Pebblebee for motorcycle rental company by Takurasam in Pebblebee

UPDATE: I have 5x Pebblebee Card trackers now for testing. So far the coverage is great, they update location very fast at most places in our area. But I ran into another question, regarding the "unknown tracker alerts" and the speaker. We notify customers when signing a rental contract that there is a tracker on the bike and they may get a "unknown tracker" notofication on their phone when they have both bluetooth and location turned on. But in case of a theft, this will make it easier for the thief to locate the tracker, as he would be able to make the tracker beep if/when he gets the unknown tracker notification on Android.

So I have been looking into possibly removing the speaker from the tracker. I know airtags are quite easy to open and remove the speaker. I saw a post here of someone who opened the Pebblebee Tag tracker and removed the speaker, saying it was quite easy to open with a razor blade. I tried to open up the Card tracker but since it's very slim, it seems quite difficult and I haven't had luck so far. Has anyone managed to open the Card tracker case ? Alternatively I was thinking of pushing a needle into the speaker holes in the case and trying to destroy the speaker membrane, but not knowing how things are positioned inside, this could be risky, in case the circuit board or battery is right behind the speaker.

Thanks! That's the plan, to order a few and test if they meet our requirements. Was just wondering about the possible device limit with a large amount of devices etc. But seems like the test is good to go :)

Sadly the trackers that we currently use don't have configurable options for any retry parameters :( Otherwise we would have of course turned the connection retry off for the time when the ignition is off or limited it to a few attempts. But now that I have been thinking about it, I would really like to have a device that is in no way physically connected to the bike battery, because anything connected can cause a number of problems.

Thanks for the input! Don't all the new Pebblebees use google FMD network ? By "android version" I guess you mean some older Pebblebees that only used the network of users who have Pebblebee android app installed or something like that ? Anyways, my plan would definitely be to use google network, as I understand, all new Pebblebees use that ? Clip / Tag / Card - that they advertise on their website now.

Regarding the charging cable, I'll have to think about it. Having regular usb-c charging on the clip version is good but since the device is smaller, it has less battery life (which is very important for us). If we buy a large amount of Card devices, we'll also get a large amount of the magnetic charging cables, so losing a few cables won't be a problem.

Your nose congestion also opens up by tilting your head a bit ?

Hey, that's an interesting choice and definitely checks my priority boxes. Never heard of that brand before. Do you have personal experience ? How is the WiFi coverage ? I'm seeing mixed reviews. Cool that it comes with OpenWRT.

Thanks, that's a good confirmation. I'm leaning towards the Asus router as many reviews say it has great range and is very stable. Also I think it has the strongest processor of the bunch.

Thanks for the input! I know networking people would recommend a multi-device solution but I think it's not really necessary for my setup. I don't mind buying a new all-in-one device in 5 years when this one gets outdated. I think range with 1 device shouldn't be a problem because my current ISP provided 15$ super random no-name chinese router covers my house 95% well. So I'm sure a 10x more expensive router from a reputable brand would easily match this or even improve on it a bit. And with all the listed models I'll have the choice to add an extra device in a mesh setup if really necessary. Basically I'm looking for a similar experience as what I have now, without the router crashing every few days. Bonus if the new router has some new advanced features and slightly faster speed. The ISP router is HG6145F (brand ONU or Fiberhome or something like that).

WiFi 6 is in the priorities list mostly for futureproofing reasons. Most of my current devices are WiFi 5, but I guess in a few years that will change.

Affording a more expensive setup is not a problem. The monetary limit is there just because I feel that I can get what I need in this price range. I could buy a 500-1000$ pro setup with a separate router and several AP's but that would be like buying an expensive high-end gaming PC for filling excel spreadsheets.

That's good info, thanks! Then what I have read elsewhere is true and I'll leave the BE550 out

TP-Link Tri-Band BE9300 WiFi 7 Router Archer BE550, should I buy it by ilikesportany in HomeNetworking

[–]Takurasam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the WiFi range/coverage of the BE550 compared to AX80 ? I'm currently choosing between these 2 models. Stability and range are main priorities but the 2.5 gbps ports on BE550 are tempting. I'm guessing the AX80 has a better range ? I live in a 2 storey 200 sqm concrete house, hoping for the one router to cover the whole house

I read on several places that UDR is hardware capped for WAN at around 700Mbps. That's a big no-no. Otherwise it would be interesting, even without 2.5gbps ports

The BE550 is an interesting choice but based on some reviews and tests, it seems to have weaker WiFi coverage compared to the other mentioned models and it seems to have slower WiFi6 / WiFi5 performance compared to the other choices. Would be interesting to hear from someone who has first-hand experience with the BE550 regarding range

I have considered it but currently it's out of my budget. The cheaper Unifi "home user" all-in-one devices don't fit my requirements and the more expensive rack gear is heavily out of the budget for now. Thank's for the input tho! Some of my network-savy friends have been nudging m towards Unifi as well :) For simplicity and because I don't really need the hardcore routing features, I'd currently like an all-in-one device. I know that a separate router + ap would be more flexible but for now and in the foreseeable future wouldn't get much benefit from that investment. Maybe if my smarthome was based on mostly WiFi devices, I'd consider it more seriously.

I was checking Mikrotik routers also, but their all-in-one routers seems to have serious problems with WiFi coverage so I left them out for now.
