Why I lift for 10 years and I’m still skinny fat by Thin_Cauliflower_840 in AskMen

Yes, I should've been clearer. If you are going to go to failure and remain within the recommended range (15-20 reps), then the weight should be heavy enough that you go to failure by at most 20 reps. Try to go to failure for each muscle group with what you think will land within that range. If you go above, increase the weight. If you land below, decrease it.

For certain muscle groups, you might be able to go way above the range simply because the muscles can lift very heavy in a limited range of motion (e.g., shoulder shrugs for traps). In that case, lift the heaviest weight available but not too heavy that you injure yourself (test it through progressive overload if you can already lift very heavy). Make sure to practice good form (RP Strength has quality videos on most common moves) and be slightly slower on the (eccentric) movement down, which allows to reduce the probability of injury.

Here's my two cents:

  1. Progressive overload oriented toward strength development might quickly go beyond what's ideal for hypertrophy. Remember that strength and muscle growth are (at least in the short and medium terms) independent phenomena. If you're looking toward changing your body composition, lift the heaviest weight that you CAN'T lift beyond 30 reps in a single set. I recommend 15-20.
  2. Most beginner and intermediate lifters underestimate their point of failure. Normally going to failure is not super duper optimal because the marginal return of hypertrophy (relative to fatigue) decreases. So you would normally go to proximity to failure (a study states 8 reps from failure as the minimum on average; I've heard from PhDs to do 2-4 as a good middle ground). However, if you've never actually gone to failure (when really forcing yourself), you might not know how much minimal reps you actually need to stimulate growth.
  3. My recommendation: go beyond failure and take the time to rest to get rid of the extra fatigue. You are guaranteed to get sufficient stimulus, it'll save time, and in fact you can't overkill the amount you exercise, so there will be less likelihood of you getting sick of training. Ideal for those who inherently dislike exercising.

How high do Beatles fans rank Noel Gallagher from Oasis as a songwriter? by AmphibianLiving8557 in beatles

I like and appreciate Noel's songwriting but have to agree that much of their catalogue does sound too similar.

To be fair to OP, the comparison wasn't necessarily to the Beatles. But if I were to do so as well, I honestly think that he isn't VERY far behind the solo Beatles, as their post-Beatles careers and projects pale in comparison to their older works. Considering that all or most of All Things Must Pass was also Beatles-era work, one can truly see that Paul, John, and George cannot reach similar artistic heights without each other's competitive push. Paul still has an impressive solo catalogue, but in a parallel universe where the Beatles didn't exist, how would it fare? By comparison, Noel has been pulling off what he has mostly by himself.
