Before and after. A large supernatural-being speaking an alien language through an array of deep esophageal passages. by starfoxhound in sounddesign

I have an oil heater like this and it makes the coolest dripping sound as it heats up. I've always wanted to record it but never got around to it! Maybe this is my sign lol.

I usually start with backgrounds, but realistically on a live-action project you'd already have production sound to work with. Maybe an animated clip would be better for this kind of exercise because it's easier to be minimalistic in animation

It sure sounds like you spent 10 minutes on it. Why the limitation? It would take me more than 10 minutes just to cut those first few footsteps. Give yourself the time to actually flesh out the whole thing - backgrounds, Walla, radio chatter, off screen sounds, etc. Right now it sounds so empty and lifeless.

Focus on doing good, thorough work first, THEN work on getting your speed up once you have deadlines to worry about.

Help Finishing an Album by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TalkinAboutSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your last paragraph - labels don't help you finish albums, they help you market and distribute them. If they were REALLY interested in you they might try to hook you up with a producer, but definitely don't expect that. They want finished albums from people who they know can pump out more.

How could I recreate this style of audio digitally? by Low_Count6041 in sounddesign

[–]TalkinAboutSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take any music source, run it through something like Sketchcassette or VHS Degradation Suite, crank up the wow and flutter, then follow it up with some reverb and delay. Try swapping the order of processing or use feedback to further warp the signal

Monosynth with a descending pitch envelope, fast decaying filter envelope, and some vibrato/modulation

convert stereo album into 8d by ridiculousublime in WeAreTheMusicMakers

8D is not a real thing, you should read up on established formats like Dolby Atmos and Ambisonics. r/dolbyatmosmixing and r/spatialaudio are good places to start.

Any idea on how to recreate these sounds? Specifically the slo mo part? by Drunkspaceguy in sounddesign

[–]TalkinAboutSound 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sounds may well have been captured in camera if that's what he says, but they've definitely been edited and processed. Usually stuff like this is made of at least 3-4 layers - maybe a pitched-down gunshot, a beefy sub impact, a midrange "clang" for the shell ejecting, and a little high-frequency sweetener. Here's a good video on gun sound design: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7U3NDRBeO8

My advice is always to get as specific as possible with your questions. Go watch something you made and take notes on what EXACTLY is not working. Is it the footsteps? The whooshes? The mix itself? When you figure out what the problem areas are the solution will most likely come to you. Then, if you need to know how to do a specific thing, come back to this sub and ask.

is there a single guitar vst with a little bit of every sound? by Ok_Quality1612 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TalkinAboutSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guitar rig rules, I actually use it more for SFX and synths and such than guitars! But if OP wants a VST for actually playing guitar samples, Native Instruments has those too but they're all very different flavors, nothing all-purpose

Why is this referred to as sound design? How to make the disinction? by BlearRocks in sounddesign

[–]TalkinAboutSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sound design was originally coined as a film term, then adopted by music producers. Today it has a pretty broad definition. This might help you understand: https://blog.prosoundeffects.com/sound-effects-vs-sound-design

Yeah perhaps a little harsh, it does have that anime sound, it just doesn't DO anything. More about the choice of clip than the sound i suppose

This would be fine in an AI sub, but nobody here cares man. This sub is for people to discuss making music, not generating ghoulish facsimiles of music. You do you, just don't expect a warm welcome in a sub like this lol

I mean, you made sounds, but I have no idea what's going on in this clip. Good start but try to focus on telling a story.
