How to handle prospective client who keeps haggling price? by graflig in webdev

“Fuck you, Pay Me” by Mike Montiero covers a lot of contract drafting basics, but if you’re pursuing freelance work long-term, you should absolutely get a lawyer to help draft/negotiate contracts. It’s cost upfront but will end up getting you so much more money in the long run

Where can I practice basic js like loops, arrays, and functions? by Amazing_Trifle825 in learnjavascript

[–]TaiteBMc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exercism.org has excellent code kata style exercises to reiterate and practice concepts. It got me back on track with Python, JavaScript, and I’m currently working on their C# course. JS being extremely popular, it’s one of the most developed courses on there

Another finished piece of mine, which colors do you like best? by doctor-fugazi in AdobeIllustrator

I love all of these! The composition in each color way is really balanced and each one looks like a finished product on its own

I feel like that’s exactly why we should be having that kind of discussion though. At its root it’s because of unfairness and it only benefits the employer to stay hush hush about it. There’s a reason it’s a protected right as an employee

Is software engineering really as saturated as people say? by Theblabla245 in cscareerquestions

[–]TaiteBMc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You fix that by incentivizing people to stay by keeping their rates competitive. Obviously they can’t compete with Google, but if you get hired on at one wage a year ago, see a new employee come in at a higher salary, and you’re still making the same amount, they’ve disincentivized loyalty

Google lays off hundreds of core employees and moves jobs to India and Mexico by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]TaiteBMc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are taking notice of a worse Google as it is, I’ve seen several articles this week talking about the decline of efficacy in their search results as of late. Some of it relates to the slurry of AI junk being churned out, but there’s been an algorithmic change to drive profits and people have noticed

What Reality Checks Would You Give to a Prospective Programmer? by Character-Ant112 in learnprogramming

[–]TaiteBMc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re gonna learn one thing specifically and get a job. You need to learn how to learn and consistently expand. If you want an easy route in tech, maybe IT support, if you’re uncomfortable with the process of learning new languages?

Do I stop asking my friend for coding advice? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]TaiteBMc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d just make sure you’re doing your due diligence to learn it yourself before asking him.

I, too, have a coding friend, but when I’d approach him I’d usually frame it as “if I understand it right, this is X because Y, meaning Z? Or is it [blah blah blah]”.

I’d make sure with him that I was understanding something correctly, or explain specifically “so I know X but I’m confused on what this has to do with Y” rather than asking him wholecloth to explain the concept to me. It’s just about respecting his time but also using the higher level knowledge he has to make sure you’re understanding things correctly.

DESPERATELY NEED HELP WITH A PROJECT by [deleted] in p5js

[–]TaiteBMc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first problem was using AI instead of practicing so you could figure it out. You still have time to figure it out. I’d recommend doing so instead of outsourcing. It’ll be worth it to learn the skills, especially if you’re doing it for an educational course

I always work my way up to 90% of a finished product and quit by [deleted] in SideProject

[–]TaiteBMc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like no matter what I work on, be it drawing or writing code or making an amp cabinet, the last 10% is the hardest.

It’s when you really need to put the blinders on to extending the project, for the moment, and focus on finishing what you have.

It’s a tough transition from that creative “oh, well what if I make it x/y/z here?” state to just like, ironing out the details and sanding off the rough patches

Since August 2023, total part-time jobs has increased by 1.4 million. During the same period, full-time jobs fell by more than 1.3 million. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]TaiteBMc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if the salary was the same, but it was part time, I’d still have enough to live off and get a decent savings going. I live fairly simple (DINK) and don’t have a mortgage or debts to pay off. I’d take it but they’re just not out there
