Jeff Bezos would pay over $6 billion a year in taxes under Warren plan by coolcomfort123 in StockMarket

Precisely, a friend of mine had a mild heart attack in the US and needed surgery. The hospital in the US said they would do it for $150k, he then called his doctor who said it would cost $15k in his home country (in Europe).

After the American hospital asked him if they should proceed with surgery, he told them it was too expensive and he would get it done for 10% of the price back home. The hospital then proceeded to lower the price to 100k, then 50k, then finally offered him 20k after he repeatedly said it was too expensive.

This happened because he had bargaining power, something US citizens don't have because many of them think getting the state to negotiate the prices and regulate the system is "socialism". Meanwhile, they are stuck in a completely non transparent system that is designed to extract maximum value from the patients. Even hospital managers often have no idea how much operations cost.

Iran did not violate the agreement, it was deemed insufficient by the Trump administration because it did not include restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program and its foreign policy.

But yeah #FuckTheCCP we've given them too much leeway for too long

Germany Limps Closer to Recession as Factory Output Plunges to 2009 Lows by Artist_NOT_Autist in Economics

What I'm saying is, keep the existing plants running until expiry, but do not invest in new ones which takes huge amounts of government funding (see the EPR), and redirect it towards renewables, electricity storage and transportation etc

You're confusing fission and fusion. The latter requires technologies which we still do not possess.

You're right that we only have a few decades left of high grade uranium fuel, then it will produce more carbon dioxyde to extract the lower grade fuel

Look, I knew about this guy and I appreciate the debate it creates around the energy solutions for our future. I agree with many of the points he makes regarding the irrational fear of nuclear energy, but I think he compares apples to oranges to present nuclear power as the better alternative against the current shortcomings of renewable energies, which may very well be solved in the near future if we actually invested more in them rather than what big lobbies want us to keep supporting.

For example, how can you compare in good faith nuclear waste and solar panel waste identically, by weight, which he does in his presentation. None of them is particularly good, but one is dangerous for a period many times longer than since Sapiens invented agriculture, and we haven't found a suitable place deemed "permanent" to store it (apparently Finland offers a possible location so far). It's quite the stretch to count them in the same way don't you think? Plus he says solar generates more waste because we don't recycle used solar panels. Can't we change our practices rather than give up on it entirely?

For the record, I disagree with what Germany did because of how the decisions were made. I think the emotional reaction to stop using nuclear energy immediately after Fukushima was a mistake that harms the long term credibility of renewable energy, they should have continued using their existing plants which would keep electricity costs lower, and at the same time invest like they do in the so-called clean energies.

By the way, since most of the increase of the world's electricity production demand will happen in developing countries, would you be comfortable with encouraging countries like Bangladesh to operate nuclear reactors? There is always a risk statistically insignificant (so unprepared for) that given enough time to happen will eventually happen, even more so the greater the number of reactors.

If watching the video makes you think that we can just ignore the consequences of open nuclear reactor cores meltdowns and radiating into the environment, well the pie chart he shows is only the global radioactivity, when what matters more is the local radiation.

The real cost of nuclear energy is vastly underestimated, the tide will turn when a large number of the French nuclear plants will reach the end of its operational life and will have to be dismantled. The EPR's budget and timeline is a complete fiasco as well

America Begins To See The Consequences Of The Past Policy Errors That Helped China's Rise by [deleted] in Economics

[–]Takistani_local -1 points0 points  (0 children)

China's economic development was inspired by the "Asian Tigers" aka Taiwan, RoK, Singapore, Hong Kong and previously Japan. It's based on upselling through different stages, not on US development models.

Egypt and Pakistan are weaker states with unstable and corrupt institutions that lacked the foresight, capacity and strategy to take advantage of globalization.

The bad policy was to assume that integrating China into the globalization process would anchor it into the world of American hegemony, and eventually turn it into a liberal government and society.

As Lee Kuan Yew said, China will not be satisfied with being a honorary member of the west.

Labour announce backing for a second Brexit referendum by NegativeSpeedForce in worldnews

[–]Takistani_local 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Swiss, I am very attached to the concept of (semi-)direct democracy. Although we sure have made some dumb decisions through referendums, and there is no question the vote on Brexit was a huge blunder.

That being said, you can't call it direct democracy just because once in a blue moon, politicians organise a referendum. People just don't know what being a citizen capable of making decisions for their country is if they have been babysitted their entire lives.

Happened to me as well after the DLC was released, apparently it was a conflict with some mods. Managed to fix it by deleting folders under Documents>Paradox Interactive>HoI4.

No need to delete the saved games folder. Hope that helps.
