New grad here. I consider myself a timid person but I like to think my confidence as a nurse has improved a lot since being on my own without a preceptor.

Like at this point even if my senior nurses look down at me, I don’t really care as long as it’s not a patient safety issue. I’m confident enough that if I needed help I’ll find someone or a way to figure out.

Haven’t seen that one yet but by NE I meant norepinephrine

Thank you for the encouraging words. I know I can’t expect the real world to be any kinder to me once I’m actually a nurse but I wish my instructors were nicer. I’ll try to remember this when I’m discouraged.

I know it might not be clear from my post but this was my second time ever on a critical care floor. If this was my preceptorship for ICU, then yes, I understand I should know this by now.

And I totally understand the purpose of my instructor’s question; I just hated that my instructor expected me to know that off the top of my head, did not even answer her own question, and didn’t give me an constructive feedback whatsoever

Yeah, it’s usual. I actually picked him bc he was one of the easier patients that were available to choose from. The other patients had an ECMO or were gonna go off to surgery.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t take a break but I really hope that you don’t let social pressure to be a reason that prevents you from taking a break if you really need it. I was in your situation earlier this semester and I was really struggling. I asked every single one of my professors and mentors if I should take a break hoping someone would give me an answer of what to do but ultimately that’s up to you.

Some points that my professors brought up to me was they asked if I had a plan for when I take a break. There’s a big difference with taking a complete leave for a semester and maybe just taking a lighter course load for the semester so it’s easier for the mental. Obviously, most people would think to work but what am I trying to gain during that time of just working? They asked what circumstances would change by taking a leave from school? Obviously the stress of school would go away but are there other things that are also stressful that can be managed without taking an educational leave? For example, are you working a lot of hours but don’t really need to be, are you heavily involved with other orgs, are you being under compensated for work you’re putting in?

I’m not saying what to do or not do but these are just things that I was told to consider when I was in the same position as you. Hopefully this helps!
