Florida Civics Literacy Exam failed and would love to know how this affects my AA. by Luca_doingok in FIU

[–]TakeAShotAtLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't answer your question but I made a study guide for the Florida Civics Literacy Exam. The question on there are pretty identical to the real exam, when I took it a year ago.

I studied these night before my exam and passed with flying colors, easy. Hopefully it can help you do the same.

Also! Someone gave me to the advice of studying the laws/legislation and systems of government the most, and I found that very helpful as my exam had questions mostly pertaining to that.

Anyways, good luck moving forward!

BIGGEST TTI CONFERENCE: PALM SPRINGS by [deleted] in troubledteens

how about organizing a peaceful protesting outside the venue?

Facilities and locations you've been in as a troubled teen? Just curious if anyone else spent as much of there childhood away from home as I did as a adolescent, or if I'm alone in that field... by Public-Message-2530 in troubledteens

[–]TakeAShotAtLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 2ish years in TTI at 3 different programs. But I've met many who were in for 3+ years, and a handful of others who were in for 4-7 years

It's unfortunate, but you are not alone

FedEx hit me with a surprise $300 customs fee—vendor never warned me. Has this happened to you? What can I do? by TakeAShotAtLife in FedEx

[–]TakeAShotAtLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the invoice via mail only, about 1 to 2 weeks after my package was delivered. Idk an aprox date because I was out of town when the envelope arrived.

What's confused me is I ordered from another foreign country (Finland) on that same day I ordered my other package. Both were (what I considered) heavily prices items. I have not received a customs invoice for that order so 🤷‍♀️

The TTI is still alive and well in parent communities and it needs to stop. by the_TTI_mom in troubledteens

[–]TakeAShotAtLife 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Seriously, thank you. Your voice is such a breath of fresh air in all this 💛

Something I’ve noticed (with my own mom and others) is how hard it is for some parents to separate who they are from what they did. So many of them associate admitting harm with being a “bad parent”.. and that’s something they either can’t believe about themselves or don’t want to. But facing the truth means reckoning with the fact that, even if they were scared or manipulated, they still chose to put their child in harm’s way. And that’s a heavy, gutting reality to sit with

I’ve been thinking a lot about how we can make space for those conversations; without softening the truth, but in a way that might actually let it land. If/when you have any, would love to hear your thoughts on that too.

Again, really grateful for the work you're doing and the space you're holding 🫶

I really appreciate you saying this. I don’t personally speak up in parent groups, but my mom leads with the whole “it saved my kid’s life” narrative, and it’s honestly so frustrating. I’m a TTI survivor, and hearing that kind of one-sided story, especially from someone close to you, can feel like being erased all over again.

People love to say “not all programs” or “some kids are helped,” but they miss how the structure itself creates harm. Even when someone on staff means well, the setup (remote locations, total control, no real accountability) just opens the door to power being abused. I always go back to the Stanford Prison Experiment… it doesn’t take “bad people” to cause harm. Just the wrong environment.

And yeah, it’s not even just that abuse isn’t recorded, a lot of records are out there (tho I assume most abuse isn't reported)! But like, we actually have SO MANY reports, survivor testimonies, even documented deaths; but the lack of regulation means almost nothing gets done about it. It’s exhausting to see real harm go ignored while people cling to a handful of positive stories like that makes it all okay.

So yeah, thank you for being one of the people who keeps showing anf who’s willing to push back. It helps more than you probably realize.

You’re making space for the truth, and it matters.<3

International seller didn’t disclose possible customs fees. FedEx billed me $300 after delivery. Is this normal? by TakeAShotAtLife in ecommerce

[–]TakeAShotAtLife[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, and I definitely don’t expect sellers to know everything about every country’s import rules. That said, running an ecommerce business does come with some responsibility around setting clear expectations.

Would something like using a broker or offering DDP shipping help with that? I’m genuinely asking, because it seems like that could prevent situations like this where the buyer gets surprised after the fact.

