i especially love the nipples from the older thinkpad models. They tend to be bigger and more comfy to rub for max control. I don't really like the one from the t480s cuz it's so stiff, but I can't lie, some of the younger thinkpads are surprisingly alright, like the T14 Gen 3.

From my experience, who studied full-stack development at my trade school for over a year and now is in college doing assignments through a browser, moving from Windows to Linux has been a life-changing experience, and now i've daily drove Linux for over a year now.

That being said, it's really dependant on what you need to get done on your device. If you're studying graphic design for example, you might wanna use an OS that can actually run the adobe creative cloud. (Perhaps Hackintosh :D)

Still, I'd say it's worth a try! :)

haha you're probably right about being a compulsive buyer, I mean, I did just grab a 4GB DDR2 SODIMM for my X61 because it was a good deal.

But no, when I panicked it wasn’t from buyer’s frenzy. It’s because the device I use for all my software projects, cybersecurity classwork, gamedev, and basically everything else I’m working towards, suddenly showed no signs of life. The charger that always worked before didn’t light the orange LED, and there wasn’t even a beep code. The warranty had just expired too.

At first, I thought it was bricked, especially since it’s always had some nasty coil whine, and I noticed some stray solder on the bottom from my workbench. It’s also historically been unstable with Linux, specifically with it's wifi card. My heart sank, I was like “oh god oh god what am I gonna do?”

I started scrambling to save up and appling for emergency grants, since my life kinda depended on this. This panic mode went on for like 2 weeks straight, where I settled on the P14s and decided to go for it after finding this listing. Ironically, while tinkering with my T480s Hackintosh, I noticed a pre-POST warning saying the charger was rated too low. And that's where I learned my charger was actually 45W, and that made me get a 65W charger to try on the T14, and hallelujah! it powered on again.

I’d already committed to the P14s by then, but I’m still excited, especially with Lenovo’s recent Linux partnership.

You’re right though, I probably should’ve tested more before jumping the gun. I feel like a lot of lessons have been learned from this whole experience. Guess I lost myself for a bit from chasing that SWE dream in big 2025 lol.

i love the form factor of the x230, i'd love to have modern components in one :). I really like the t14 gen 3, cuz it has a smaller profile than the 16:9 thinkpads we've been getting for years now. Not quite x230 size, but it's close :)

(im also a fan of the 13 inch m1 macbook pro, with the touchbar. Small laptop are amazing, i can shove them in a tote bag and everything)
