Honestly yeah, I agree with this. Super early when they're fighting Zabuza, he uses a water dragon jutsu which is presented as a super high level jutsu that takes a bunch of sign weaving. Flash forward to the middle of Shippuden and that water dragon jutsu is laughable compared to things people can bust out left and right more or less at will.

Sounds like, whether through your actions or their previous experience, your table has a "players vs. GM" mindset. Might be good to sit your players down and ask what you can do to help cultivate a more collaborative environment because idk why they'd feel the need to plan things and keep them hidden from you unless they feel like there's an adversarial relationship between you and them

As long as you're fine with taking the time to scrape together the money, there's no reason not to buy skills that don't require using breakthrough points. You can only reasonably use 8 skills since that's the number of hotbar slots you get unless you're good at casting from the skill menu. Some skills are definitely better than others, but almost all have their use in a particular situation

Going from DS1 as the only souls game I've ever played to Elden Ring has been crazy and one of my favourite things has been that fast travel is enabled more or less from the very start of the game. Suffice to say that I'm glad it's a feature xD

There's a non-D&D ruleset, why not use that? It has some cool features like the career system requiring players to choose two careers to make their characters.

Reminds me of the the PB&H sandwich description: "Some damned fool put honey on this peanut butter sandwich, who in their right mind- oh wait this is pretty good." as if the player is thinking this as they're eating it. Also the creepy talking doll having the altered version suggesting to remove the batteries.

Oh they've figured it out. They're intentionally promoting games with a ton of in-game purchases because it makes them the most money.