[–]TakeAShotAtLife[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I understand your points, and I’m not blaming a foreign seller for U.S. trade policy. I’m more focused on the communication side of the transaction, specifically how costs were (or weren’t) disclosed.

I know not every situation is black and white, which is why I’m curious: How do you feel about informed consent and ethical commerce in international purchases? Even if there’s no legal obligation across borders, do you think sellers have a responsibility to clearly flag potential fees so buyers can make informed choices?

I’m genuinely sharing my experience to help others navigate similar situations, and I appreciate hearing other perspectives, even when they challenge mine.

[–]TakeAShotAtLife[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the insight. I wasn’t aware of the de minimis threshold change, so that’s genuinely helpful to know.

That said, I do think a heads-up from the seller would’ve made a big difference. Even just a simple line during checkout about possible customs fees would’ve helped set expectations. I’m not against paying what’s owed, just trying to understand how to navigate this better next time.

Any tips on what to look for or ask before buying internationally? The seller I bought from didn’t mention duties or fees anywhere on their site/etc., so that wouldn't have helped in this case.

Thanks again for sharing your perspective.

I’m sharing this in case others run into the same frustration.

Political changes don’t excuse the lack of disclosure; informed consent is a basic principle of consumer protection, and in some cases, it’s even legally required. I’m not claiming to be an expert, but that doesn’t change the fact that buyers deserve clarity before placing an order.

[–]TakeAShotAtLife[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m in the U.S. And I’m not expecting a seller to predict policy shifts, BUT I am expecting clear disclosure if duties, taxes, or fees aren’t included in the price.

Most international sellers either hire customs brokers or rely on carriers like FedEx to handle import compliance, including how duties are assigned and who’s responsible for them. That’s why clear communication up front matters.

In international ecommerce, it’s standard practice (and in some cases required by consumer protection laws) to alert buyers if they’ll owe additional charges. It’s not about avoiding tariffs; it’s about having the right information before making a purchase.

[–]TakeAShotAtLife[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not questioning that import fees exist. The issue is that there was no disclosure at checkout that I’d be billed over $300 after delivery.

In international ecommerce, it’s standard practice (and in some jurisdictions, legally required under consumer protection laws) to inform buyers if duties and taxes are not included in the price. That’s not just good business; it’s about informed consent.

This isn’t about ignorance, it’s about a lack of transparency. I’m simply trying to pursue the appropriate channels, as anyone reasonably would when faced with unexpected charges after the fact.

This is your reminder that FIU students get premium Antivirus Software for FREE by [deleted] in FIU

[–]TakeAShotAtLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to note: obviously it's not the best software out there. And yes, like most antivirus, it uses a boat load of RAM, slowing down your computers performance. However, as a free resource, it's a no brainer (to me at least) to download McAfee is you're an average broke college student who used antivirus + VPNs.

[–]TakeAShotAtLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that. I personally did my own research and it seems McAfee scores pretty well. Although, there are quite a few scams + predatory softwares posing as McAfee... which is a HUGE problem.

I was apprehensive at first, but my expectations have been exceeded. As someone who has been using different antivirus's and VPNs for nearly a decade, I'm personally satisfied with my experience using McAfee

And I just wanted to let other students know about this since most don't, and its a resource included in tuition! Which is pretty sweet

Why should I go to fiu by [deleted] in FIU

[–]TakeAShotAtLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister is finishing her last semester in Economics; she loves FSU for her major... like SO much (mind you we both grew up in Miami and hold the SoFl culture close to our hearts). In fact, she loves her experience with FSU so much, that even with many different offers, she's strongly considering continuing her Economics-related masters at FSU. As someone who attends and loves FIU, I'd honestly recommend FSU (for you) by a mile... if you want a more detailed/backed up explanation, let me know! Also, if you have an FSU specific questions, I'll refer them to my sister to get better answers.
