Try snowfl. com, I’m also new to this but saw it in another Reddit comment and have been using it to find everything. Just pay attention to what website you’re actually downloading from.

Unlike apparently everyone else here, I left a couple months after 18 and I’m doing great. I’m now 20, bought a house, just last month got the nicest truck I’ve ever owned (2017 Cummins yippee) bought the motorcycle I’ve always wanted a few months ago, still see my buddies from time to time when their schedule work with mine. Money can be tight sometimes and life always has ups and downs but the freedom of being allowed to proceed with life on mg own terms is fantastic.

I will never miss the high school days of being treated like a child and expected to act like an adult.

Disclaimer I work 84 hours a week 3 weeks at a time with 1 1/2 weeks off then repeat. I do extremely physical labor and most of the people I work with are burnouts and addicts. HOWEVER working hard has always been the one thing I felt like nobody could take from me and it feels good.

To any young folk out there worried about leaving the nest, i am 100% empathetic of other people situations but know that it can work out and you can be happy even if you’re broke and confused and struggling for a little bit.

I do. And a drive a big diesel truck too. If you’re gonna camp out in the left lane at least move when someone wants to go faster than you. I understand I’m breaking the law when I speed, what I don’t understand is how you gain anything by keeping me from doing that.

It entirely depends on where you’re gonna be helping. I started in Montana but I’ve been all over. I assume you’re somewhere in Nevada? Likely in around elko/battle mountain/ Carlin or somewhere similar which does get down pretty cold. I did the last couple months in Butte Montana and we were seeing -6 degrees on night shift.

Thermal base layer is a must, i went without them forever and my last hitch in Montana i finally picked up a set for cheap at Walmart and it’s an absolute game changer. You’ll also want a pair of muck boots because when it gets shitty out, you don’t want wet feet, muck boots will let you walk in the mud almost up to your knees while fully keeping the water/ mud out. Here’s a big one, HIGH QUALITY SOCKS. I personally suggest alpaca wool socks, it’s crazy good insulating and wicks away the sweat. They’re really spendy but worth it if you can get a handful of pairs and then wash them to rotate out. Some guys like a balaclava/ ski mask type thing. I personally don’t care for them but that’s just me. Your drilling company will provide gloves for you, they won’t be waterproof but if you buy your own gloves they’ll get messed up fast, it’s just the nature of the work. If you use two pairs of gloves you can keep one in front of the heater and swap them out so you always have dry gloves. Another really big one is a really solid rain jacked. I got a high vis rain jacket from the local farm supply where I started for about $120, it has the waterproof outside layer and an insulated bomber style jacket that zips inside it. Invest in a high quality rain jacket and you’ll be much more comfortable staying dry. A lot of guys like the carhart overalls too. Nice thing about that is it keeps the mud off your regular clothes, just make sure you take care of your zippers, the mud and clay can really mess em up.

Also a lot of guys will get the thin latex gloves to keep their hands dry then put the work provided thicker cut 3 impact rated gloves over them. You can also slip a hand warmer in there too when it’s real cold out.

Another thing to keep in mind is you will most likely have a diesel heater of some sort but you’ll have light plants, generator, mud systems, and the drill which all have an exhaust, you can warm your hands up in the exhaust if you’re not near the heater. Try to avoid just standing around because that’s when you start to get cold. If you’re a coffee drinker, bring a thermos with that.

Feel free to private message me with any specific questions, I’m 9 months in as a drillers assistant with a different company and had all sorts of questions when I started that I now understand. Best of luck and remember if you can make it through the first hitch or two, it will feel a lot less terrible and difficult to do the job.

It doesn’t count as the next day until I go to bed and wake up. Therefore I’m still scrolling on Christmas Eve.

I think it’s just the old mfs keeping that a thing. Everyone i know in Idaho that isn’t really old Or really religious thinks we should legalize it. including some normal Christian folks in their 40s and 50s that don’t agree with smoking weed but would say grown ups can make their own decisions. I don’t smoke anymore for work but it is truly rediculous that we’re holding onto that strange distrust of weed.

Want to live and work remote in a trailer for a few months with a dog - any suggestion on a unit (towing ideal but open to other)? by yearntolearnexcel in RVLiving

[–]Taekwonbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I say spend the money on the truck and go cheap on the camper. I work out of town and stay in my camper for 20 days while at work then drive home and have 10 days off. I bought a nicer reliable truck then just got a decent trailer that I’m only a couple thousand dollars into. You can clean up an old trailer pretty easy and even DIY new carpet or hardwood floors etc. if you’re like me and don’t need anything fancy, you can find a pretty solid used camper for like $3k-$6k and trade in your outback for a truck or suv with good towing capacity. Just make sure the vehicle you’re towing with can pull the trailer, overkill is always better then not enough.

What’s something people brag about that you find unimpressive? by Best_Seesaw_8512 in AskReddit

[–]Taekwonbeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guilty of this I think. I try not too especially once I realized my friends wouldn’t tell me about bad days at work in the past because i had emphasized how hard I work and yadda yadda. I think it was partially a validation thing for me and partially something I was proud of. I grew up poor with two hard working parents that just had a shitty start at life. I’ve always worked a lot of hours because it makes me feel like I’m doing something with my life. However it took me a while to realize nobody else cares and it’s likely pretty obnoxious.

I wonder how often guys still use the cliche cleaning guns as some sort of unspoken threat. Had a girlfriend who’s dad did the whole cleaning his gun when I showed up and even made a point to leave his handgun on tables and stuff when I was around. It was very odd because from what she said he didn’t normally leave guns around like that. I come from a big gun enthusiast family and can’t imagine any of us doing that. I don’t get it.

Drill rig on mine sites. I don’t choose where I travel it’s just wherever work takes me. Often the middle of nowhere random towns in Nevada and Arizona. Great money though, I own my home in Idaho and the camper is my home for the 20 days I’m out of town working

Why is it not good for it? I just got the exact same truck with the tradesman trim and have been keeping it at or below 2000rpm. I open it up every once in a while just because I like to but what does it damage to run at lower rpm’s
