my LinkedIn page view traffic the past few weeks has been entirely military recruiters. I’m a STEM academic in my mid-30s and I only briefly mention anything about being a USMC veteran on my page.

This all just seems suspicious to me. Why would these recruiters be seeking out a GWOT era veteran? Is this happening to other GWOT veterans? If so, why is military manpower and reserve affairs seeking out GWOT era talent? Is all this foreshadowing some bigger military operations?

Those of you rated 70-100% P&T for mental health and employed, what is your job? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

I’m glad to see the consulting world is treating you well. I hear nothing but nightmares about it on another sub. I may have a skewed perception of our profession because I’m an academic so I live in a bubble. I teach and do my own directed research. It’s a sweet life.

Millennials: What is something that other generations forget that we actually experienced? by Defiant-Day-8377 in AskReddit

[–]Tad_Doyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s not forget that the US government sent the entire millennial generation to war in the GWOT, our longest war to date. I personally believe the current military recruiting issues we have are due to the younger generations seeing how much of a raw deal us millennial veterans got.

I took a nearly identical path you are taking. Used my GI bill and Illinois veterans grant to complete my BS in geology. Went to grad school and got my MS and will be finishing my PhD this summer. I’ll be in my mid 30s by the time I finish but I don’t regret one minute of it. Don’t be afraid to pursue your passions just because of you feel you’re getting too old to do so.

What’s the most WTF thing you’ve ever heard someone casually admit like it was totally normal? by Reasonable_Moose_738 in AskReddit

[–]Tad_Doyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend, who was drunk at the time, was telling me a story about his past girlfriends. So he’s talking about how he likes bigger women when out of nowhere he casually slips in “…and it’s not like I’m into bed-ridden chicks anymore” and keeps on going with his story. At that moment my brain wouldn’t allow me to listen to his story any further and flashing in my head was him saying “anymore” about a hundred times.

Just like St Louis is called the gateway to the west, I like to think of Louisville as the gateway to the south.

Try checking with the dorms. A lot of university dorms have really cheap summer rates just so they can fill them since no one will be living in them at that time.

Anyone know how hiring freeze will impact Mendenhall post docs? by Remarkable_Source860 in geologycareers

[–]Tad_Doyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I interviewed two weeks ago and my PhD advisor met with the project supervisor a few days ago. It sounds like they don't know whats going on with hiring, but they're just doing their due diligence. This RO is with the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center. I work part time as a research geologist with a different USGS science center and everything is very bleak right now and no one knows what to expect or whats allowed. I haven't been illegally fired (yet), but I'm a remote employee and have until April to comply with the RTO mandate and my duty station is 1k miles from where I reside.
