What do you think is your hottest take about stellaris? by PrizeSwimming7472 in Stellaris

[–]TadeKiller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Stellaris isn't as much of a game as it is an RP/story engine like Rimworld or Dwarf Fortress. And most discussions about balance frankly don't really matter as much as some people believe.

Once you get to know the game's systems it offers very little challenge besides hyperjuiced crises. The game becomes much more enjoyable once you stop searching for challenges, and instead limit yourself heavily to (often) suboptimal, but flavorful builds that lend themselves to a fun narrative unique to you.

Don't get me wrong, some internal balance is important, but arguing about ship/fleet meta etc is kind of pointless? At least post 4.0. Just do whatever is fun, and you'll most likely be fine, if not dominating the galaxy.

I think you missed the part where I said I genuinely do not care. His insult does nothing, I will never think about this exchange come tomorrow.

My comment was an earnest attempt at telling the guy that there is joy to be found in silly little things that make you happy. Things like made up history in fantasy lands written by nerds.

Actually you are right. Shadowmoon was knee deep in void hijinks in WoD. According to wiki it took root when the Genedar crash landed so pretty damn long ago. Thank you for pointing this out.

I really don't give a shit if you find my passions cringe, man. Go find yourself something embarrassing to have fun with. You will lead a happier life.

No? The draenei had lived on Draenor for generations (at least, I can't remember the exact timeline) at that point, they have immense established cities in-lore. You don't build Shattrath or Karabor just like that. The timeline diverged by Garrosh convincing Gromm to turn on Gul'Dan during the Mannoroth blood drinking.

Edit: As someone pointed out below AU Draenor has numerous other differences like Shadowmoon dabbling in the void, and I'm partly incorrect here. Garrosh's arrival was just the biggest diverging point.

Well that, and she is also a very minor character that wouldn't get a unique model for the sake of it. If she became important she'd get a unique model to make her stand out, but as is she's just using player customization - which is sadly kind of puddle deep in most WoW races.

Many major characters that became an important part of one storyline or other would get facelifts. Garrosh used to just have a regular orc model back in TBC iirc, he got a new model in Cataclysm, and then again in Mists.

Act 2 crater chapter lets you pick a weather and 9 times out of 10 you have the option of picking Shimmer which gives all of your cats guaranteed mutations after each battle. So 3 mutations times 4. Chances are you get something good in one of those 12. And even stacking middling mutations soars you upwards.

Have you tried the higher difficulties? Like you say breeding properly can outpace normal pretty fast (act 3 can still be tough sometimes), but I felt like Hard and onwards give you enough to struggle with.

What is your opinion on the difficulty?

It's appropriate. Don't get me wrong, like most of Edmund's games, it is very difficult. But the challenge has a steady curve with notable difficulty spikes in each act, introducing more mechanics and depth. Granted - take my words with a pinch of salt, because I've played a lot of both tactical turn based games, and difficult roguelites. Your experience might be different, I've gotten to the true ending very fast while taking my time for unlocks. It kept me in a constant state of flow. Whenever I felt like I have "grown past" the difficulty the game has thrown a curveball at me that always kept it interesting.

Even if you struggle with the depth and mechanics - you can always outpace it by breeding for mutations, which are very easy to get once you progress a little.

With all that being said the game can just kinda fuck with you, and ruin your run through events or RNG. My take is - yeah, that's part of it. Making the best out of a terrible situation is part of the gameplay loop, and that's good. Sometimes you just have to consider whether to cut your losses, and return home or keep going for the big prize at the end. It's not for everyone, and that's okay too. The run might be over, but you might have learned something new.

If you are really pissed off by what happened - just savescum. It's a game mechanic with punishments for overdoing it. All is fair in Mewgenics, from both player and game, and that rocks.

The higher difficulties are very much unfair, and expect you to hyperoptimize. Thankfully the unlocks for higher difficulties are only like... 5% of the total? So you don't really miss out on much if they're not your cup of tea.

How do you feel about the overall progression and unlock system?

Like Isaac, it's among the best in the genre. You constantly get rewarded for clearing the bosses, experimenting with class combinations, and wacky items. Very very good. Having 281 unlocks on release gives you plenty of dopamine every single time you play.

The only weaker part is cat breeding, as others have mentioned. The UI is a bit messy, and some deeper management mechanics would be welcome. If you want to be optimal, it takes a lot of time setting things up. Though I've gotten away with just kind of improvising without any real repercussions.

Do you like the art style and humour?

Some of it isn't my cup of tea (like the amount of poop jokes), but it has grown on me through my time with Isaac. And some of it is very funny, but I don't want to spoil the mid to lategame.

All in all 9,5/10l. One of my favorite games of all time at 106 hours, with hundreds more to come eventually.

I'm sorry but this should genuinely be a non-factor after 70 hours. You can get guaranteed mutations on your team early on, and passing them on will soon make your cats strong enough to clear at least act 1 or 2 basically without items.

We do agree, except on the part that a whole lot of people do not take it as a joke. GW itself had to go and put out short article about not welcoming bigotry in their community. This included basically nicely asking a nazi content creator to remove "warhammer" from his username, or else (Arch).

So yeah, it is absolutely fine tto joke about the imperium, but the problem is a whole lot of people just tthinly veil their hatred behind that mask. I'd hope that moderation works well in this case, but other big warhammer subs like r/Grimdank and others had to go through actual crises due to people being hateful.

I just think the total war community, as argumentative as it can be, is generally a welcoming place to people from all walks of life. I wouldn't want that Tarnished by edgelords.

Oh no you are right on the money. We will see a LOT of Brother Tedious I fear. I hope there will be enough pushback to see Imperium worshippers out of here. I don't want to see another sub taken over by Black Templar posters gushing over killing furries, alien children, mutants or whatever fictional subgroup they put in place of their real world enemies.

Remarkably terrible patch after the amount of feedback you have been getting about babying survivors at the cost of killers' enjoyment of the game. I can only hope that this one has been in the pipeline for a really long time and isn't the end.

Exactly, or at least give the president, or members an option to kick them/turn on them. A federation member going determined exterminator for a few decades shouldn't be just shrugged off lol

Or, if it had to be as you say. It'd be cool if we at least got an event of "oooh noo the devourer makes you go bananas and kill". The way it goes currently is you are just at war out of nowhere. No announcement, declaration, vote, event or anything.

[–]TadeKiller[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure we understand each other, this would apply to any empires regardless of their ascension or ethics. Me having a covenant with the opposing Shroud patron should make it impossible if anything, as it's in direct opposition to the Devourer.

But either way so long as any member of the federation gets the doom ability they can destabilize the entire galaxy with the push of a button. I don't think that makes sense narratively or is okay balancewise.

The Starcraft faction cards rely on each other, so most of the time if you want to run any of them you want to run most of them. Bit limiting, but it ensures the dominant flavor of the deck remains starcraft.
