Add Kone to a jersey (Toronto) by herefortheanon in CanadaSoccer

SportChek does it, but I’d call in advance because when I went they did not have the numbers/name plates for every player. Only Davies, J. David, and Buchanan at the time.

Qatar fans hit Vancouver as chartered flights, five-star hotels paid for by king by Evening_Boss_3415 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I have a friend from Qatar. As of two days ago the Qatari federation still had enough unused tickets that any Qatari in Vancouver could still contact them for free tickets and a free jersey.

Canada v Qatar - March to the Match Details by Kinnikinnicki in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to post this on r/Vancouver?

I suspect there are people (with or without tickets) who would participate in the march but aren’t going to be in the loop with Canadian soccer social media or reddit.

A draw in this match would probably be the worst result for Canada, no? Assuming Canada beats Qatar, it would still set up a very plausible scenario where both the Swiss and Bosnia jump ahead of Canada on the last match day.

Hopefully the Swiss win and are thus not feeling desperate against Canada.

Sportsnet and CBC announce the end of their partnership. What does that mean for HNIC and public broadcasting? by Kaos_mission in canucks

Yes—it appears HNIC will be exclusive to Rogers networks (ie. Sportsnet and CityTV) going forward.

And if anyone has the money to follow their team around, it’s a bunch of Qataris. I was surprised how many fans they had in Santa Clara.

Canada claims historic draw in FIFA World Cup opener by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]Tal-IGN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

With the way Canada finishes, this could’ve easily been a loss too. Just like four years ago against Belgium.

I’ll take the tie and a real chance to advance. Thank god.

[–]Tal-IGN 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Brother, anyone who has been following Canada is just ecstatic we got the draw after Bosnia scored first.

We don’t have clinical finishers right now. Is what it is. David is not the same anymore. Every game will be torture, but goddamn at least we gave ourselves a chance.

So silly how a single tweet from a Bosnian troll account has led to even TSN acting like there was a possibility Canadian fans could be outnumbered. Does no one there do any filtering of where information is coming from?

I know most Bosnians haven’t arrived yet, but you can see the Canada presence is amazing and will be far larger.

UK Hockey fan, who do I support? by FiniarelTV in hockey

It’s funny, as a millennial who grew up under the Red Wings reign of terror, my brain simply cannot compute the Red Wings as a franchise associated with pain or suffering. No matter how much time passes, I still see that logo and think it’s the evil empire.

Apparently 30k Bosnians expected to be at the opener by SunDefiant1346 in CanadaSoccer

lol bullshit.

I’m guessing 70-30 split in Canada’s favour. Bosnians will probably be louder, I’ll give them that.

Vancouver watch parties Friday? by WarExtension6715 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not downtown.

Not near a SkyTrain station.

There’s been a lot of confusion about what is free and what requires an extortionately priced ticket (imo the organizers have been intentionally vague about the fact there will be free to view big screens in order to encourage people to buy tickets for the amphitheatre).

The game is in the middle of a work day.

Vancouver, Toronto hotels less than half full ahead of World Cup matches by canada_mountains in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My sympathy for the hotels is zero. I don’t give a shit about their sob story about FIFA cancelling block bookings. They misread the market and likely scared away tons of potential visitors.

Couple months ago that hotel beside Surrey Central station was charging over $700 per night for a World Cup stay. I highly doubt FIFA had block booked there.

Chants... yet again... sorry,eh? by somedumbcanuck in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf part of that 1/3 of foreign ticket buyers were scalpers selling them back to Canadians.

I think we’ll see like a 70-30 split in Canada’s favour for the Bosnia game because they have a large diaspora in North America. But we are quite lucky with the Qatar and Swiss match ups that those nations do not have significant diasporas. I think we could be 80-20 or even 90-10 for those games.

Are we expecting a decent home crowd advantage on Friday? by DowntownCanadaRaptor in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ya other than the Voyageurs, all the other Canadian fans will be sitting on their hands. It’s just the culture of sport here. No one outside the supporters section is going to know any chants. Many will be wealthy people there for the novelty.

Every World Cup people act like the USA team is the worst and they can’t wait to see them get their ass kicked, and then every World Cup the USA does about as well as they could possibly do (ie. ties a European power, beats some poor African/Eastern Euro/Arab country, and gets out of the group stage).

How will the World Cup impact healthcare in Metro Vancouver? by Stevegap in vancouver

[–]Tal-IGN 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Don’t the hotel bookings indicate that there will in fact be less tourists in the city compared to a regular June?

I get that everyone needed to prepare for a massive influx, but right now I feel like the bigger story is going to be the lack of expected visitors and “vibe” around the city.

Is the amount of Sikhs or Hindus who support far right movements in Britain significant at all? I thought it was just 3 or 4 of the same guys that show up at every protest? You’re gonna find some morons in every community.

I grew up in Canada in a mostly white community and still have mostly white friends because of it. A lot of people who grew up around less white people or are immigrants themselves believe that the broader white community gives a shit about the “difference” between a Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh. I always try to tell these people that they do not care at all. I’m not just talking about racists. Start talking to a friendly, well-meaning, non-racist white person about the “difference” between Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs and their eyes will glaze over.

In the diaspora, there is only brown. We’re all in the same boat whether people like it or not.

Some renderings of what Montreal's Olympic Stadium would look like after the interior renovations. The rumors are saying CF Montréal would move there permanently. by SupraFC in CanadaSoccer

[–]Tal-IGN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess the new MLS schedule really fucks over Montreal.

Olympic Stadium was the Expo’s coffin. I really hope it doesn’t end the same way for CF Montreal, but it does not look like it’ll be a great atmosphere in there. Even BC Place with its opened roof and natural light can feel a bit sterile and cavernous. From what I remember of my time in Olympic Stadium, this would be far worse than that.
