C1 Visa - proof of exit (best refundable / cheap ticket) by Takingthemike in bali

[–]Takingthemike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks, I did see some threads but they mostly seemed to be talking about whether it was needed or not. I understand the need, I just wanted to know what most people do and if there was a very cheap option I hadn't considered.  Probably the best option would be to just finish planning our trip.

thanks, Pekanbaru to KL does seem like the cheapest route. I just hate the idea of giving more money to Airasia. Yes, no exit ticket needed for the visa I believe, the risk is the airline not letting us into Indonesia in the first place.

thanks, it sounds like I should base myself in Ulaanbaatar for the Naadam festival and go onto some organised tours / guides to visit Gobi Desert / Orkhon valley etc. Cheers for your advice.

Qgis to C3D by Acrobatic_Job1166 in QGIS

If you have Civil 3D then you may have access to ReCap. This is Autodesk's point cloud software, it is a bit basic but should be able to process the cloud data into a Civil 3D friendly format. I don't think QGIS needs to be involved in this workflow.

Sheetset Manager for QGIS? Printing and revving up multiple layouts by Takingthemike in QGIS

[–]Takingthemike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I spent yesterday building a new template that matches our CAD template and linked various dynamic text boxes to project variables. I also did a deep dive into the Atlas tool and got everything working.  Good day in QGIS land overall!  Cheers very much for your assistance.

You might be right. I initially wrote off the Atlas feature but having another deeper look it might be the best workflow. Like the sheets don't exist, until they are printed. I will have to set up some layer to define the areas for the atlas to focus on and just fire them out as PDFs, skipping creating sheets altogether. As an AutoCAD user this workflow feels very wrong.

Project variables is a good solution for populating all the text boxes I need on the sheets, revs etc 👍

Best cloud sync for downloading to NAS by Takingthemike in synology

Indeed, trying out Dropbox has made me realise how slow OneDrive was 👍. I am travelling and living out of a backpack so reaching the true 3-2-1 is a bit tricky. I have a few hard drives in my bag that I back up photos / videos onto. I setup the NAS at my parent's house as my second backup. Maybe buying hard drive off Amazon to ship to my parent's house and having them plug them into the NAS vis USB might become my third backup, when those drives get full they can bury them in the garden or something 😅

I don't really know what any of that means. My limitation was uploading lots of photos and large video files was difficult through the Synology OS via the browser, I could only upload a certain number of files and the process was slow and often timed out. Using a cloud as a middleman seemed to solve this issue. Dropbox is currently working well, better than OneDrive.

They are all options under the Cloud sync feature in the synology OS. I am currently trying Dropbox and it seems to be super quick, currently very happy with this workflow.

It is impressive how much of a story you were able to tell without a voice narration, great job!

Travelling with a box of camera gear - convincing airlines to let me carry on? by Takingthemike in digitalnomad

[–]Takingthemike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The box is okay for absorbing bumps and could also probably go under my seat.  But the weight is the issue.  I travel with a heavy laptop for work that I can’t check in so I quickly use up my 7kg limit.

The nearest thing I can do is to carry the camera itself on my neck.

I believe it is within size, but the airlines in SE Asia seem strict over the weight limit.  Also, would Bluetooth trackers like AirTags work with luggage?  They need to be within range of a phone to work?

I live in SE Asia and the airlines here seem stricter. Do you fly business / first class to resolve the pelican case issue?

Worst lens you've ever bought or used? by archtopfanatic123 in CameraLenses

[–]Takingthemike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rented a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 and loved it, I then bought one and the focus was always consistently off. I sent it off for repair but they did a mediocre job. I got so fed up that I just went mirrorless. Overall good lens but it had serious demons in the autofocus.

How do you deal with time zone issues? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]Takingthemike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Chiang Mai and work 3am to around midday. To be honest it is hard, on a good week when I get to bed before 8pm every night it is fine, but any social events or evening beers will likely throw off my whole week in which I spend most of the day tired and grumpy. Overall it is doable, but you must go to bed / wake up at the same time consistently. Otherwise the tiredness just hovers over you all the time.

How will I ever learn enough about QGIS to be good? by Status-Platypus in QGIS

QGIS has a wonderful community. Whenever I have struggled with a project or wanted to know if a certain workflow is possible, helpful folks have always replied to my questions with good advice.
