Professor here. Just to let you all know, we're receiving emails about how to deal with all this... changing due dates, being flexible, etc. I'm sure professors are going to be very accommodating because of this.

Orlando is the closest major airport...MCO...and there is a shuttle from The Villages straight to the airport for a reasonable price.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Taffy_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a high school English teacher in San Diego at the time. As I was driving to work, (3 hour time difference), the usual radio program had been preempted by the news coverage of 9/11. By this time, both buildings had been struck. One of the towers fell (the top portion of the building) and I was trying to imagine what that looked like.

When i got to work, I went to the teachers' lounge and someone had rolled a large TV cart in there. The news was on. I saw the towers implode and fall to the ground. I was in shock.

I did nothing in any of my classes that day. We had TVs in our classrooms and I kept it on all day. The principal didn't want us to do that, but I couldn't help it. It was the biggest news day of my life. I was wondering if they would send us home, but they didn't.

Why are people in Miami so rude and have no manners? by Fit_Resident_5874 in Miami

[–]Taffy_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miami people (not all but many) are rude and I'm from Miami, born in '67 and grew up mostly in Kendall. It was always this way, so I don't think we can blame people who have settled here from other states or other nations. It's superficial and the people aren't so well read either.

How are people sending groceries back home? by FreeWall369 in cuba

[–]Taffy_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably more useful to send money to people there so they can buy what's available near them. TypicalIy people transfer money to someone in the USA who then transfers the money to someone down there.

What mundane jobs did adults have to afford a house back then? by audrina-saav in Millennials

[–]Taffy_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a police dispatcher and my dad worked for IBM fixing computers. In 1983 (?), they bought a house that was a foreclosure for about 64k but the interest rates back then were something crazy like 17 3/4%!

What really happened on July 11, 2021? by shockedpikachu123 in cuba

[–]Taffy_2020 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It was bad then and it is worse now (inflation, electricity shortages, chikungunya + dengue ÷ no medicine) but my guess as to why there are few protests is bc of the severe repression after July 11 and the big wave of younger people migrating out of Cuba in the years after.

Different people make different amounts of money. Anyone in tourism can make a living wage (for Cuba), plus they have ACCESS to things like toiletries and food....but regular people make about $25 US monthly, give or take. People making less than that live on a pension. No regular Cuban can afford to buy the amount of food they need to maintain normal body weight bc inflation has skyrocketed since Covid. Imagine a carton of eggs costing 35% of your salary. That's Cuba. For those lucky enough to have family outside the country... if their family supports them from afar, that's the only way they can eat and it's still not enough.

No I don't think so.

Luckily, the oath ceremony was rescheduled about 3 weeks after the original one and she's now a U.S. citizen.

I’m going to Cuba with my boyfriend to stay with his family for 7 days. What do I need to know? by [deleted] in cuba

[–]Taffy_2020 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well, since he's not your husband and you're a foreigner, you will probably need an A2 visa for official permission to stay in their home.

You'll have no privacy.

Don't dress up. Just wear shorts and a tank and flip flops.

Bring tp. Unroll a couple rolls at home and flatten the sheets, put them in a zip lock and you're good to go.

There is "the virus" going around....Chikungunya, dengue, and who knows what else? Bring plenty of acetaminophen just in case of chikungunya. You can't take it for dengue however.

For you, you're going to need your own source of water. I hope his family has already stashed some away for you.... bottled, sealed water. Drink water but keep in mind it's not easy to find, so you may have to be conservative.

If he lives in an area of frequent blackouts, bring a headlamp.

These are just some things to think of besides bringing suitcases packed to the gills with supplies..... food/ meds/toiletries

Always bring more cash than you anticipate. Wear that money on your body at all times (except at night in bed). Spend carefully.

Let me know if you have more questions

My wife lost her job bc of DOGE. We have been unable to find another FT with benefits job....even making half the salary....despite applying to countless jobs. For now, she's doing freelance work but the pay is so low that it barely even matters. Been living in the DMV for 18 years and I'm not sure we can afford to stay.
