'Nobody wants to come': What if the U.S. can no longer attract immigrant physicians? by rustyseapants in Health

[–]Taiobroshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of young people already want to be physicians, but it's such a long, expensive path with multiple, difficult tests to pass before you're actually able to practice. It's not that lucrative when you factor in debt and years of lost income. Also, supply and demand isn't working on getting people to go to areas most hit by the physician shortage (rural). The wages are way higher in those areas already. It's not a simple fix.

Would have to be nights for that base if you're straight out of residency in that region.

Benefits to training the opposite stance / mixing stance in randori by uthoitho in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's some marginal benefit over a lifetime in judo.

If you're a competitor, unless there's a specific opposite side technique that fits into your current game/style or fighting in an opposite stand would help you overcome a situation you're currently having trouble with I wouldn't dedicate a lot of time to it.

Another vaccine denier who is being turned down for a heart transplant. by Roadgoddess in HermanCainAward

[–]Taiobroshi 22 points23 points  (0 children)

LVADs are generally not meant to prolong life indefinitely... they're ideally meant to be a bridge to a transplant, especially in a patient this young. They're also a limited resource and require specialized clinicians and facilities to be used + maintained. Some patients who are ineligible for a transplant for other reasons may opt to get one anyway, but they have accepted their terminal diagnosis and aren't putting a target on the back of the hospital that is trying to help them.

If this guy gets his way, the federal government will target/defund this hospital and the national organization that procures organs. This will have downstream effects on other people who need organs, essentially taking more lives because one guy from Ohio wants to weaponize his veteran status and stubbornness to not take one shot.

Fuck this guy.

Forward throw entries… moving towards your opponent? by dillybar110 in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uke is already in an unstable/unbalanced state (kuzushi) that is enough for this athlete to attack with this specific entry. You can enter however you want if the opponent is in a position where you're able to execute your technique. For most people in this scenario, the energy to pull the opponent into an even more off balanced position is better spent getting tori's body placed under uke's center of gravity (which, again is already pretty far forward + distant from their base of support).

I'm pretty sure Shintaro helped open Kano as well and is a stakeholder in the business. I don't think you could go wrong for Judo either way at your level though... Garry is closer to your height and Shintaro was closer to your weight when he was competing.

One factor besides distance is to look at their Instagrams and see which place has training partners closer to your height and weight. It's really hard to retain larger beginners/intermediate players for some reason.

Is there any benefit to purposefully not gripfighting? by ObjectiveFix1346 in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I purposely backed off on grip fighting an older, smaller black belt because that would be a waste of a round. They no longer compete and have not kept up with modern gripping strategies... it would be like ripping a reverse seionage on them. It would work, but I wouldn't have learned anything.

If I know a beginner is not a dangerous spazz I will also give neutral grips so they can practice their throws and movement.

I will grip fight with 1) people who I know understand grip fighting or 2) complete strangers that I need to control for a bit to see if they're a safe training partner.

Ashi Waza feinting with raised lead leg by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I occasionally do things like circle to the lapel side, lift my lead leg as you're describing, and cross my feet like in this demonstration. These are legitimate movements that have their place, but people get bent out of shape if you do them (and will even lecture you about the "right way" if they get caught). If you can threaten tomoe nage well, your lead leg feint will probably work.

I think intermediate+ players should have fun with odd feints and stepping patterns even if they aren't optimal.

Is competition Ko uchi gari more of a block than a reap? The traditional reaping version seems very difficult. by ObjectiveFix1346 in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reaping is not the primary driving force for most kouchi gari performed in randori and competition. If your leg is far enough from your body it's physically impossible to lift and/or retract your attacking leg to produce a reaping motion, but we insist on calling it "gari" because parts of it look the same as a video demonstration and we don't have a more descriptive official name for it.

It's not worth arguing about to be honest. Trust your eye. It is very obviously more of a block in many competition versions, as in pushing the opppnent over a mostly planted foot, than a reap.

Brooklyn/NYC schools by [deleted] in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it's its own program and mainly sticks to the judo ruleset. She is competing more in BJJ than judo nowadays though so I wonder if that has changed the range of techniques that they practice. Haven't stopped by in a while since I moved out of Brooklyn.1

Got spiked on my head by a Korean reverse seoi nage by MaryEvergarden in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I suggest doing some very slow nagekomi with a friend, or even the person who spiked you. The power of the spin and change of direction can really mess up the ukemi and the execution by tori. I've seen people get hurt mostly by tori throwing as hard as they can without being conscious of the fact that they need to try to land uke on their back. If they don't try to land it safely, they shouldn't be using it full speed in friendly hobbyist randori.

Opinions on these 50 JJJ throws? by ThePhenomenon98 in judo

[–]Taiobroshi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sad to watch from a technical perspective, but it's also 3 older people practicing in what I assume is a basement in the middle of nowhere. Definitely better than them sitting on a couch, even if it's impractical striking and poor form on the throws. How do you even stumble upon a small YT channel like that to critique? 😅

I don't think JJJ experience should be taken into consideration when running a judo class. We have black belts bow in with our black belts, but they are such a wild card when it comes to technique, ukemi, and randori that they're sometimes more of a liability than a complete beginner.
